Dr. Kareem Rabie is a Palestinian American anthropologist on faculty at The University of Illinois, Chicago. His work focuses on privatization, urban development, and the state-building project in the West Bank. Rabie’s 2021 ethnography, “Palestine is Throwing a Party and the Whole World is Invited: Capital and State Building in the West Bank,” argues examines efforts to create a “new” Palestinian middle class, characterized not by its income bracket but by its household organization: a home-owning nuclear family on the Western model.
