Everyone I Know

Everyone I Know is a comedy podcast hosted by brothers Chris and Andy Powers and produced by Brendan Hoyt. Each week the brothers Powers and a guest each bring a topic to discuss and debate in 3 segments. From mundane topics like “Bar soap or body wash?” to insane topics like “Who’s the most smoochable serial killer?”. We have entertainers as well as everyday people on goof it up with us in Albany, NY. Everyone YOU know should listen to Everyone I Know. EiK all day

1) In one sentence, what is your podcast about?

Everyone I Know is a comedy podcast where we argue about the mundane, discuss interesting culture, and summon demons.

2) Who should listen to your podcast?

Everyone YOU know should listen to Everyone I Know. We’re kind of a cult, but a fun one! AND we’re not one of those bad cults where they say they’re a fun cult just so you don’t call the police! We’ve been described as a podcast for fancy psychos and we find that to be a fitting title. We mix high-brow and low-brow comedy; trying to be both open, honest, and grounded while also off-the-wall, eccentric, and esoteric. We interview both active entertainers and our friends alike. We believe that everyone can be a performer if given the chance.

3) How long have you been podcasting and why did you get into podcasting?

We’ve been at this for a year and a half, but our first episode was released slightly later than that date. We had the idea for the podcast when we secretly recorded a group of our friends over the summer 2016. We’ve been podcast fans for years and I guess we just had the ambition / vanity to go ahead and try to do it ourselves. Once we connected with our producer, Brendan, we really hit our stride and by “hit our stride” I mean we became actually listenable!

4) What non-podcasting hobbies do you have?

Brendan is a bassist in a band in Albany, YOMA. He also is into tabletop games, politics, and history; with a focus on Middle Eastern history. Brendan has a room full of synthesizers and music equipment which looks like the bridge of a spaceship. Chris likes to do a little gaming, a little Redditing, has a solid knowledge of the Youtube sphere, but above all else is a film fanatic; he even has a BA in cinema and screen studies to prove it. Chris can talk for days about Queens of the Stone Age and has an unhealthy obsession with Josh Homme. Andy is a neuroscience PhD candidate, but also a secret (or maybe not so secret hippie). He goes to music festivals most summers where he expands his mind with his plastic party penguin, Pengus. Andy deeply wants to be one of 3 professions: gameshow host, lounge singer, or old-timey huckster. We all love music and cooking, but podcasting has become a passion of all three of us.

5) Tell us about your setup (recording equipment, studio, etc)! If possible, send a picture of yourself in action, using your setup. What is one show (other than your own) that you think everyone should listen to?

We record using 4 standard ball-mics, an analog mixer and compressor, and a microKorg synthesizer. The synthesizer is used generally for adding vocal effects to segment breaks and sometimes to add effects to character voices (eg: Satan / Mephistopheles in EP #46). Brendan is our producer and is the only reason we sound better than 2 tin cans and a string. We also have just troubleshot the ability to record remotely so we should be having more guests from out of town on soon!

6) Create a list, using Podchaser’s “Lists” feature, of episodes from your podcast that new listeners should try first.

7) Anything else interesting you’d like to share

We make bizarre images for when we release episodes. They usually consist of putting an image of our guest in with images that have to do with the topics from the episode. The images are intentionally campy and are made on PowerPoint.

Chris and Andy are brothers from Utica, NY. Brendan studied Middle Eastern history in college which means he knows more about Chris and Andy’s Lebanese heritage than they do. Andy has 4 cats, Brendan has 3, and Chris says he hates cats, but we all think he’s just afraid of them. We have performed 2 live shows at this point and are planning on doing another sometime soon in the city where we live: Albany, NY.

We say “Be nice to each other” at the end of every podcast. This tradition started the week after the Charlottesville riot that ended with a white supremacist murdering Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others as well as a multitude of racially motivated attacks. This event really shook us up and we felt that reminding people to try to be kind to each other even in a small way was important. It’s definitely the most sincere part of our show because the rest is mostly dick jokes.
