RATING
A very well-told private detective drama with a supernatural element, but the emphasis is very much on the setting of New York city; who's on the make, who's on the take, and one woman's attempt to navigate through a maze of shady characters whilst ghosts whisper in her ear. Recommended.
So good! Very well done, excellent audio, acting and pacing. This has made it to my favorites.
Brilliant voice acting by a top quality cast is the real selling point of City of Ghosts. There is an interesting story that runs throughout the series, linking various characters together, as well as individual yarns that usually add depth to the main character, private investigator El.Really needs a second season, but the creators seem to have been largely silent since the first run of episodes released.
What makes a good Noir detective? A city full of mystery and crimes and a moody but relatable detective. City of Ghosts gives you all that and complicated family issues between two sisters Eleanor "El" and Talia Rivkin.Talia dreams big and easily can blend into old moneys club. El works in shadows and has her own secret. Since her mother died she heard "voices". Is it a true mystic calling or she is just driving mad? Will it help her to uncover mysteries or will destroy her? Other things I found captivating - intruguing plot, professional voicover (Oh, Sahar's voice!) and magnificent sound design. The city here is so ALIVE AND FILLED WITH EVERYDAY AND SPECIAL SOUNDS, it bought me from ep 1.
It's a solid detective noir story set in modern day New York. What knocked one star from me is underwhelming performance by Golshifteh Farahani (mind that she was my reason to listen in the first place) as well as complete lack of a side to root for.
Took me a couple of episodes to get into the story, but it's intriguing and developed well. I hope it doesn't take too long for the second season to come out!
This is the kind of show you can listen to again and again and find new gems, angles, notice yet another great sound effect or stumble on a detail, you didn´t catch the first time. The sound design manages to tell the story of ghosts (or El´s voices?) in a way that is both easy to understand, and also really captures El´s hardship dealing with them. It´s just excellent work! I also love the side stories, that blends in to the main story, the characters are interesting and easy to tell apart, and the overall production quality is really great.
I've loved the 1st season, and really hope they come back w/ a 2nd one to finish up the story. I want to know how things end.
