About This List

If you're looking for a place to start in podcasts with a huge backlog, here is my list of favorite episodes that you can listen to in any order. Mainly True Crime and History.
  1. Our ancient ancestors spoke of a legendary place -- where the young and young at heart could test their skills against a magical, electronic device, using strategy, and their reflexes at 25¢ a pop. These wondrous havens were called "Video Arcades" and these hulking machines were called "Video Games." Believe it or not kids, it was the only place you could play a decent-looking, somewhat sophisticated video game, housed in a heavy, laminated wooden cabinet, because at the time the only thing you could play on your "push-button" phone was the tune, "Mary Had a Little Lamb." There is another legend however, that at least in one or more of these Video Arcades in Portland, Oregon in 1981 A.D., there lurked a mysterious Arcade Game called "Polybius" and it had a much more nefarious purpose than to provide amusement and rook a kid out of a short stack of quarters -- it may have been there to try its hand at brainwashing you, and then report its findings to a sinister government agency. There were reports of players who suffered terrible side effects from the visual phantasmagoria of the gameplay, like severe headaches, nausea, memory loss, nightmares, an aversion to playing any video games afterwards and in some extreme cases, suicide. But were these reports true? Did this diabolical game ever exist? Was the legend of Polybius just an "Urban Legend?" One thing we do know is true, prior to the legend of Polybius, a secret government agency really did try to zap unsuspecting people's brains and take notes. Tonight's Quote: “The obvious objective of video games is to entertain people by surprising them with new experiences.” Miyamoto Shigeru, the "Father of Modern Video Games" and Co-creator of The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Super Mario Brothers and many more. 2. In the summer of 1977 on the very first night at Camp Scott, the tents shook against a raging thunderstorm as a dark and sinister presence stalked the woods. By morning 3 young girls would be dead; molested and murdered in the middle of the night. 40 years later this brutal crime still remains unsolved - what really happened to the murdered Oklahoma Girl Scouts?  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
  3. Imagine a criminal conspiracy and cover-up so so massive in scale, involving the highest levels of government and industry, that it threatens the very fabric of the American system. Now imagine that the crimes of this criminal syndicate are so horrible, so horrendous, that the mere mention of them would be frowned upon in polite society, and the very idea of such a conspiracy being possible would be laughable and downright absurd. Yet, in September of 1982, the unexplained disappearance of a 12-year-old boy named Johnny Gosch, set a series of events into motion that would have earth-shattering ramifications to this day. In this episode of Sword and Scale, we'll delve into Part 1 of a series titled The Massive Cover-Up one of the strangest and most outrageous criminal conspiracy theories ever told, including audio from many of those who witnessed the story unfolding firsthand. We're also delve into all the bizarre side-stories that spin off like fractals into their own mysterious endings. The show concludes with a viral video that made headlines last week. In keeping with the theme, it is that of a sexual abuse victim named Jamie that decided that if the law wasn't going to help her, perhaps YouTube and the outrage of millions could. You won't want to miss this clip.
  4. On April 28th, 1996, Martin John Bryant became known as the worst single mass-murderer in Australian History. 21 years later, the Port Arthur Massacre still stands as the 3rd deadliest shooting by a lone gunman in the world. Known as a loner with the IQ of an 11-year-old, a series of events in Martin Bryant’s life would go on to trigger a rampage that would change hundreds of people’s lives that day, as well as the lives of everyday Australians who looked on in horror. 5. It's one of the biggest American disasters you may never have heard of. On April 23, 1940, over 200 people died when the Rhythm Club caught fire in Natchez, Mississippi. But one of the most lethal fires America's ever seen has slipped through the cracks of history. (TW: This episode also features discussion of the tragic Pulse shooting in Orlando this past weekend.)
  6. Texas A&M's annual bonfire was meant to symbolize their burning desire to beat the hell out of the University of Texas at Austin's football team. But in 1999, Bonfire never burned. Instead it collapsed underneath the feet of several dozen students working to build the stack at the time, putting all of their lives at risk.
  7. On August 8th, 2013, twenty-six year old Brandon Lawson got into an argument with his longtime girlfriend, Ladessa Lofton. Frustrated and wanting some time to cool off, he placed a call to his father over three hours away in Crowley, Texas and asked to spend the night. His father tried to talk him out of it, but at 11:54pm, Brandon began his drive. Forty miles later, he ran out of gas and called his brother Kyle for help. What transpired in the next thirty minutes is unknown, but when his brother arrived, Brandon was nowhere to be found. After searching for hours, there were no traces of Brandon. The family would later learn that shortly after calling his brother, Brandon made a call to 911. In the call, Brandon is clearly frantic and talking fast. The interpretation of what he said would become hotly debated amongst the family, police and online investigators. The Coke County Sheriff’s Department was hesitant to treat it as a missing person’s case, and instead approached it from the perspective that Brandon has chosen to run off to avoid a warrant that had been issued for his arrest some eight years earlier. While the family searched exhaustively, believing that Brandon would never abandon his four children, authorities wouldn’t begin their first search until a week later. A controversy of police disinterest or of a possible cover up begins developing. What happened to Brandon Lawson? Did he choose to flee from his warrant? Did he get lost alongside desolate Highway 277 and never find his way back? Did demons from his past come back to haunt him or did Brandon stumble upon something in the early morning hours for which he was murdered? Join host Steven Pacheco as he examines one of the most highly requested cases and looks into the details of this strange mystery, the Disappearance of Brandon Lawson. 8. Nineteen year old Brandon Swanson had just completed his first year of college. Planning to spend his evening celebrating with friends, Brandon drove from his home in Marshall, MN to two separate gatherings. After leaving the second, near midnight, Brandon made the choice to take back roads rather than the faster and easier route of Highway 68.While driving on gravel back roads, Brandon got his car stuck in a ditch. Calling his parents for help, Brandon gave them directions to come and pick him up but when they arrived, neither Brandon nor his car were anywhere to be found. It wouldn't be until later that Brandon's parents would learn their son was actually twenty-five miles away from where he had thought.During a 47 minute phone call with his father, Brandon explained that he saw lights and was going to walk toward them. At some point, during the call, Brandon screamed out an expletive and the phone went dead. Neither Brandon, his phone or any shred of evidence has ever been found to explain what may have happened. What happened to Brandon Swanson? Did the young man die of exposure due to the cold Minnesota night? Did he fall into the Yellow Medicine River, unable to escape its surging waters? Or, did Brandon come upon someone who had malicious intentions? Join host Steven Pacheco as he examines this haunting and disturbing story.***This week's episode is brought to you by Care/of Vitamins. 9. The details of this case are extremely difficult to hear. Extreme child abuse and child murder are involved. This episode won't be for everybody. There is far more courtroom audio then narration. It is a one-off for this episode. It is not something that will be a regular feature in the future. The courtroom confession is detailed and horrific. Listener discretion is advised. For all credits and sources please visit casefilepodcast.com/case-20-stoni-blair-and-stephen-berry
  10. Jaryd Atadero. Allyn Atadero shares the painful story of how his 3 year-old son Jaryd went missing in the Colorado mountains. He had gone with his sister and a group of adults to visit a nearby fish hatchery. Without notifying Allyn, the group would later decide to drive to a trail to hike on that was 16 miles away. While on the trail, the adults would lose sight of Jaryd. The search for the boy encountered many obstacles and it would be almost four years before some evidence finally came to light. Many questions remain unanswered in this case. Allyn learned a lot from this experience and has used this knowledge to educate others on trail safety and to assist other parents who face similar challenges. He and his twin brother, Arlyn, wrote a book about Jaryd's story titled, 'Missing: When the Son Sets'. For more information about Jaryd's case, please purchase the book & visit the facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Missing-When-the-Son-Sets-1379628532365438/
  11. Episode 23: This week we tackle the tough subject of the Sandy Hook massacre. There are many who believe this was nothing more than an orchestrated hoax. Today we discuss the inconsistencies in the story. We’ll examine many of so-called smoking guns talked about on the internet today. Was it just a drill? Where’s all the blood? What’s the deal with the Facebook remembrance pages that were seemingly created days to weeks before the actual tragedy? Was this just the next in a long line of government orchestrated False Flag events? Eric and Everett discuss this and more on this episode of Surreal Talk. 12. Diane Schuler ////// 69TrueCrimeGarage.comThe Taconic Parkway Crash of 2009 was one of the areas most tragic stories. The fatal three car crash resulted in the deaths of eight people. It was quickly determined that Diane Schuler 36 years of age was responsible for the crash and the homicides of the other 7 innocent victims. An autopsy determined her blood alcohol level to be .19%, that's more than two times the legal limit for the state of New York. Her husband and sister in-law have publicly stated that Diane was not a drinker and this was not a homicide but in fact an accident. Her erratic driving was the result of either a stroke or a health issue. Tonight we examine the Schuler families' statements and take a look at the facts. Why was a seemingly good mother driving under the influence with 5 young children in her vehicle?Don't drink and drive and please stop texting and driving!Beer of the Week - Global Warmer by six point brewery - Brooklyn NYGarage Grade - 4 out of 5 bottle capsCheck out a special offer for our listeners at Stamps.com but make sure you click on the microphone and enter code GARAGECheers, Nic and the Captain
  13. First came the seizures and sleep paralysis. Then came the hallucinations and violent behaviour. Anneliese Michel made endless visits to doctor’s and specialists only to be either referred to another doctor or placed on medication that wasn’t helping her. Her condition became so bad that at times she started to growl and speak in a horrific deep voice… For all credits and sources please visit casefilepodcast.com/case-11-anneliese-michel
  14. A comfortable suburban existence begins to fracture with a single sound. You may have heard it sometime yourself, but those who have surely possess no need for stories like these to haunt them.
