This week my guest is Greg Hanson; show promoter, sometimes-drummer, and head of the Brooklyn tape label King Pizza Records. He was kind enough to have me over to his place on a warm October evening to talk about growing up in the suburbs of NYC, film school in Boston, booking and playing Brooklyn shows over the last decade, striving to create a community, and how to be okay with taking care of yourself. From King Pizza’s website: “King Pizza Records is support, community, and fun. We are not just a label, we are a collective. Resistance is futile. We are about creating a scene and building our community. Come hang out with us. We throw lots of parties and release lots of records and tapes.” King Pizza Records official site King Pizza on Bandcamp Instagram: Twitter: Facebook: Soundcloud: Youtube:
This week my guests are Ev Gold and Paul Claro, Brooklyn-born cousins who make up the heavy-experimental duo Cinema Cinema. We met up over the summer to talk about growing up in south Brooklyn, playing gigs in what’s known these days as “Old New York,” how formats have changed over the years, and, of course, their favorite music. Since their formation in 2008, Cinema Cinema have played nearly 500 live shows including half a dozen European tours and an opening slot for Black Flag’s 2014 North American tour. They’ve also released a handful of albums, including the latest, CCXMD, released Nov. 1st 2019 on Nefarious Industries. Cinema Cinema is currently on tour of the West Coast through November. Tour dates can be found at Cinema Cinema official site BUY CCXMD Instagram: Twitter: Facebook: REVIEWS: POPMatters: “Cinema Cinema show themselves as a brooding, multi-faceted monster that is relentless in its pursuit of musical mastery.” Sonic Abuse: “This very clearly is music of niche appeal, designed to flout convention and explore the outer limits of what can be achieved by an art-rock collective.” Selective Memory: “The chaos can be liberating as much as it can warp the senses…this recording either presents a snapshot of this specific moment of an artistic statement or ties them to a blueprint they have to take with them” Ev and Paul’s music picks: -King Gizzard “Infest The Rats Nest” -75 Dollar Bill “I Was Real” -TWRP “Return To Wherever” -Mark Lanegan Band “Somebody’s Knocking” -Neil Young & the Stray Gators “Tuscaloosa” -The Meters -The Highwaymen -Bruce Springsteen “Born To Run” -Bob Dylan “Like A Rolling Stone” -Pearl Jam “Ten” -Blink 182 “Take Off Your Pants and Jacket”
On the inaugural episode of Sounds Familiar my guest is Ann Courtney; singer/songwriter of NYC staple Mother Feather. Ann and I sat down back in July to talk about the ups and downs of being a creative performer, how NYC's music scene has changed in the last twenty years, what music's been turning us on and a lot more. Ann grew up the daughter of U.S. diplomats, spending her high school years in Pakistan and the Philippines before moving to New York in 1999. In 2010 she formed Mother Feather, eventually getting a label deal with Metal Blade Records which released the band's self-titled debut in 2015. The following year saw Mother Feather traveling with Warped Tour and in 2018 the band released their second album, Constellation Baby.
