The final episode of Can We Cult? We love all of you!
Here we go -- Waco part two! We did our best to pull from multiple sources, and like we said last week - we have NEVER been so torn over a story on this show. It's heavy and stressful and sad and confusing. We hope we do some of it justice as Meagan tells us what happened on the 51st day of the siege, and the dramatic investigations that came after. For our final, 60th episode, we are going to be thanking you, telling stories, and wrapping up this awesome experience. We would love to hear from you! If you have a cult/fringe group/charasmatic leader that you've interacted with - tell us about it! If you have stories, thoughts, jokes, whatever -- send it to us at canwecult at gmail. We want to include it all in our last show! We love you!
Y’all voted. We watched a lot of documentaries, read a lot of conspiracy theories, dove into government investigations, and here we are: Waco. This week, Allie talks to us about the creation of the Branch Davidians, the rise of David Koresh, and the first 50 days of the Waco siege. We’ve never been more conflicted about any group we’ve discussed. Thanks again for all of your love and support around our decision to end CWC. Next week we have part two, and the week after that we will bring you our final, 60th episode! We love you and we look forward to spending the next few weeks with you!
We’re not going to lie to you - this week starts out with a fairly big bomb dropped. After many attempts at starting the episode we just had to blurt it out: Can We Cult is coming to an end after a year and a half of horrifying bliss. However - we have four more episodes coming your way before we say goodbye! This week, Allie introduces us to the first leader named “Zak” that we’ve ever discussed, whose Sears home in Ohio is the stuff of early twenties dreams. Then, Meg tells us about a Russian cartoon cult that may or may not be the longest troll ever, and she can’t even figure it out. Help! We are excited to bring you a two-parter on a beast of a cult in the coming weeks, and a final goodbye episode after that! Check our Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for upcoming polls to help us pick our final group! We love you and we look forward to spending the next month with you!
We’re back to our regularly structured tapings, but we’ve been left alone again. Yikes! We had only one software hiccup amidst the heat wave, but thanks to some cold packs placed strategically, we got on with the show. This week, Allie debunks some beliefs about the Quiverfull Movement and Meg lightens things up with the carbohydrate-based god of our dreams. This week we have part two of our coverage of Warren Jeffs, starting at around 2004 when he was arrested outside of Las Vegas. If you haven’t listened to last week’s, please do that! We highly recommend the documentary Prophet’s Prey, which we watched together. It can be rented on iTunes and YouTube! We also HIGHLY recommend going to visit our friends at Getting Off Podcast, who just happened to run a Jeffs two-parter on the same weeks as us. Their brilliant legal minds do things we simply can’t, and dive into some law that is both fascinating and upsetting. We will see you next week for a standard episode and thank you so much for the support with our last two two-parters! - If you want to drink coffee out of a mug with our faces, or wear our faces on a shirt, you can now head over to https://canwecult.threadless.com/ for your merch pleasures. This is the first in a two-part episode on Warren Jeffs and — wow, is it sad. This week Allie talks about the societal impact of polygamy, the rise of FLDS, Warren Jeffs, and lead up to charges filed against him in 2004. Allie references this Atlantic article regarding the societal impact of polygamy and it’s a really important read: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2006/04/one-man-many-wives-big-problems/304829/ We highly recommend the documentary Prophet’s Prey, which we watched together. We are so glad that so many folks liked hearing last week’s coverage of WBC, and we are thrilled to have this week’s episode go live. This week we chat with listener and friend of the show, Cat, about her experience growing up among The Phelps Family, and her current experience working across the street from the main WBC compound. We ask her lots of dumb questions and she totally allows it! We should also mention that we recorded this weeks ago, so we heard about her organization’s upcoming museum before y’all did! After contemplating auditioning for a Disney series, it’s a full-blown lady double team! For the first of a two part focus on the infamous Westboro Baptist Church, MK and Allie talk about the rise of Fred Phelps, the beliefs of the Church, and some of the inside info former members have shared. Next week, you’ll hear an interview we did with a listener and great human, Cat Jones, about her experience growing up among The Phelps Family, and her current experience working across the street from the main WBC compound. First of all, we want to apologize for our horribly embarrassing Trixie Mattel flub last week. Let’s get that out of the way. We are now in the FIRST episode of the year A.T. (After Trixie)! Thanks for being with us! Allie starts us off with The Temple of the True Inner Light, which is mainly focused on tripping their nards off with the body of Christ, and making terrible websites (check it here … http://psychede.tripod.com/). Meg, as per usual, brings the room down by talking about The Word of Life Christian Center in New York, and the death of Lucas Leonard. - If you want to drink coffee out of a mug with our faces, or wear our faces on a shirt, you can now head over to https://canwecult.threadless.com/ for your merch pleasures. Episode 50?! Seriously?! My god! This week we spend some time reminiscing, and then we double team “I AM Activity” aka "Saint Germain Foundation"! This group is the inspiration for many groups we’ve talked about before (Church Universal Triumphant, anyone?!), had some wild ass plans for the afterlife, and their trip to the Supreme Court is pretty iconic. Thank you for 50 episodes, and all the love. We faced many tests during this recording session: our internet was out, our pollen count was in the 500s, and the neighbors decided to spray their compost bins while we record BUT we tried to keep it light in comparison to last week and we hope you enjoy! Grab you some Benadryl! Allie starts out by giving us a recap on everyone’s favorite female-branding sex cult, NXIVM, and it’s former teen star/sadist representative, Allison Mack. Meagan then tell some of us youngsters about The Merry Pranksters, whose LSD trip to NYC may have been the inspiration for iconic cult imagery. Also - It’s almost episode 50!! After a recap of their best (read: worst) early-2000s fashion, and a short history of the infamous store Gadzooks, we get into the cults. This week was terribly depressing, so we’re sorry about this one; grab a snack and a cozy blanket! Allie starts out by telling us about the $700 jacket of our dreams, created by anti-Catholic cult leader Tony Alamo. Meagan then brings it down further with the story of The Goler Clan, a community in the Canadian mountains whose generations of isolation and incest were uncovered in the 1980s. The articles Allie references can be found here: https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/intelligence-report/2007/ravening-wolf https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/03/us/obituary-tony-alamo-minister-sexual-abuse.html Also - It’s almost EPISODE 50! After a bit too much rose (it’s nearly summer, damn it!) and gushing about the royal wedding, and how much we love all of you, we get to some cults! First, Allie tells us all about the Church of the SubGenius, which might be the greatest cult-adjacent trolling of all time. We love a good Rick Roll, and Meg gets really confused. In retaliation, Meagan brings us a VERY depressing story about a sub-sect of the already cult-like Grail Movement, which led to the prosecution of multiple people for child abuse and assault. What a treat for the ears! Thanks to our #LadyPodSquad buddies, and actual badass women we are huge fans of, at It’s About Damn Crime! This week, we start right off with a delightful discussion about the ways we would like to die. Then it’s off to the races with a chat about Mother’s Day, Judge Judy’s big butt, and the best part of donating to charity! When we get into the juicy stuff, Allie tells us the story of the Pana-Wave Laboratory in Japan, led by Yuko Chino, and completely clad in what look to be costumes for extras on the set of American Horror Story: Asylum. Then, Meagan dives right into the bloodied wafers of Ronald O’Brien. -Shout out to our friends and #LadyPodSquad buddies over at The Lady Killers Podcast for sending us their promo! After a technology glitch that reminded the ladies of their own mortality, they’re back with an episode full of yelling! After a recap of the insanely contrasted weekends they’re coming back from, Allie gives us an update on R Kelly’s bullshit since our Decemer episode, including the new #MuteRKelly movement. After Meagan screams into a pillow during Allie’s segment, the roles reverse as Allie’s head explodes while Meagan discusses Jillian Epperly and her insane claims that salty cabbage water cures cancer! This show was recorded live at Portland’s own Starday Tavern. Thanks to everyone for coming out and talking about racism in Oregon. We discussed the pathetic hate group White Aryan Resistance and its members brutal 1988 killing of student and father Muguleta Seraw. As noted in the show, the Southern Poverty Law Center has identified 18 active hate groups in the state of Oregon. We have a lot of work to do. The gals recount their weekend adventures, give an update on R Kelly and NXIVM, and get to culting! Lordy, Lordy Look Who’s 40!? It's us! This week, Meagan tells us about a prophet named JeZus whose end-times preparedness involves building an Arc, but also eating tacos next to a drum circle. Allie talks about the powerful and heartbreaking book “Educated” by Tara Westover, who grew up isolated with a proselytizing, doomsday-prepping father, hiding behind the guise of the Mormon church. You can find Tara’s book “Educated” here: https://www.amazon.com/Educated-Memoir-Tara-Westover/dp/0399590501 You can find Rezla Aslan’s book “Zealot” here: https://www.amazon.com/ZEALOT-Life-Times-Jesus-Nazareth/dp/140006922X We want to send a big, beautiful, thank you to our #PodernFamily/#LadyPodSquad buddies at Married to Murder as well as our awesome Ear Trumpet Audio siblings at Hunting Houses for sending in their promos! This week is a bit different as we actually chat about our feelings after watching the new Netflix documentary “Wild Wild Country,” which is an incredible inside look at the Rashneesh (which we covered in Episode 15!). We highly recommend it! Also, we talk a bit about the funeral for Charles Manson and speculate on whether or not his grandson, who had the remains handed over to him, has some unsavory plans for his own fame. Perhaps the Manson story isn’t over. Which is annoying. Also - it should be noted that the episode was a little shorter, and ended a bit abruptly, because Meagan’s voice full on gave out. She is losing her week’s long battle with an illness. We want to send a big, beautiful, thank you to #PodernFamily/#LadyPodSquad buddies at Spoop Hour for sending their promo to us! They’ve got the creepy, the spoopy, the goofy, and the doofy!! If you’re looking for some good old fashioned creepy stories, check them out on Twitter (https://www.twitter.com/spoophour ) or their website (http://spoophour.podbean.com ) and listen on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcast fix! Well, the gals are just going to get their new segment called “Yikes! Sorry …” out of the way. We all make mistakes, okay? Also, Allie reminds us of the way we in the Pacific Northwest are easily bamboozled by the elusive sun! Then - we get into cults! Allie talks about Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth (yes, that is how it is spelled) which is considered a music group/an art collective that was targeted during the height of the UK’s Satanic Panic. Thanks to an email from a listener, Meagan talks about the (still active) One Community Church in Ontario, Canada. This very standard-looking evangelical, trying-to-look-cool church has some huge red flags. We want to send a big, beautiful, thank you to #PodernFamily and #LadyPodSquad buddy, Alysa, at Best Forevers Podcast for sending her promo to us! Her show is sweet and lovely and reminds us why we started this show in the first place! First, the CWC gals talk to us about their fancy weekend together, give a PSA to hipster jerks attending all-ages events, and announce a LIVE show here in Portland this April! Both hosts struggle to characterize their groups this week. Is it a cult? Is a fringe group? Is it just a charismatic leader? Allie brings us some details about the Bethel Church of Redding, California, which is really giving their janitor David a hard time and we simply can’t get over it. MK is equally baffled in discussing the story of teachers in Connecticut who were sued after “brainwashing* three sisters into joining their “cult” -- but frankly, nobody knows enough but it is wildly confusing. Even after reading the 70-page lawsuit, Meagan is uncertain of what to think. BUT -- we know we’ve got some unstable adults in the mix! (You can read about the lawsuit here: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/05/23/parents-high-school-daughters-cult-indoctrination_n_5381240.html ) - We want to thank our #PodernFamily buddies at Marble Orchard for contributing their promo to us! This week, an unfortunate incident leads Allie to wear her synthetic wig while recording, and Meagan simply can't handle it. This week we explore two "leaders" who gain their "followers" via YouTube, blogs, and other social media platforms. First, Meagan discusses the death of Steven Mineo, whose decade-long following of Sherry Shriner may have led to his end. The article Meagan references can be found here: https://www.thedailybeast.com/reptile-cult-feud-over-raw-meat-ends-in-death Allie then tells us about The Fellowship of the Martyrs, and their leader Doug Reed's quest for a quiet cave for worship and rehabilitation reasons! You can check out the news article referenced (http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article46952265.html) as well as the group's website (http://www.fellowshipofthemartyrs.com/) if you're interested in going down a rabbit hole! - A huge shout out to our new sponsors (WHAT!?
