While our main issues are not our identity, our identity is usually our main issue. In this sports-crazed, fame-and-fortune, clout-driven, name-dropping society, we all desire to be known, loved, embraced, and accepted…especially athletes. Big games, large crowds, loud screams, air time, and name recognition are dreams come true—until they’re not. Injuries, illnesses, and personal issues can quickly turn a dream season into a living nightmare. Our issues try to take the place of our identity, and before long, we look in the mirror and forget who is staring back, like a beneficiary of an inheritance that has never been claimed. How do we handle life’s sucker punches? Are they ultimately God’s provident blessings in disguise? What does being an athlete have in common with these ideas? I look forward to sharing the answers with you.
