She Explores

I schedule a lot of interviews. I occasionally miss them, usually because of my inability to convert time differences, but sometimes because life is crazy. Occasionally podcast creators also miss our interviews. Some reschedule, some I never hear from again, and some do a bit of both by rescheduling and not answering all over again. Gale Straub was one of the creators that did not answer when I called at our scheduled interview time, but her reason was one of the coolest things I have ever heard.

She emailed to me tell me she had been backpacking all weekend, was off the grid, and had been so exhausted when she came home that she hadn’t checked her calendar, though if she had the interview would not have been there as her phone had died before she had been able to enter it. Come on, isn’t that awesome? Definitely goes a long way to explain why her show is called She Explores.

I started the podcast about two years ago to tell deeper stories about women in the outdoors. And it’s really the outdoors from the feminine perspective but also the outdoors as it overlaps with other life circumstances.

From the question of having kids to how to hike alone, She Explores covers a wide range of topics but keeps the outdoors and the female experience central. A few years ago Gale realized that there was a lack in podcasting discussing women in the outdoors and, as a woman who loves being outside, wanted to fill that gap.

I grew up in New Hampshire in a more rural area so a lot of my childhood was spent playing outside in the woods like kids do… I didn’t love hiking until I was in highschool… I think that there’s something inherent in most people to love spending time outside, and I would say that’s true for me too. But I wouldn’t say I started to experience typical outdoor activities until about four years ago when I started She Explores as a blog, my partner and I traveled the U.S. in his van for a year and I kind of got into more quote-unquote normal outdoor activities.

Of course, switching from a blog format to a podcast was a big move, and a lot of technical difficulties had to be overcome. Gale refused to quit though, and the podcast has come together and formed an incredible community for women. That community is fueled by Gale’s focus on providing a voice for the women who come on her show.

My favorite part of making the show hands down is… hearing from the person who is featured in the episode. When they say that they were surprised at how good they sounded. I feel like I tend to make episodes for – yes, I make episodes for the listeners – but I really also am making it for the one person who’s featured in that episode. Because it is really nice for women especially feel like they’re heard and feel like they are maybe more capable than they thought they were.

Gale continues to ensure that women’s experiences in the outdoors and in life as a whole are heard and shared via her show and is excited to share more and more stories. She doesn’t feel limited in that storytelling and is experimenting more and more with using sound to create a 3D experience for listeners. So, if you love exploring, nature, stories, and a good adventure, She Explores is the show for you.
