Rev Deschain is the producer and GM of The Critshow
, an actual play podcast where they play Powered by the Apocalypse games. Rev is a voice-over artist, co-host of the PBS show Journey Indiana. and Associate Artistic Directorate of Crossroads Repertory Theatre. Rev is a long time gamer and nerd of many fandoms (Games, movies, comics, Dark Tower, etc) – who decided he wanted to combine 2 of his favorite things (gaming/voice-over) and add to the podcast landscape with The Critshow.
1) In one sentence what is your podcast about?
The Critshow is an actual play podcast where we play Powered by the Apocalypse games: First season focuses on Monster of the Week, where the hunters try to solve mysteries and save the innocent.
2) Who should listen to your podcast?
People who like Buffy, Army of Darkness, Supernatural – that fun blend of Horror and humor. You don’t need to be a gamer to enjoy the show as a number of our listeners have never played any type of RPG before, or have just recently played for the first time based off their enjoyment of the show.
3) How long have you been podcasting and how did you get into podcasting?
Only about 4 months, but I’ve worked in voice-over for a little over 10 years – so a lot of the skills and equipment crossover.
4) What non-podcasting hobbies do you have?
I’m an avid comic collector and cosplayer. I also like to play all types of games (both Table Top and Video) and hang out with my dog Harvey.
5) Tell us about your setup (recording equipment, studio, etc)!
I had converted a walk-in closet into a sound space for my work, so for the podcast, I simply expanded it into the whole office. In a few weeks, we’ll be moving into a space more conducive to recording the podcast, streaming games, and hosting guest players all in one location.
6) What is one show (other than your own) that you think everyone should listen to?
I’m a big fan of Edumacation – especially on long drives, the topics they cover are pretty varied and fascinating. But my favorite is Hello from the Magic Tavern.
7) Anything else interesting you’d like to share?
One of the things that makes our game unique that the listeners seem to love, is that in this first season the players are actually playing themselves – and initially you might think that would be simple, but really letting go and getting into the story and caring for NPCs and owning up to your gut reactions to things is a pretty daring task when you don’t have that layer of “this over here is the character and this is over here is me”. It makes for some very powerful moments and it also helps you get to know us as people a little easier/quicker.
I’ve made a lot of things in my time working, games, movies, plays, commercials – and this is certainly one of the things that I am proudest of and am beside myself each week when I see other people loving it and sharing it. We are very fortunate to have such a supportive fan base.
