Blood and guts is the topic on this episode of Cigars and Sea Stories. Mike and Bennett are sharing stories from a life lived in combat. Mike recounts the fun times spent cleaning out the highback after running quick reaction force missions in Ramadi. When the wounded need transport, highback is their ride. Gunshots and shrapnel make a helluva mess when they rip through muscle, flesh and bone. Blood clots, entrails, bone-fragments, hair and everything else that makes up a human being needed to be scraped off the kevlar blankets that lined the highback HMMWV. He took it upon himself to clean out the truck alone whenever wounded were transported. There wasn’t any running water, 1 liter bottles were the only option. He poked holes in the tops and started spraying. A push broom helped with the bigger pieces. Every time they had wounded that highback needed to be cleaned; every time.

Bennett and Mike share a few tales about the effects of the RPG-7. The PG-7VL was the enemy’s primary warhead used against U.S. forces, but every once in awhile, they would throw an OG-7. Those things spray shrapnel through a post. The aftermath can be gruesome.

The guys mentioned a previously told sea story about an RPG warhead being removed from a Marine’s thigh only to fall off the Hesco barrier and detonate when they were done.  Here’s a link for your listening enjoyment.
