L.A., Houston mayors on housing and homelessness
Matt and Liam were travelling and sick the past two weeks, so no conventional episode of Gimme Shelter this fortnight. Instead we present a collection of interviews with big city mayors on housing and homelessness. First, a live panel featuring Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, and Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg (1:55). CALmatters reporter Laurel Rosenhall moderated the panel earlier this month as part of the California Dream Project, a collaboration between CALmatters and major public radio stations across the state. Then Liam interviews former Houston Mayor Annise Parker on her efforts to reduce homelessness in a city without zoning laws (43:33). Liam conducted this interview in October. Building Humane Cities
Cities are symbols of hope and opportunity. But today, overcrowding and gentrification are hurting their most vulnerable residents. This hour, TED speakers explore how we can build more humane cities. Guests include architects Liz Ogbu and Vishaan Chakrabarti, writer OluTimehin Adegbeye, former Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry, and journalist Drew Philp.
Making a house a home #3 - Housing First
In the third episode of 'Making a house a home' we turn our spotlight to Housing First. Why is this probably the best way to fight  homelessness? What does the case of Finland show to the rest of EU  Member States? What is the aim of the Housing First Europe Hub? Samara  Jones from FEANTSA, Programme Coordinator of the Housing First Europe  Hub provides us with an insider’s view on this innovative approach. In the second part of our show we welcome  Björn Mallants, the General Director of VVH, the Association of Flemish  Social Housing Companies, a member of Housing Europe to talk about their  experience on the ground with the Housing First scheme. How is it  working in Flanders? Where do they draw their inspiration from?
