1:17
perspective as a CAA . At

1:22

1:28
life by design into a podcast

2:15
Anesthetist at the end
2:17
of spring this year , spring 2024

2:35
. So welcome everyone
2:37

2:46
listening , and to all of those who
2:48
are considering becoming a CAA
2:50
and tuning in to hear more of
2:53
the behind the scenes , to get a feel of what
2:55
their future life could hold . I
2:57
welcome you all . This community
3:00
is so special to me and
3:02
I really am excited to be back
3:04
. So let's jump into this
3:06
season four episode on how
3:08
going viral changed my life . Okay
3:11
, y'all . So let's start with a bit of the
3:13
setup , the backstory about how this
3:15
viral video even came into existence
3:17
. So this
3:20
year , at the Quad A Conference , which
3:22
is the national conference for certified
3:24
anesthesiologist assistants the
3:26
Quad A is our , like , national governing
3:29
board At the national conference this
3:31
year , which was in Orlando , I
3:34
was speaking and
3:36
recording that podcast that you just heard
3:39
. If you listened to the last episode , it was a live
3:41
interview with the current Quad
3:43
A president , whose name is Danny Massaros . So
3:46
I was there doing those two things and
3:48
Chabeli and I , who have become friendly
3:51
because we're both CAAs
3:53
and content creators and we
3:55
knew that each other was going to be at the Quad
3:57
A . So as I'm
3:59
sort of finishing up my day from
4:02
speaking and doing the live interview , which was the first day of the live interview
4:04
, which was the first day of the quad A , which
4:06
was a Friday , I run into
4:08
Jebelly in the hallway , who actually
4:11
had a whole bunch of flight issues and got there
4:13
really late . So she was kind of running
4:15
into sort of the midday of
4:17
day one and she and I
4:19
met and we hugged . We had never seen
4:21
each other in person before and
4:27
we hugged . We had never seen each other in person before and shortly after meeting she asked if I
4:29
would be interested in recording just a real quick interview for
4:31
her YouTube channel . She had brought
4:34
her supplies and was trying to get little interviews
4:36
about people's financial journeys
4:38
. Chabeli is really interested in financial
4:41
literacy as a CAA and how
4:43
our profession has helped her meet
4:46
goals towards financial independence
4:48
and early retirement . And
4:51
so she was like you know , you're a part-time CAA
4:53
there's not a lot of part-time CAAs
4:56
and you've been CAA for so
4:58
long . You're kind of out in the public eye already . Would
5:00
you mind sharing some of your financial
5:02
numbers and just any
5:04
part of the journey that you're comfortable sharing
5:07
? And I , of course , was riding high off
5:09
of really bearing my heart and soul
5:11
, you know , in these two big ways
5:13
of the quad A . I was like , yeah , absolutely , I'm
5:15
an open book , let's do it . So we
5:17
just kind of usher ourselves over to the
5:19
side of this huge hallway , like
5:21
in this massive hotel where
5:23
we're having this huge conference , and
5:25
just at a little side table she
5:27
clips a mic onto me and asked
5:29
me maybe five questions . The interview
5:32
was maybe 10 minutes and
5:34
at the end she was like okay , this is great , good job
5:36
. I'm going to look through what I have
5:39
after the quad day ends and I'll probably create a YouTube
5:41
video . I'll let you know what comes of it . Okay
5:43
, cool , so
5:50
we go about our day . The rest of the quad A happens . I basically am a participant for
5:52
the remainder of the quad A . It was a fantastic , amazing , super
5:55
exhausting experience . Personally
5:58
, I was coming off of basically
6:00
two professional highs , two
6:02
life goals . Speaking
6:04
on the Quad A stage about CAA
6:06
wellness and then doing that live interview
6:09
. Those were just goals I had set out for myself
6:11
, probably in 2020
6:13
, like far off goals , like maybe
6:16
one day that would happen . And then this
6:18
year , in 2024 , those two things both
6:20
happened and I just felt
6:22
so embodied . I was
6:25
so proud of
6:27
where my profession had
6:29
allowed me to go in terms of like
6:31
reaching . What I felt like was this
6:33
full expression of who I am
6:35
, like I'm not just a CAA , but I'm
6:37
also a speaker and a teacher
6:40
and a leader and you
6:42
know all the things . I just was feeling so
6:44
, so good . And then , over the course of the
6:46
remainder of the quad A , after I did this interview
6:48
with Chabeli , I don't
6:50
know , my body just started to crash
6:53
, like my mental , my physical energy started
6:55
to crash . I suppose that's
6:57
probably normal after you do something huge
6:59
, I guess . But it was so surprising
7:02
and shocking to me that by the end
7:04
of the quad A , I found myself
7:06
really reconsidering
7:08
everything I thought that this
7:10
moment was going to launch me into . I
7:13
, for example , had taken a bunch
7:16
of emails at the Quad A
7:18
when I was speaking . I had people
7:20
, you know , hit a QR code and then input their information
7:22
and we were going to start this wellness
7:25
initiative and I just had so much energy
7:27
and I think over 60 people
7:29
put in their email and before
7:32
the quad day , I thought , okay , I'm going to do this with the
7:34
emails and then we're going to like , do
7:36
this initiative . And you know all
7:38
the things . This is not new
7:40
. If you're not familiar with my story
7:42
, you can go back and listen to my process
7:44
episodes . But I'm a dreamer , I
7:47
am creative , I am passionate
7:49
. I am also really capable . I think
7:51
CAAs are all really capable
7:53
and so oftentimes we get
7:56
an idea and we're like , yeah , we're going to do that
7:58
, let's make it happen . And then we hit the ground at
8:00
100 and just you know , drive
8:02
it down . And at
8:08
100 , and just you know , drive it down . And maybe , like this instance , you find yourself
8:11
just totally burned out , not necessarily overwhelmed , but I just had no energy
8:13
. I just I couldn't understand how
8:16
I was ever going to go on . And
8:18
, of course , when you're tired and low
8:20
, everything feels doom and gloom , but that's
8:22
basically my headspace . When I was leaving the Quad
8:24
A , I just wasn't sure what I was
8:26
going to do . I didn't know how I was ever going to sustain
8:29
the energy it appeared it was going
8:31
to take to do all the things
8:33
as well as live the other aspects
8:35
of my life . And so I flew home
8:37
and I just , you know , over the next
8:39
couple of days , just laid low . I
8:42
gave myself a lot of permission to rest
8:44
, which has been a new skill that I've
8:46
learned how to implement , and
8:48
I try to give myself a lot of compassion
8:51
and not beat myself up over , you
8:54
know , not immediately editing the episode
8:56
with Dani or not immediately
8:58
emailing everyone who I had connected
9:01
with or following up on leads on the
9:03
podcast . I just kind of let it set
9:06
for a while , which was extremely
9:08
uncomfortable and also basically
9:10
my only option because I was so exhausted
9:13
. And then , about
9:16
maybe three or four days into this sort
9:18
of rest , reset period after the quad A
9:20
, chabeli texts me
9:22
and was like , hey , I finished editing
9:25
the interview we did and it
9:27
actually is going to become
9:29
some short form content , which
9:31
is content creator speak
9:33
for , like the little videos on Instagram
9:36
and TikTok , like a reel and then a video
9:38
on TikTok whatever those are called . And
9:42
you know , cool , great , sounds awesome , chabeli , go ahead
9:44
. And Chabeli was like well , I just wanted to let you know that
9:46
I have a feeling that this might
9:48
get some traction . You're talking about
9:50
money , you're talking about money in kind of a different
9:53
way and you're just being really open . So
9:55
I wouldn't be surprised if you get
9:57
some traction off of this . You know , just wanted to let
9:59
you know . Okay , cool , sounds awesome , trebelli
10:01
. So she posted
10:03
the next day . I have an account for
10:05
the Awakened Nestis , if you'd like to follow me
10:07
on Instagram at Awakenedestis
10:09
, and I get a notification
10:12
that Chabeli posted the video and
10:14
very quickly I can see that you know , certainly
10:17
more people than my normal amount
10:19
are viewing this reel and
10:21
they're posting questions and they're tagging me
10:24
and I'm getting some DMs and I
10:26
was like , oh my gosh , look just what Chabeli said . Like
10:28
it's getting some traction . This is awesome . I'm
10:30
answering these questions just one on one
10:32
, like when you DM me or comment
10:34
. You know I'm by no means flooded with
10:36
them on a normal basis , so I just message
10:39
you right back and
10:41
I'm like , okay , and it kind of starting to pick up
10:43
. And I'm like I'm gonna go check TikTok . Just
10:45
, I have an account , but I don't use it very often
10:47
for the podcast , and by that I mean almost
10:50
never . And I find
10:52
the video that Chabeli posted there
10:54
and on TikTok it had almost
10:57
a million views within a
10:59
very short period of time as soon as it was posted
11:01
. And I was like , oh my goodness , like it
11:04
appears like this maybe is going viral on TikTok
11:06
. So I go back to Instagram , just
11:08
like in the moment , to see what's going on . Back
11:14
to Instagram , just like in the moment , to see what's going on , and
11:16
on Instagram it's at like 500,000 views . Now , in perspective
11:18
here , most of my reels that I
11:20
create , I get
11:22
maybe 3000 views or something . So
11:24
this has far exceeded anything
11:26
that I've ever done myself or been
11:28
involved in . And again , this is something
11:31
that Chabeli created and Chabeli posted
11:33
. But because my name was in it , like I was getting
11:35
tagged and everything within it
11:37
, and it just
11:39
snowballed from there very , very
11:42
quickly . And so I'm texting
11:44
Chabeli like this is happening
11:46
. This is going viral . What are you doing ? Are you
11:48
trying to answer all these comments ? I
11:50
was just so fixated , for whatever
11:53
reason , on trying to answer every
11:55
single comment and every single DM and
11:57
give people really thoughtful responses
12:00
. I mean , this has never happened to me before , so that was
12:02
just my gut response . This is crazy
12:04
, this is wild . This is , you know , really exciting
12:06
. Also , like very awesome . But I
12:08
, of course , am tapping away trying to answer
12:11
everything and
12:20
I get a DM on Instagram from a mom of a high schooler who's asking
12:23
me very intricate questions about her high schoolers courses and whether she's gonna
12:25
I don't know have the prereqs to then get into college
12:27
, then have the prereqs into AA school , and
12:29
just very detailed . Like I could tell she just wanted
12:31
me to make it easy for her as opposed
12:34
to doing the research herself
12:36
. And I just had this moment of clarity
12:38
, like , okay , I can see
12:40
what's going on here . I
12:42
already don't have any energy to give
12:44
to myself or to my family
12:46
coming off the quad A . And then
12:48
this huge , huge professional
12:50
moment happens for me , and I'm not talking about the quad A lecture . And then this huge , huge professional moment happens for me , and I'm not talking
12:53
about the quad , a lecture , or interviewing Danny
12:55
. I'm talking about this viral video
12:57
Like this is a massive exposure
13:00
moment for me and for my platform
13:02
and my message . And
13:04
I had this burning itchy
13:06
like , oh God , I got to capitalize on this and
13:08
I got to push and I got to move forward
13:10
and I got to make more videos and respond
13:13
. And this bless
13:16
high school mother who DM'd me just
13:18
snapped me out of it enough to be like , oh
13:21
, I see what's happening here . What's happening
13:23
here is the thing that I always
13:26
do . I am passionate
13:28
and I get too deep into something and
13:30
then I lose my boundaries and
13:33
I forget why I'm doing it and
13:35
I just end up sacrificing
13:38
too many other things
13:40
in order to accomplish the
13:42
goal or the thing that I had set out for myself
13:44
. And I just felt this
13:46
so viscerally when I
13:48
was going through this viral video
13:51
moment . And
13:53
you know , when you've been learning a lesson like your whole
13:55
life , I've probably been trying to learn this lesson
13:58
since 2020 . And
14:00
the you know universe or spirit
14:03
or life or whatever you
14:05
believe , keeps sending you ways to learn
14:07
the same lesson and
14:09
it just sort of sinks in . But then you
14:12
do it again and again , and again . And then at one
14:14
time in your life it just happens and you're
14:16
like , oh , I
14:19
see this isn't ever going to stop
14:21
happening until I put my foot down
14:23
, learn this lesson and
14:25
move forward with a lot more intentionality
14:28
. And in prepping
14:30
for this podcast and sharing this story
14:33
, I was telling my husband and
14:35
he's like , well , what is the lesson ? Like you
14:37
need to say what the lesson is . And he's like you're
14:39
being too , you know , up in the clouds
14:41
with it . I'm like well , you
16:01
know , when you are saying
16:04
yes to something , and that yes , by
16:07
virtue of saying yes , means you've said no
16:09
to a thousand other things , and
16:12
I always struggle with that because I
16:14
want to do those thousand other things
16:16
as well as the thing I said yes to . And
16:18
he was like yeah
16:20
, you mean the thing
16:23
that I told you back in 2020
16:25
when we first started our podcast together
16:27
. We were talking about this exact
16:30
lesson and how , during
16:32
that time , I was trying to transition from
16:34
full-time anesthesia work to part-time
16:37
work . And you know
16:39
, I was just had all these balls in the air
16:41
. And he's like I said that exact thing
16:43
to you in 2020 on air
16:45
, on the podcast you could go back and
16:47
listen to it , I'm like well , apparently
16:50
it took several more times
16:52
and four more years to really ingrain
16:55
that lesson that if you
16:57
do not pick your yeses with intentionality
17:00
, you will be saying no to
17:02
a lot of other things that you also
17:05
want to be doing . And if you
17:07
also happen to find yourself an Enneagram
17:09
3 or a perfectionist
17:12
or type A or any of the
17:14
attributes that I would say a lot of CAAs
17:16
have , you're going to say yes
17:18
to something and if it's without
17:21
intention , you're very quickly going to
17:23
find yourself burned out
17:25
, overwhelmed and looking
17:27
back on your life thinking how the heck
17:29
did I get here ? How am I up
17:31
at 2 am answering some high school
17:33
mom's DM and feeling guilty
17:36
about not answering the
17:38
DM ? And this
17:40
final time , learning this
17:42
lesson of saying yes means
17:44
also saying no was
17:47
such a life-changing
17:49
moment because I had the perspective
17:51
of remembering
17:53
all the other times that I've learned this
17:56
lesson in part and I
17:58
could see how this
18:00
was a pattern in my life and if I
18:02
didn't take this moment this
18:04
time in my life spring of 2024
18:06
, when I went viral talking
18:08
about money and my passion for the
18:10
CAA profession and how I like
18:12
to use it to live my dream life . If
18:15
I don't take this huge
18:17
moment for me instead
18:20
of for everyone else , I
18:22
will continue this pattern in my life and
18:25
I'll wake up when I'm 60 or
18:27
70 and 80 and wonder how I got
18:29
there . And so I
18:32
decided to do something different . I decided
18:34
to do something I have never done before , which
18:37
is to step back , go
18:40
behind the curtain , step
18:42
into the shadow whatever metaphor
18:44
works for you . I basically
18:46
realized not only did I need
18:48
to rest , but I needed to go silent
18:51
or quiet . I needed to stop
18:53
putting myself out there and trying
18:56
to meet other people's expectations , and
18:58
I stopped trying to produce
19:00
and perform , even though
19:02
those things felt good in the moment , I
19:05
could tell that I wasn't clear on
19:07
what it was that I wanted
19:09
versus what I was doing for other people
19:11
, and I knew that
19:13
this was a time in my life . I was also
19:15
just about to turn 40 . I turned 40
19:17
May 24th of 2024 , and
19:20
everything really just spiraled
19:23
into this perfect moment where I
19:25
chose myself and decided
19:27
to get quiet over the course of this summer
19:29
and figure out what
19:31
I truly want , to say yes , to
19:34
understand what that means
19:36
. I then say no to , and
19:38
to be super intentional about how
19:40
I move forward over the
19:42
next year , five years , 10 years
19:44
so that I don't wake up when I'm 80
19:47
and wonder how I got there . And
19:49
so I didn't know exactly
19:51
how I was going to move through this moment
19:53
, through this period of stepping back
19:55
, but I just knew I needed to start immediately
19:58
. So I did what I had to do
20:00
. I wrapped up season three of the podcast
20:02
, which was just another episode . I
20:05
sort of posted something on Instagram saying
20:07
I'm going away for a little while
20:09
, I'm retreating back into myself to work on
20:11
some things . I'll be back when
20:13
I'm back . And I
20:16
really got slow
20:19
and quiet . My kids wrapped up
20:22
the end of their school year . I
20:24
really challenged myself to
20:27
question why it was so
20:29
uncomfortable for me to
20:31
not answer
20:33
the DMs on the video , to
20:35
not follow up with all of the emails
20:37
that I had gathered at the Quad A and the leads
20:40
that I had gathered for the podcast . What
20:42
was it about that that made me
20:44
feel so deeply uncomfortable ? And
20:47
I did a lot of meditation
20:50
and journaling and walking and
20:52
I also during this time , during this summer
20:54
break , turned towards my husband
20:57
and my kids to
20:59
fill up my cup from them . To
21:02
really understand . Do
21:04
I need more than just my
21:06
husband and my kids and my clinical
21:08
work that I
21:12
think I want to do or that feel passionate
21:14
for me , like , what is it about those
21:16
that I need , and
21:23
could I find that elsewhere , in a way that doesn't pull me away or keep me up at night or , you
21:25
know , create more work for me ? And I
21:27
just wanted to be so intentional about
21:30
what I choose and how I spend
21:32
my time . And that is such a
21:34
beautiful privilege and it's something
21:36
that I just want to scream from the
21:39
mountaintops that the CAA profession
21:41
puts you in this privileged position
21:43
if you use it as a tool to
21:46
have the freedom to choose , to
21:48
be really intentional and
21:50
I was just realizing that I wasn't using
21:52
it to its full capacity because
21:55
I had never gotten quiet enough to truly
21:57
ask what is it that only
22:00
I want , if no one's
22:02
watching me , if money's not an issue
22:04
, if I'm not looking for external
22:06
validation , what is it that
22:08
I want to have in my life ? And
22:11
basically that was all
22:13
of May asking myself that question
22:15
, all of June . By
22:17
the end of July I started to feel some clarity
22:20
and certainly by August I
22:22
started to really see what
22:24
was for me and what
22:26
was for other people , and
22:28
I mean in all aspects of my life . But
22:30
of course , I'm sharing the professional aspects
22:32
with you , because that's mostly what you all are interested
22:35
in , and I really came up
22:37
with a yes to
22:39
two things . I want to do these two
22:41
things which I'm about to tell you , one of which , of
22:43
course , is season four of this podcast . But
22:46
I want to do these two things , throw
22:48
my energy and the time that I have allotted
22:50
to these things and sort of
22:52
jump on that train and see where
22:54
they go , because I know what
22:56
they add to my life and I
22:59
also know that I can support my other
23:01
yeses . I want to say yes to my husband
23:03
and my marriage . I want to say yes to my kids
23:05
and to my friends and my extended
23:07
friends , and I want to say yes
23:10
to maintaining our house
23:12
and just . I could go on and on . But I know
23:14
that I can do these two things and
23:16
say yes to the other things in my life that I want
23:19
, and be okay with all the no's
23:21
that that means . One of the no's is that my house
23:23
is oftentimes quite messy . There's
23:25
things that I can't do because
23:27
I'm choosing to say yes to this . My
23:30
first yes is this podcast
23:32
, season four . This podcast
23:34
brings me so much joy that I can't
23:37
get anywhere else . It
23:39
fills a piece of my soul
23:42
. Truly , this storytelling
23:44
aspect , hearing your stories
23:46
, interacting with all of you , sharing
23:49
such amazing CAA stories
23:51
with this community , just absolutely
23:54
makes me feel whole and I
23:56
couldn't say no to it . I
23:58
had to do this , at least for season
24:01
four . And so here I am and I'm
24:03
so grateful that you're here and I'm so
24:05
excited to walk this season four journey with
24:07
you all , because you will be walking
24:09
all of this life-changing-ness
24:11
right along with me this season . And
24:14
the other yes that I am finally
24:16
finally saying absolutely yes
24:18
to is doing
24:20
CAA Matters . Caa
24:23
Matters is the wellness curriculum that I
24:25
created for first year AA students
24:27
. I have started marketing it
24:30
to schools . I'm going to lead
24:32
that and teach that and I'm really looking for
24:34
AA school partners who are
24:36
interested in innovation and
24:38
CAA wellness and being on the cutting
24:41
edge of a whole-bodied
24:43
CAA , so a
24:45
CAA who's healthy and thriving , not
24:48
just in their grades and performance
24:50
, but really can sustain a
24:52
lifelong career that is fulfilling
24:55
and healthy and
24:57
well . So I'm moving forward
24:59
with that and I won't list the things
25:01
that I've said no to . But those
25:04
two yeses mean that I've said no to
25:06
a lot of other professional things , and
25:08
now , every time a new opportunity
25:11
or time spent
25:13
elsewhere comes my way , I can really
25:15
filter it through this discernment
25:18
of does this support my two
25:20
yeses ? Does this support my podcast
25:22
? Yes , and the CAA matters
25:24
yes , and if it doesn't , then
25:26
I know it's a no for me . And that
25:29
intentionality has been so
25:31
freeing , it has been so
25:33
joyful . It's actually opened
25:35
up more time in my life to
25:38
move slower , which is something
25:40
I value , and to
25:42
dive deeper into my meditation practice
25:44
. I recently graduated
25:47
from a mindfulness meditation teacher training
25:49
, which is something that I wanted to do for me
25:51
, and I've been incorporating that
25:54
into the CAA Matters curriculum
25:56
, and so those two
25:58
things are really enveloping each
26:00
other , and I'm just so
26:02
thrilled to be on the other side of this
26:05
lesson of learning that I
26:07
have to be so intentional with my yeses
26:09
, because saying yes to one
26:11
thing means saying no to a lot of other
26:14
things , and I want to be in control
26:16
of what I say yes to and
26:18
I don't want to be functioning just to make
26:20
other people happy , and so I
26:23
hope this podcast was enlightening
26:25
to you . I hope hearing my story maybe
26:28
gave you an aha or one
26:30
step closer to learning the lesson that
26:32
your life is trying to teach you . If
26:35
you're a CAA or an AA student
26:37
or perspective and have any questions for
26:39
me , you can go to the show notes . There's
26:41
a way to text me directly . You could
26:43
also follow me on Instagram at
26:45
Awakened Anesthetist , and
26:48
I will get back to you . When I get back to you
26:50
, certainly , I am no longer swamped
26:52
from the viral video that has all
26:54
passed swamped
27:00
from the viral video that has all passed and I just really encourage you all to consider
27:02
how your CAA profession or your future profession can
27:04
really allow you to live your own life
27:06
by design . And
27:09
if you want more stories on
27:11
how other people are doing that
27:13
, or to be expanded by CAA
27:15
stories so that you know it's
27:17
possible , keep following along
27:19
. There's going to be a lot of that on season four
27:21
, as well as a lot more wellness episodes
27:24
things that I have found helpful as a
27:26
CAA on my own wellness journey
27:28
. I'm so excited to share that with all of you
27:30
. All right , I think that's the story
27:32
I wanted to share . That's how going viral
27:35
changed my life , and let's
27:37
talk soon , y'all .
