An interesting alien invasion story and sci-fi world is in here but I just didn't connect with this show. I felt like I never got to know any of the characters and the story just bounced around too often for me to fully comprehend or care about what was actually going on. They aren't lying about it being a cinematic podcast because they use all the music tracks you'd find under the cinematic filter and just constantly have the music playing to the point of distraction.
I flew through the first 8 episodes today and wanted to keep going. The world is rich with detail and we're getting information in a way that is reminiscent of a mystery, but this is SciFi, but it's got a great balance with action. It's a well written and designed world. The actors and sound designers are doing a great job!
Coexistence is a mix of stunning sound design creating a vivid atmosphere and a confusing story that flits about without clarifcation far too often. As an audio experience, Coexistence is a wonderful listen. Everything just sounds fantastic, with a soundtrack that simultaneously lurks in the background yet also leaps to the forefront. Production is top notch, with some of the most sleek editing I've heard in audio drama. The setting and plot are interesting enough that I was absorbed by them, but keeping track of the story is unnecessarily tricky. Scenes switch with little warning or grounding and too often you're left confused as to where characters are or what the current situation is. As such, I never really felt a connection to the characters and didn't know what I was supposed to root for or against. Dialogue is delivered brilliantly by a great cast but the content is too vague. I get that the team behind Coexistence were clearly trying to steer well clear of exposition and formulaic storytelling but creators need to realise that without visuals, podcasts need to fill in the gaps with sound. Some better sound effects cues or a natural dialogue comments could have grounded scenes much better.Coexistence falls short of being great as it is arguably too ambitious and too keen to be abstract, resulting in a good idea that's too difficult to comprehend.
One of the worst podcasts I've listened to in terms of plot. An incomprehensible mish-mash of generic scifi tropes and clichés applied without any basic understanding of how to effectively utilise them. Robots, evil corporations, aliens, mutated animals, parasitic infections, crooked public figures, hypercapitalism, surveillance state, name it and they have it; but only top quality ingredients does not a good cake ensure, especially if the baker's idea of a recipe is just putting them in willy-nilly in a fascimile of worldbuilding with some godawful 'cinematic' score thrown in.I'd say listening to this feels like listening to an audio version of Michael Bay's Transformers movies but that too is an understatement. The creators display an astounding lack of understanding of audio-only mediums.
Oh - oh - oh! What an intro to this massive scifi audiodrama! Less than a minute in and I´m totally hooked! The sound design, the music, the acting, the world building, the story - everything is just perfect and hits all the right buttons. I´m actually getting goosebumps just writing this!
looking good, hoping to move to 5 stars
Everyone needs to listen to this podcast. It’s amazing all round.
