Humanity has a collective problem: we don't know what to do with our feelings of guilt. We are full of shame, but we blame-shift. How do we change? In today's passage, Jesus is bound and brought before Pilate, the violent Roman governor. As the story unfolds, we get the sense that everyone is guilty and blame-shifting... everyone except One. Jesus is the only one in the story who is completely innocent, and yet he is the only one who is not trying to defend himself. Matthew is showing us a life-changing reality: the answer for our collective guilt and shame is somehow wrapped up in the Innocent Man, Jesus Christ.
