Loch Kelly is an author, meditation teacher, psychotherapist, and the founder of The Open-Hearted Awareness Institute. Loch works to help people access awakening as the next natural stage of human development. by offering in-person retreats, workshops, and online video and audio courses. He has served on the New York Insight Teachers Council and has collaborated with neuroscientists at Yale, U Penn and NYU in the study of how awareness training can enhance compassion and well being. Loch also studied extensively with Mingyur Rinpoche and was invited to teach direct realization by Adyashanti. As a licensed psychotherapist, Loch has been teaching seminars, supervising clinicians and practicing awareness psychotherapy in New York City for 30 years. Loch Kelly, M.Div., LCSW, is an educator, contemplative psychotherapist, and recognized leader in the field of consciousness and awakening. He is a graduate of Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary, where he received a fellowship to study Insight Meditation, Advaita, and Tibetan Buddhism. He trained with Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche in Nepal, served on the Teacher’s Council at New York Insight, and is affiliated with Adyashanti. The founder of the non-profit Open-Hearted Awareness Institute, Loch has worked in community mental health, established homeless shelters, and counseled family members after 9/11. He collaborates with neuroscientists to study how awareness training enhances compassion and wellbeing. He is the author of Shift into Freedom, the subject of our previous interview with him, and his latest The Way of Effortless Mindfulness. He teaches direct methods of effortless mindfulness, informed by psychology and social justice. We spoke about his work in general and the methods he highlights in his new book.
