Unplaced is an audio drama that tells the story of a woman who wakes up one day to find that no one can see or hear her, and everyone she knows is slowly forgetting about her.
Serendipity City is an alt-1920s urban fantasy actual-play podcast that follows a gang of mostly-well meaning freelancers as they engage in magical and/or criminal shenanigans.
Unplaced: People who want to listen to a story that’s a mix of introspection and urban fantasy, with a dash of supernatural horror.
Serendipity City: People who are into tabletop RPGs, audio drama, dieselpunk, the roaring 20s, urban fantasy, lots of anachronisms, or any combination of the above.
I wrote Unplaced in February and March of 2017 and we launched it in October of 2017, and Serendipity City started recording in October of 2017 and we launched in January 2018. I’ve always been interested in creative writing (and have written prose before) but I only started listening to audio drama in 2015-2016. Once I got into it, I was really enchanted by the medium and by the stories that can (and are) being told in it, and wanted to give it a try for myself. I don’t have any plans to stop writing for other mediums (some of my current projects include a novel series, a tabletop RPG game, and a mobile game), but writing and creating for audio is a lot of fun and I’m glad I started.
There’s writing, but that’s kind of a cop-out since that’s also a lot of what goes into my podcasting process. Aside from writing on various creative projects and my podcasts, my two biggest hobbies are probably bouldering and martial arts. I’ve been climbing regularly for about a year now and I’ve been training martial arts (first Brazilian jiu-jitsu, mostly Krav for the last year, although I’d like to get back into BJJ) for about three and a half years now.
When I’m recording intros/outros or solo lines, I have a Blue Yeti with a pop filter and…that’s about it. For our group recordings for Serendipity City, we have individual mics & pop filters for everyone run through a ProFX12 mixer. We record in my living room & my apartment is a pretty open floor plan so there’s not a ton of soundproofing I can do in here, but, knock on wood, I’ll be moving relatively soon to a place where I’ll be able to have a dedicated office/recording space.
I just started listening to Ghostpuncher Corps after having it in my queue for forever, and it’s so good! Definitely a must-listen-to for people who enjoy actual play podcasts and want something outside of the standard medieval high-fantasy genre (especially people looking for good LGBTQ+ rep!).
Unplaced won’t make any sense if you don’t start with episode one – there’s a couple of potential jumping on points for Serendipity City (we’ve got a new listener guide here), but once you start in one spot you should listen to all the episodes of that arc to make sense of things.
