RATING
Arcadia might start a little rough, but it's well worth pushing through. As the first audio fiction podcast from Law of Names Media, Arcadia, CA is clearly both a labour of love and a learning experience, and it's almost as wonderful to experience that evolution of technique on the part of the creators as it is to join Niko on his journey as he discovers the secret history of his family and the secrets of his mother Holly's hometown. Full disclosure: I don't like teen narratives, as a rule. They're not something I seek out. Being a teen gave me too much grief and misery to want to revisit the experience in fiction. And with that said? I like the teens in Arcadia. They're clearly and readably teenagers, but not the in same way as you might expect from something that is a Teen Story. Arcadia is a story about a kid who is probably neurodivergent reluctantly getting used to an unexpected relocation while also finding himself increasingly more embroiled in a complex miasma of secrets, small town social hierarchy, and the arcane rules of dealing with faeries that are less fairy godmother, more Rumpelstiltskin, and even more "distant and uncompromising court of nobles that expect you to keep your end of the bargain not from trust in your fear or loyalty, but because they've made perfectly certain you have no other option but to do so."Poor Niko just wants to make a movie.
