Roxanne Shante is a pioneering American rapper and one of the first prominent female MCs in hip-hop. She gained widespread recognition in the mid-1980s as a teenager with the release of "Roxanne's Revenge," a response to UTFO's hit "Roxanne, Roxanne," which sparked one of hip-hop's earliest and most famous feuds, the "Roxanne Wars." As a member of the Juice Crew, she became an influential figure in the New York hip-hop scene. Shante paved the way for future generations of female rappers. In 2017, her life and career were chronicled in the biopic Roxanne Roxanne.
