Caillan Davenport is an Australian historian of ancient Rome and a professor of Roman history. His research focuses on the political culture of the Roman Empire, imperial power, and the role of communication in shaping authority. He is the author of *Behind Caesar's Back: Rumor, Gossip, and the Making of the Roman Emperors*, published by Yale University Press in 2026, which examines how informal networks, scandal, and public talk influenced reputations and succession in imperial Rome. Davenport has also written on Roman emperors, political propaganda, and the dynamics of rule in the early empire.
