I listened to the full first season and the early part of the second season of the show and found this frustratingly inert. Firstly, the 4 female lead characters sound the same from a writing standpoint. There’s the same cadence to the dialogue and the same jokes. If you’ve ever watched an Aaron Sorkin show, you might get an idea of what it sounds like to have multiple characters all talking in the same way. Add to this the strong similarities in vocal timbre (they all sound like 20-somethings and the person voicing the older character sounds exactly like a 20-something affecting a voice poorly) and I often find myself trying to figure out exactly which character I'm listening to.In addition, there’s a sense that everyone is just sitting around a mike reading lines. There’s not much in the way of emotional peaks and valleys to the acting. So, for example, there’s a scene where a fire has been set. Without much in the way of burning sound effects, the mood has to be set by the actors. One of the characters makes a jump that injures her and there’s just her breathing out loud. No scream, no groan. The scene just sits there and I feel none of the emotional impact I’m supposed to feel.This is compounded by a general feeling that this show lacks stakes. They certainly bring up circumstances where someone’s identity might be exposed or someone’s family might be threatened but then nothing actually happens, and the characters move on to less weighty topics.
