AA E 51 is the return of Josh Barnett! MMA fighter, Bellator, thinker, metalhead and all round good might know him from the Joe Rogan Experience, Lex Friedman and many other podcasts! E 50 is a reflective, mildly celebratory, vaguely ironic look back at the last year and reaching the 50 episode milestone! A game of word association, pros and cons, things learned and unlearned during lockdown. Was making music worth it, being forced into content creating, discovering how many people seem to welcome authoritarianism into their lives and care little for liberty or art. Are you what you sing about? The rebel or dissident you sang about for decades? Normal service will be resumed next week! Support this show See for privacy and opt-out information.
In E 49 AA gets nostalgic and looks back at those formative years when you knew you wanted to be actively part of a sub culture, whether it was joining a band, organising a show, making a fanzine, writing to bands and how a few events recently made him think how do sub cultures survive moving forward? where do people meet, rehearse, form bands and play? Partly inspired by an intimate rehearsal and partly inspired by a documentary about the Minneapolis hardcore scene and the band Husker Du. This ones only music! and what can we do to try and help scenes/sub cultures survive the anti human world we might be sleepwalking into. Support this show See for privacy and opt-out information.
In E 48 AA goes back to 44BC and the Ides of March. Caesar having declared himself Dictator for life and becoming like a King was murdered by Brutus in order to save the Republic. Sound familiar? Since when did Metal fans become so tetchy and triggered by words, yet are happy to lean into the mythology of 70s and 80s musicians who made far greater indiscretions? and finally to a second cancelled S.Patricks Day, how a handful of confused looking tourists wearing leprachaun outfist standing in the empty streets of a shut down city summed up 2021 so far. In E 47 AA discusses the sad passing of LG from Entombed, and tells the story of his dramatic injury time winning goal at a metal soccer tournament! The situation with Adam from Behemoth and his Blasphemy court case and why it has his total support Freedom of expression, freedom of speech, the freedom to Blaspheme, satirise and poke fun and offend institutions, people and religions being one fo the cornerstones of civilised society is more important than anything else, including your right to be offended. The recent surge in ticket sales for music festivals in the Uk being a positive sign for the live Music Industry but will it be hamstrung by health and safety and civil liberty issues? We all have to wait and see......Support this show See for privacy and opt-out information.
In E 46 AA discusses how nice it would be to just do a normal thing, how mentally exhausting lockdown is. Tries to put some nuance on the recent Protests in Dublin/Ireland and place them in a historical framework of Irish society and culture. Organise something outdoors and lads will show up for the ruck! Examines our mythical rebellious image and complicated relationship to authority. In the second half AA contemplates the influence of big tech, the idea that we are entering a new age of Feudalism, what that might mean and considers what society will look like if we all become UBI serfs. With an extra helping of madness this week!!!! Support this show See for privacy and opt-out information.
In Episode 45 I talk to my old mate Nick Barker, it's also a video cast over on my Youtube channel, just search Alan Averill. We chat about the old days, 80s and 90s underground scenes, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Lock Up, Brujeria and all the other bands he's sat behind the kit for! I also bring up the fact that Nick has probably played on the two biggest selling second wave Black Metal albums of all time! Not bad for a lad from Chesterfield! In AA E 44 Alan continues the theme of the 'do we have to agree with the artists we love' episode and discusses freedom of speech but mainly debates freedom, and the difference between what it means for people who maybe take it for granted and people who either have it to lose or are from countries that don't have it at all. Observations about the new Adam Curtis documentary and general musings on lockdown, liberty and brand loyalty! Support this show See for privacy and opt-out information.
In E 43 AA rambles about John from Iced Earth's Capitol Hill guest appearance, do we have to agree with the beliefs, politics or actions of the artists that we like? if not, who decides who has the right to cancel them or decide for you if you can hear or see them? is that right? can live music possibly go underground in lockdown? is it even possible when we all carry our phones everywhere. How does art survive in a climate where every expression is potentially held to health and safety concerns and let's give it up for influencers rioting photos ops!Support this show See for privacy and opt-out information.

In E 41 Alan finally gets round to tackling The Great Reset now that everyone is talking about it! Yet tries to hold the line and find the grey area between how a polarised society and mainstream media seem to view it, on the one hand those who see authoritarian conspiracy and on the other those who dismiss it as a figment of our imagination! Can we blame people really for being driven mad by it? considering they have been inside for a year in their own algorithm without the humanity that provides reason and judgement? A little from column A, B and C might be true. Also! get wrecked New Zealand!!! Support this show See for privacy and opt-out information.

In E 39 AA reflects on current events in the US, reacts to a statement about touring and the hermit lifestyle from Nick Cave, considers the implications of the stage being taken from us, it's spiritual, magical, physical and emotional worth, why we feel awkward saying that in a modern world where music seems to be more and more reduced to a commodity that is has worth, and some dumb stories from touring the US, being propositioned by ladies of the night, run ins with meth heads and meeting Journey.....Don't stop Believin' folks.........Support this show See for privacy and opt-out information.
AA looks back over the dumpster fire of 2020, the year the world lost its mind, rakes the coals and sifts the ashes looking to make some sense of it and decide whether he lost his mind also, or not. The culture wars reaching boiling point, what the Arts really means to people, coping mechanisms, why Bruce Springsteen is sentimental schlock, digital authoritarianism, why no one cares, listening trends, books, keeping fit and not falling off the ledge! In the Immortal words of Scooter FCK 2020......Support this show See for privacy and opt-out information.

Bonus Episode 34 is a slightly different one in light of Alan releasing some new music with his other band Dread Sovereign. This slightly shorter podcast tells the story of the band and ends with the new single itself! A blatant bit of self promotion. Normal service will be resumed next week! to order the album!!Support this show See for privacy and opt-out information.
In E 33 Alan unwisely does some Ozzy impersonating, plays his dusty old acoustic guitar, and attempts to explain the Devil's Interval. Before launching into an unplanned ramble on why Punk never killed metal, why it always claimed the moral high ground and is not the working class social wedge some believe it to be, with tongue firmly in cheek, before ending on the influence it had over Black Metal. Even more unwisely he then ends by reading some Seneca in a fit of pretension! Support this show See for privacy and opt-out information.
In what we can consider part 2 of the sidebar 'Freedom is not the Default setting of Society' Alan looks at the year 1974 and the simple thesis that if you were a betting man you would have backed Communism, Military Juntas and Crypto Fascist Authoritarianism for the Win when looking at a Map of the World, and that we as a society take the F word for granted right now. Yep there's also silly accents and some self deprecation. Support this show See for privacy and opt-out information.
