Pro-European parties retain firm grip on EU parliament

Europe’s mainstream centre-right and centre-left parties have lost their combined majority in the bloc's 751-seat parliament, provisional results suggest.

The far-right in Italy, Britain, France and Poland have come out on top in national votes but failed to make dramatic gains in the European Parliament.

Liberals and Greens in Germany, France, Britain and other states are celebrating big gains which can possibly tip the scale in choosing the head of the EU Commission.

Trump presses Japan over trade gap

US President Donald Trump is pressing Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to even out the trade imbalance with the US.

Trump’s four-day visit to Japan is meant to showcase a strong alliance but has been shadowed by policy disagreements over trade and North Korea.

Appearing to dial down tensions, Trump emphasised he was not seeking a regime change in Iran.

Greek PM calls snap elections after vote defeat

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has called for snap elections after suffering a heavy defeat in the European Parliament elections.

After a severe pounding at the ballot box for his leftist Syriza party, Tsipras decided not to complete his term which expires in October.

A likely date for the ballot is June 30.

At least 30 die in DRC boat accident

At least 30 people died and dozens more were missing after a boat accident in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a local mayor said.

The mishap happened on Saturday night on Lake Mai-Ndombe.

There were more than 350 passengers on board the boat and only 183 were rescued, the mayor said.

UK band Spice Girls to perform in Cardiff

And finally,

The Spice Girls kicked off their reunion tour in Dublin over the weekend to a disappointing start with complaints of terrible audio.

The ultimate 1990s girl band will next play in Cardiff, where more than 50,000 fans are expected to attend.

The Spice Girls, who shot to global fame with their single "Wannabe" in 1996, announced their reunion tour last year.
