McKee (the man who defeated him months earlier) at Bellator 277 to once again gain his spot as the leader of the 145-pound pack.While most expected a trilogy fight against “Mercenary” to be next on the docket, it was not to be. Instead, Adam Borics gets the nod and now has the chance to earn gold in MMA for the first under the Bellator banner.Borics has been on an absolute tear, winning four straight including a dominant win over Mads Burnell, which helped catapult him into the championship fight.Overall, Borics is 9-1 with the promotion with the lone loss of his career coming against Darrion Caldwell. Other than that hiccup, Borics has been spectacular.Borics has proven to have a well-rounded arsenal, winning seven by decision, four by knockout, and six by way of submission. And Pitbull is the same way, he can take the fight anywhere, can knock you out, twist you like a pretzel or grind your out for 15 or 25 minutes to get the win.Borics has big wins over Aaron Pico and Pat Curran, but Pitbull is an entirely different animal, and now that he has the belt back over his shoulder he will fight like hell to not lose it again.If this fight stays on the feet, I give the power advantage to Pitbull, but Borics is well-versed in the striking department and has great technique. But if he gets into an all-out slugfest, it won’t work well for him. If it goes to the ground, Pitbull has a slight advantage there.All that said, while Borics is great in every area Pitbull is just a bit better, and while he won’t get a finish he will do enough to earn a clear-cut unanimous decision here. Total (+118): McKee is making his lightweight debut against Spike Carlyle, who has brought the same wild style he employed in the UFC to the Bellator cage.That's the exact kind of style someone as smart and technical as McKee feasts on and it's hard to see McKee losing outside of just getting caught by a perfect shot. Mamedov rebounded from a surprising split decision loss to Benson Henderson with a sub-two minute victory.In Nick Browne, he faces a talented opponent, but one who hasn't faced, let alone beaten, anyone of Mamedov's level. Murtazaliev is a risky pick who did lose his most recent fight, a fight in which he was a heavy favorite.Still, in Khadzhimurat Bestaev, Murtazaliev has an opponent he should be able to handle to get back on the winning track.McKee didn’t get either of the two fights he was hoping for, a trilogy fight against Patricio Pitbull, or a title fight against Patricky Pitbull at Lightweight.What he did get is his first fight at 155 pounds which could earn him a title shot if he wins. Granted, this will be his first fight in the division and he hasn’t done much work in this particular weight class to get the nod, but given his resume and his rivalry with the Pitbull brothers, he has a good case.But first, he has to get an impressive win over a grizzled veteran who isn’t ready to be anyone’s stepping stone. Carlyle is currently on a five-fight win streak but only one of those has come under the Bellator banner. He does have UFC experience, though he only went 1-2 in his three outings inside the Octagon.Unfortunately for “The Alpha Ginger” he will be facing one of the best fighters in the promotion that is coming off his first-ever loss and hungry for redemption.McKee is one of the most talented individuals in all of MMA and he does just about everything right. Carlyle will have to be on his “A” game to get the job done, but even then McKee will simply be better.He’s quicker, and his technique is tighter in every aspect of the fight game, and out to prove he deserves a crack at the 155-pound belt.Bellator MMA presents one of its best cards of the year on Saturday night. The promotion takes over Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California for a loaded Bellator 286 card with a featherweight title clash between champion Patricio "Pitbull" Freire and Adam Borics headlining the event.Pitbull (33-5) kicks off his third reign as Bellator featherweight champion. Having avenged his shocking loss to AJ McKee in a competitive rematch, Pitbull has a tough title defense ahead of him in one of the promotion's deepest divisions.Pitbull is a deeply versatile fighter with a near equal split of knockout, submission and decision victories in a career spanning dozens of fights. The champ has no shortage of motivation and has expressed a desire to clean out the featherweight division before dropping to bantamweight in search of a third divisional title."He's a talented guy. He is the guy in this division with the most victories," Pitbull said at media day. "Maybe it's going to look like a kickboxing match. I'm going to try to take him down if I have the opportunity. If I don't have that, I'm going to strike with him. Nobody can escape from me from there."The most important thing for me is to get the victory Saturday night and keep the belt with the Pitbull brothers. Lightweight and featherweight."If there was a poster boy for “How To Improve After Every Fight,” Pico would be the man for the job. Just when you think he can’t get any better, he does.And he’s done that time after time, fight after fight. His wrestling is already top notch and he can take pretty much anyone at 145 pounds whenever he wants.But his striking attack has improved leaps and bounds in every fight. The thing that makes Pico so fun to watch is that he is so crisp and so tight with his technique.He sort of reminds me of a prime Cain Velaquez in that there is no wasted movement and everything is done with a purpose. Currently on a six-fight win streak, Pico is ranked No. 3 at 145 pounds and a win here could seal the deal for a shot at the title to face the winner of Pitbull vs Borics.Ranked No. 7 at the moment, Kennedy is out to stop Pico’s momentum by adding to his own. Kennedy was last seen defeating Emmanuel Sanchez in a dominant effort at Bellator 272 and is 2-1 so far with the Viacom-owned MMA promotion.Kennedy has UFC experience on his resume, going 3-1 before unexpectedly parting ways with the promotion following his loss to current 145-pound champion, Alexander Volkanovski.That said, while Kennedy brings a lot of experience to the table, there is simply no accounting for Pico’s wrestling unless you can match it...and very few can.Pico can (and will) soften Kennedy up on the feet and have his way with him when they clinch. Expect another dominant win for Pico on his way to earning a shot at the title.It's the kind of card that should have MMA fans excited and also garner the interest of sports betters everywhere. With that in mind, let's take a look at our choices for the best bets on the Bellator 286 card.Patricio Pitbull (-150) vs. Adam Borics: To be honest, this line does not make sense. Borics is a fine fighter but his resume, even at 18-1, does not come close to Pitbull.In his most recent fight, Borics earned a title shot by going five rounds with Mads Burnell in a very hard battle. While the scorecards were wide, Borics ate some very clean shots from Burnell. Burnell has a single knockout in his career, so going toe-to-toe didn't pose much risk to Borics.Pitbull is a very, very different story. Pitbull is a truly balanced fighter, with 11 wins by knockout, 12 by submission and 10 by decision. Borics doesn't really have the power to trouble Pitbull -- who has one TKO loss on his record, which was the result of an injury -- and grappling likely isn't the path to victory for Borics, either.Borics has tremendous cardio and maybe he can put on such a pace that it leaves Pitbull gassed in the championship rounds, but applying such a pace requires engaging directly over and over and every moment of engagement is a moment Borics is in danger.Go with the guy who has proven himself against the best on the Bellator roster at a delicious-looking price.Borics (18-1) has quietly developed into one of Bellator's most promising contenders. Decision wins over Mads Burnell and Jeremy Kennedy confirm that he can go the distance and a flying knee TKO of Aaron Pico suggests the native of Hungary has a knack for flare.There is reasonable faith in Borics heading into a fight against the far more decorated Pitbull. The close betting lines validate Borics' self-belief that he is the future of the division."My side is different because I'm still 29 and I just get better every day. He's 35, but he's changed a lot. In the beginning of his career, he was more wild, more active. But right now, he fights smarter," Borics said at media day.Max Rohskopf (-120) vs. Mike Hamel: Rohskopf got a bad shake in the UFC, making his Octagon debut on less than one week's notice and retiring in his corner after the second round.While UFC president Dana White defended Rohskopf after the fight, the promotion then cut him from the roster. He's a guy who made his way through high school and college as a wrestler, and no one becomes a highly-touted wrestler at a major university if they don't have toughness.After taking time off, Rohskopf won a pair of fights for Cage Warriors and now is making his Bellator debut. Hamel has a 9-5 record but one loss came via disqualification and he lost decisions to Usman Nurmagomedov and Adam Borics, with the Borics loss a split decision.Hamel isn't an easy out, but he is the kind of opponent Rohskopf beats if he is on his game mentally and physically.After getting bounced from the World Bantamweight Grand Prix, Barzola and Archuleta will now face off against each other in what should be an intriguing and competitive battle.Archuleta was knocked out by Raufeon Stots in the opening round in an interim title fight, giving him his second straight loss, with the other coming against division king, Sergio Pettis.Barzola, meanwhile, was choked out by Magomed Magomedv, dashing his dreams of a million-dollar payday and a world title fight. While he won’t get any of those prizes with a win over Archuleta, it will still be a nice notch on his belt if he can get the win.In order to accomplish that feat, he will have to make it an up-close and personal dog fight, meaning he will have to smother Archuleta with relentless pressure to avoid letting him pop off his offense.An 11-fight UFC veteran, Barzola knows just how to do that and is capable of hanging with the best in the 145- and 135-pound divisions. But, Archuleta is no slouch.He has been battle-tested during his time with Bellator, taking on the best such as the aforementioned Patricio Pitbull and Sergio Pettis. For “The Spaniard,” however, that big staple win over a huge name has eluded him during his time with the promotion, though he was able to claim the vacant 135-pound title by taking out Patchy Mix.But when he faces Pitbull, Pettis, and most recently, Stots, in the big fights, he came up just short. This is a tough one to call because both men are so talented well-rounded and are absolute dogs when the action gets started. It’s a tossup for me, but I see Archuleta doing just enough to convince the judges.Meanwhile, the co-main event sees McKee make his lightweight debut against chaotic UFC alum Spike Carlyle. This is a new beginning for McKee, who has regularly expressed a desire to move up to 155 pounds due to the difficult featherweight cut. Lightweight appears to be McKee's home for the foreseeable future with the exception of a potential trilogy fight against Pitbull.Carlyle, also a former featherweight, bounced back well from his UFC release and pieced together five straight finishes. He recently choked out both Dan Moret and Koji Takeda in Bellator and RIZIN, respectively."I appreciate him stepping up to the plate. You know the Pitbulls clearly don't want this smoke. I think they're terrified of the last name McKee, as they should be," McKee told CBS Sports."He's just a go-getter. He's going to come forward and throw. At the same time, I know he has a slow start... I'm looking forward to getting in there, getting back to my old self and making some statements."I'm still the champ. It is what it is. The arena is there for me. I think after the co-main, everyone is going to leave. They'll be fighting for themselves. It's cool though there are no hard feelings.It is what it is. Achuleta, the former titleholder at 135 pounds, has dropped two straight since capturing the gold.He's coming off a nasty TKO loss to Raufeon Stots in April. Barzola, meanwhile, is coming off a loss of his own against Magomed Magomedov by submission. The loss snapped a three-fight unbeaten streak.Patricio Pitbull vs. Adam Borics: Pitbull is still very much the man at featherweight. Avenging his loss to McKee -- someone pegged as MMA's next bright star -- was a reminder that Pitbull is going nowhere. He can win a fight by any method and shown a resiliency to bounce back from adversity.There are very few fighters in the sport who can repeatedly reinvent themselves at a high level. It is the champ's ability to dictate the terms of the fight that should buoy him to the finish line.Working on the inside, against the fence and on the ground are his keys to victory. Borics would do well to stay on the outside and maximize his five-inch height and reach advantages.It is concerning that Borics' striking background has not translated to finishes at the higher levels of Bellator's featherweight division. Borics' performances in fights against Burnell and Kennedy -- decisive but at times too competitive -- are convincing enough to envision a chess match against Pitbull, but not enough to score the victory. Scorecards should favor the champ to retain his title. The former champ is facing an athlete that’s been bouncing organizations, rebuilding a career after being cut from the UFC. None of these fighters have been top tier, and McKee is a huge jump in competition.The money line returns $23 per $100 wagered on its own, but should be a lucrative addition to the right parlay. Runners up include Khalid Murtazaliev -350 and Gibson Clark -550.This man’s only loss was a short notice fight for the UFC. As a grappler, he’s evolved since his last loss two years ago, incorporating more standing and ground striking in his last two wins at Cage Warriors.Max, a D1 wrestler, is ready to demonstrate a mix of only and new skills against an opponent particularly susceptible to ground attacks.Pitbull tends to struggle with lanky fighters, like Benson Henderson. Borics is that same kind of long athlete, and should get the better of Freire. Bet the Borics Money line, or Borics by points at +285.He’s won his last four by decision, as is becoming a man who knows how to fight the distance. Fans of Freire should opt for the Over 4.5 Rounds bet at -120. The formerly undefeated champ moves up to lightweight to face a CW and RIZIN fighter in Carlyle. Spike was 1-2 in the UFC before being released in his last set of losses.He’s a fantastic fighter with finishing ability in all areas. Still, he’ll come up short against the crafty McKee.The McKee style is difficult to train for, and Carlyle hasn’t faced anyone near this caliber since his Bill Algeo loss. Bet McKee by decision, or the Over 1 ½ Rounds prop. Spike has never been finished, and I don’t think McKee will be taking any big risks.Pico looks to continue his six fight winning streak, all via finishes, against Jeremy Kennedy. Kennedy is a high quality fighter, going 3-1 in his UFC run and 2-2-1 in the PFL. He’s got a 40% finishing ratio in his 20 fight career, and his losses include Volkanovski and Borics.Whatever it is, A.J. McKee’s lightweight debut, on the heels of his only professional MMA loss, comes Saturday night in his hometown of Long Beach. For his father and lifelong coach, it is everything.“He’s living my dreams. He’s doing what I would have dreamed to do. But there’s nothing greater, if I’m not doing it, than watching my son, who was born in Long Beach. Memorial Hospital,”Antonio McKee said. “You know, he’s slaved his time on that turf. And now he’s coming back and he’s coming back to be supported by his city. Big shout out to Bellator for making that happen.”McKee (18-1) believed that night in San Jose and to this day maintains he should still be undefeated. The fight stats show he landed 40 more total strikes and scored four takedowns to none for Pitbull.Within two weeks after the fight, McKee says he went into a funk enveloped in a haze of marijuana smoke.“Waking up smoking, smoking before going to bed, before training, after training, all day, on the way to training at night. OK, yeah, you don’t have a fight coming up.But it’s like, ‘Bro, why are you smoking so much? You got a vape pen here. I mean, you got your little weed cartridge.’ It’s like, ‘Just leave it all alone,’” McKee said.“So I was able to really just look myself in the mirror and be like, ‘Yo, are you going to let this continue to affect you? Or are you going to bring it back?’ You know?“And that was a big part. It was hard at first, because I realized I had a problem. And then it was like, ‘All right, well, do I really, really have a problem? Or am I just using this problem to cope with what I’m facing at the moment?’”While McKee wallowed, his father took a surprisingly different approach. In fact, Antonio McKee admits he was happy with the outcome.Not only was a major life lesson imparted to his son, but the end result could be the biggest payoff.“Everyone was like, ‘Your son just lost.’ No, he didn’t. He won the fight. He lost the decision. But what he won, he won in life, because he got a chance to see the difference between when he applies himself and when he doesn’t,” Antonio McKee said. “Yeah, everybody that saw the fight said he won. That’s great. Pitbull’s face showed he won.“But what they didn’t see is we won in life because he made a life change after that. He stopped smoking. Now you guys woke up the monster. I’m excited as hell.”What’s more, his 5-foot-10 son has moved up a weight class, leaving behind the grueling weight cuts. Once getting as high as 185 pounds, knowing he would need to shed 40 pounds, A.J. McKee says he has been no higher than 170 pounds ahead of successfully making weight Friday morning.
