Welcome to the No Filter summer series, where we look back at some of our most popular interviews over the 3 years. First up? The man known for his conversations, Richard Fidler...
Richard Fidler doesn’t like to be interviewed. But he does like interviewing other people. He records up to 300 Conversations a year as the host of Conversations on ABC radio. But he very rarely gets interviewed himself.
So when Mia asked him onto my podcast a few years ago, he was a little hesitant. But, ever the professional - he let her pick his brains about what goes into making the perfect interview. His time in the Doug Anthony Allstars, life as a parent and his best advice...
Here’s the interview king, Richard Fidler…

There are plenty of Australians who are calling for a clean out of the entire ABC board, seeking answers to many questions around the sacking of the managing director, as well as lingering issues about how politics and the broadcaster interact. But the show, as they say does go on. One of the best loved ABC broadcaster Richard Fidler joins PM, whose program Conversations exemplifies the role of the ABC.
American writer and author Ta-Nehisi Coates is best known for the New York Times bestseller Between the World and Me which created a unique blend of reportage, historical analysis and personal narrative. As national correspondent for The Atlantic he has established himself as a major force in American intellectual life, and is one of the most influential essayist on race, culture and politics writing today. He also writes on the Marvel Comics Black Panther series, and scored a credit on the blockbuster movie. At ANTIDOTE with the ABC’s Richard Fidler, Ta-Nehisi Coates talked about his violent childhood in Baltimore, how becoming a father changed him, and how his work now might change how we all think about race. Richard Fidler is an Australian author and radio broadcaster that has championed the art of the long form interview since 2006. His nationally broadcast radio show "Conversations" that he hosts along side Sarah Kanowski, delves deep into the guests lives and makes a fascinating hour of radio. Richard sat down with Jesse Begley to discuss his new book Saga land, which he co-wrote with author Kári Gíslason. They also discussed Richard's 2016 book Ghost Empire, life before radio and much more.
