After hearing Kyle’s story on the last episode, it’s Daniel’s turn to be in the hot-seat. What are his views on what the Bible has to say about LGBTQ relationships? What did Jesus have to say about sexual ethics? And how has the modern church failed in these matters? Kyle and Daniel discuss and disagree.

Daniel referees to several passages in the Bible. The Sermon on the Mount (found in Matthew 5-7) includes Jesus’s words:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:27-28, English Standard Version).

The story of Jesus and the woman accused of adultery is found in John 8:3-11.

“The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”  (John 8:3-11, English Standard Version)

Daniel mentions our forthcoming interviews with biblical scholars Wesley Hill and Barry Danylak. Expect these interviews to be released as bonus episodes later this season.

Daniel also mentioned a review written by Manhattan pastor Timothy Keller, which talks more about comparing slavery to homosexual relations in the Bible: http://t.co/QgvSXYlFl1

Further Reading:

Daniel talked about how the Old Testament law ought to be read in the context of the storyline of the Bible. This beautiful video by The Bible Project offers an elegant explanation of how the law fits into that story and you should watch it: https://youtu.be/3BGO9Mmd_cU.

The also have a video explaining the strange shellfish laws found in the Bible: https://youtu.be/WmvyrLXoQio

Daniel also discussed the New Testament letter of Philemon, and The Bible Project also made a video explaining that book: https://youtu.be/aW9Q3Jt6Yvk

Finally, Daniel’s convictions on how Christians should talk about the LGBTQ community are echoed in this blog post written in response to the conservative Christian statement on sexual ethics. We will discuss these themes more in our forthcoming interview with Wesley Hill.
