The Canadian legal cannabis industry's rules and regulations are in place to keep us safe; however, the average cannabis consumer is not aware of the rules and regulations. Are you educated as a cannabis patient or consumer about your rights and the laws when purchasing your cannabis medicine? This episode reviews how and why cannabis became federally legal across Canada and is helpful information to add to your toolkit of cannabis knowledge.

Timestamp Highlights:

[2:33] Why now? Why all of a sudden are we legally able to access cannabis without reprimand? What happened over the past 20 years to make us change the way we look at the cannabis plant?

[3:30] Past cannabis advocacy groups lobbied for patients to be able to access cannabis as medicine - learn about the path that legal cannabis has taken in Canada and where we are at today. MMAR -> MMPR -> ACMPR -> Bill C-45, The Cannabis Act

[8:22] The Cannabis Act aims to accomplish 3 goals:

  • keep cannabis out of the hands of youth
  • keep profits out of the pockets of criminals
  • protect public health and safety by allowing adults access to legal cannabis

[12:25] Breaking down the different markets that exist. Where people get their cannabis these days. How to get started shopping for cannabis (online, medical dispensaries, retail shops, etc.)

[19:30] The benefits of obtaining your prescription and purchasing medical cannabis from your licenced producer (taxes, compassionate pricing, sales, etc).

[24:40] Legal products are lab tested, but we need more transparency to the results and to the companies who grow, process, and supply our cannabis plants.

[28:38] How hemp regulations differ. What’s the difference between “hemp” and “cannabis” when it comes to medicinal cannabis?

[30:54] Possession limits - how much cannabis can you possess in public. What is the difference for medical consumers who have a medical document? Provincial/Territorial regulations may differ as to who can grow cannabis, the age at which adults can access recreationally, the rules around processing our own cannabis.

[35:52] How to figure out YOUR personal possession limit.

[39:00] The barriers to access for medicinal growers.

Stacy and Steph share their story of accessing medical cannabis as breast cancer patients. As co-founders of EduCanNation, a Canadian nonprofit organization that provides evidence-based cannabis education and supports certified cannabis educators, Steph and Stacy share the knowledge they have learned as certified cannabis educators to help advocate for the patient and the plant.  Their stories of staying positive and hopeful despite the hardship of a breast cancer diagnosis, helps to remind us that we are always stronger than we think we are.

The information contained in this podcast is for educational purposes only, it is not medical advice. We are certified cannabis educators, we are not medical doctors. Steph and I recommend that you speak directly to a medical cannabis educator or a medical healthcare practitioner who is trained in cannabis medicine prior to experimenting with cannabis for medicinal purposes. The topics and statements discussed are based on our research and experience and have not been evaluated by any regulatory body.
