RATING
The Am I funny podcast, as stated on its website aims to follow “one man’s 8 week journey to learn and perform stand-up comedy for the very first time”.No doubt about it, this is a fantastic idea. Unfortunately while this podcast is about comedy, it’s not actually funny. Or interesting. And it's very slow and repetitive. Leon is the guy who’ll be performing the stand-up set at the end of the series (must be said, he is a likeable guy). He's a radio producer and consequently has heaps of famous comedian friends which he uses for advice on how to prepare for the upcoming set throughout each episode. But this opportunity is completely wasted by asking the comedians predictable and inane questions and only using very short soundbites from the interviews in the episodes. He had the opportunity to tap into an enormous wealth of knowledge and experience as well as explore their personal theories behind writing and performing comedy. He didn’t. We're about 6 episodes into this podcast and he's about to perform but nothing has really happened. One episode was literally him ringing some friends and asking if they thought he was funny for 30 minutes.…that’s it. And then ringing his mum to see if she was available on the night of the gig. Gripping, insightful stuff..... Also, in what I assume is an attempt to create drama the podcast is also littered with bouts of what sounds like faux anxiety and melodrama. My apologies to Leon if this is all genuine, but it certainly sounds completely fabricated in order to actually include some substance in a podcast which thus far has none. Leaves you feeling a bit manipulated by the producers. The production qualities are quite good, but there's not much that actually happens in the way of storyline, insights or laughs. This could have been great, but in the end it's essentially one man walking around saying "I'm nervous about doing comedy" for 8 weeks while holding a microphone. Would I recommend Am I funny? Nope.
