Recently I saw a couple people share the same story from Reddit. At first I ignored it, but when I came across it the third time, I felt I should read it. The headline caught my attention. A story about regret from a 46 year old man. Why had it gone viral? I read it and what he said wasn’t anything that others have gone through. I  think it’s because his story is so relatable and he publicly shared it that it became viral. When reading his story, I just saw a life that so many people live. No matter at what age. Those who are similar to his age realize they have neglected what’s most important in life. They’ve lost their identity. Those who are younger can feel they are heading down this path and are scared. In today’s podcast, I share that story and offer my own advice so that you can avoid the same fate. My biggest enemy in my 20’s was trying to find my passion. I didn’t know it growing up. I didn’t know it in college so I chose a major that sounded fun and not that practical. After college, I began working in the family restaurant business just to have something to do and make money. Once I figured out my true passion, I’d pursue that. Years passed and it still didn’t come to me. I read books to learn how others found theirs. I did tests from books to find what I was passionate about. I came up with a bunch of interests but I wasn’t sure if I was truly passionate about any. After spending my adult life coming up with nothing, I needed another strategy. I stopped searching for my passion and just followed what I talk about in this podcast episode. Want me to answer your question on the podcast? Now you can leave me a voicemail. Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses. – George Washington Carver What excuses do you constantly tell yourself? I’m willing to bet some of them are mentioned in this podcast episode. When you have an excuse, what you are doing is immediately telling your brain to stop being unrealistic and go back to being realistic without even trying. The excuses you tell yourself have so much power over you, but when you get a closer look at the excuses, you realize they’re not that powerfull. They just act to scare you from getting out of your comfort zone and succeed the majority of the time. It’s time to stop letting excuses prevent you from living your dreams. He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.  – Benjamin Franklin After listening to today’s episode, I want you to stop saying these six excuses because they’re only made to hold you back. Isn’t it a good thing to tell people what our big hairy goals are? By telling them won’t they help keep us accountable? Be careful about doing that. There will be a lot of people, including family and close friends, who won’t agree with what you’re doing. It’s not like you’re breaking the law, but it’s almost gets the same response. They won’t understand why you would want to quit a nice and stable job. They won’t understand why you’re doing whatever it is you dream about doing. They try to dissuade you and they believe they’re doing it out of love. If enough people tell you the same thing, it could cause you to believe they are right. In this episode, I talk about why it’s so important to keep your goals and dreams to yourself. Flying in the A380 Suites This episode is about one of my favorite hobbies. It’s something I began to do when I started to get busy living. I went back and forth if I should do an episode about this because it’s different than the topics I’ve covered so far. However to me it fits under the get busy living theme. I’m sure many of you love to travel or would love to travel more. You want to travel like a millionaire without actually paying full price. I’m going to say before you decide to listen to this episode or not is if traveling isn’t for you, then this podcast won’t be helpful to you. I just want to be honest upfront because I know your time is valuable. If you don’t live in the United States, it’s going to be harder to take advantage of many of the offers I talk about. It doesn’t mean there aren’t travel deals in the country you live, but everything I talk about assumes that you live in the United States. I know i have listeners from all around the world and just want to be upfront because I value your time. If you’re still with me, then let’s get started to talk about traveling. Traveling is something that I wanted to do more of when I dreamt of the type of life I wanted to create. That’s why I wanted more freedom in life.  I wanted to travel. Traveling gets me excited. I love being at airports. I get excited the night before I know we’re going somewhere. However if I wanted to be able to travel more, I had to figure out a way to make it more affordable. That’s what led me to travel hacking starting in 2011. And it has allowed my wife and I to take trips we would never be able to afford. When we travel now, I look at our options for flights and hotels. Sometimes I’ll use the points and miles I’ve collected to lower the cost or make it free. Or if the price is right, I’ll just pay and save those points and miles. The points and miles have allowed us to take amazing trips, stay in nice hotels for half the cost. I hope by the end of the episode you get a great overview of the potential with travel hacking and how to get started. Some topics I cover: What is a mistake fare? How we stayed in a $550 per night hotel for only$164 per night What is travel hacking? How i got started with travel hacking My mistake when getting my first credit card How to get a two night stay valued at $2000+ for free Why changing your points into cash is a horrible idea How to quickly get elite status at hotels How to check in luggage for free Who should not be signing up for credit cards How to double the rewards you get When I keep paying the annual free and when I cancel An example of how my wife will fly domestically for free with me until the end of 2015 and more… Links for this episode: Ways to meet minimum spend  How to use Amazon payment Chase ultimate reward points overview How to get the Southwest Companion Pass Sign up for Uber – get $20 off first ride (my affiliate link) My epic travel hacking report (plus flying in the A380 suites) Airbnb.com (my affiliate link) Resource to get updates about travel deals: Boardingarea.com Flyertalk.com – the biggest message board online about travel Milepoint.com – another message board Flightdeal.com – lists cheap fares Sign up for the two credit cards I mention (both not affiliate links): Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card signup Hyatt Credit card My favorite travel blogs: One Mile At a Time Million Mile Secrets  To learn how to get started travel hacking: Travel Hacking Cartel run by Chris Guillebeau. In episode 101 I talked about the personal challenge I made to myself for the month of March to do ten pushups a day. I began this in order to get off my lazy butt and start doing something. In this episode I talk about my progress so far and also what good has come from it. Physically I feel a little bit stronger from only ten pushups a day, but more important changes have been happening. I found motivation to do more. I decided to challenge myself to start a new streak. It’s one that I have never done before. It will challenge me even more than doing ten pushups a day. Listen to this episode to hear what it is and how by starting something so simple has lead to doing something bigger. Join the free Get Busy Living group Are you on Facebook already? We’re heading into the final quarter of the year and it’s not time yet to start looking to next year to get started on what we want to do. There is still a lot of time left for us and it’s important to take a time to reflect back on this year first.  Have things not gone the way you expected? Do you feel like you haven’t made much progress this year? Are you saying the same things now that you were saying at the beginning of this year? I needed to ask those questions in order to find the answers I needed. I’ve begun to do things that I hadn’t done before in order to get different results. I share what I’ve been doing in this episode. Join the free Get Busy Living group Are you on Facebook already? If so, join the Get Busy living community there. Click here to join right now. Recently I’ve set out to challenge myself in new ways. If I want different results in my life, I need to do different things. One area of my life that needed a serious kick in the butt was with exercise. I focused on exercise because of my belief of the domino effect. I know what it’s like to consistently exercise, have more energy, and feel great about myself. When I feel great, that spreads to other areas of my life. I feel happier, more confident, more focused, and more optimistic. So for me I wanted to first focus on my health through exercising. For too long I haven’t exercised because of the common excuse that we have which is “I don’t have any enough time.” I got tired of using that an excuse and tired of continuously wanting to exercise. I followed the goal created by Runner’s World magazine of running one mile a day for 40 days straight. I’m proud to say that I achieved that goal. In this episode, I talk about the valuable lessons I learned from this experience. Join the free Get Busy Living group Are you on Facebook already? If so, join the Get Busy living community there. When we’re born we have no beliefs. That’s why when we’re young, we do a lot of things and act more confidently because we have no beliefs about them. Overtime we hear from teacher, parents, friends, relatives and society about what they believe to be true.  We have beliefs that we carry around with us every single day that came from as far back as being a child. Beliefs like money doesn’t grow on trees or you’ll be nothing if you don’t get good grades. We carry those beliefs as adults and we don’t realize that these believes have been holding us back.  It’s time to choose new beliefs in your life. It starts with this episode. I hope to get you to question your current beliefs so you can start to make new ones. Join the free Get Busy Living group Are you on Facebook already? If so, join the Get Busy living community there. It’s a new year and I’ve been reflecting on how I want 2019 to be for me. What I’ve decided is that I’m going to go bigger in 2019 and I know the way to do that is to challenge myself and get me out of my comfort zone. I want to look back at 2019 and be proud of what I achieved and have it be my best year yet. I hope you will join me this year so I can do what I can to help you. One area that I will spend more time on is on the Get Busy Living brand. For years now it’s just been an afterthought. It’s something that I have worked on whenever I had the time. When reflecting on what I wanted to focus on in 2019, the idea of writing and podcasting kept sticking in my mind. I couldn’t shake it. So I’ve decided that I’m going to spend the first quarter of 2019 on this and see where it takes me. I just know that I want to achieve much more this year. The past two years have been good, but I’ve gotten too comfortable and haven’t pursued any projects that I so badly want to do but am afraid to do. This year I’ll continuously make sure I’m pursuing what scares me because that’s the only way I know I’ll achieve more and grow as a person. When it comes to our jobs, it sometimes can be a tough decision choosing between something you love doing but odd and something that’s boring and normal. Recently I got a email from a member of the Get Busy Living community who was struggling between making a choice. She was in a job that she didn’t like, but it was a normal job in an office. To her family, that was a respectable job. In her heart though she had this other job she loved doing and would lose track of time when she did it. The job solved a problem that people are willing to pay for. However she was hesitant because her family thought she was crazy for wanting to do that job. So what that job and what happened? You will have to listen to this week’s episode to learn more.   Join the free Get Busy Living group Are you on Facebook already? If so, join the Get Busy living community there. Raise your hand if you struggle with focus and concentration? I know I definitely do. We live in a world where instant gratification is just a click away on our phone, tablets and computers. So we’re easily distracted all the time and our brain is searching for the next new bit of info. That’s one reason why we can’t focus when we need to. While writing those sentences above I went to my phone and checked something. I didn’t need to. It wasn’t urgent but it was just a natural bad habit. Now I’m going to focus on finishing the rest of this summary and push away all distractions till later. That’s one way to overcome it is to not be easily swayed by distractions that enter our mind. In this episode, I share what I’ve done to improve my focus and concentration recently. If you’ve been struggling and want to find help, then I hope my advice can get you to focus and concentrate better. Join the free Get Busy Living group Are you on Facebook already? Today I have another great question from Nancy, who is a long time listener. Her first question is a question we all have asked ourselves at one point in our lives, but I love how she added the word “within”. She understands that happiness starts with us first. It doesn’t come from buying stuff. I have a house full of stuff that I bought to try and make me happy and now I’d be happy to just get rid of it. We would love to make more money, find true love, and get a new job. We incorrectly think that if we can just do that then we’ll be happy. To truly succeed we have to find happiness within. I go into depth about how to do that. She also has a question about how to find her next career path and how she can stop feeling sorry for herself. Listen to today’s episode. It’ll get you to change how you view happiness. Click here to subscribe via RSS (non-iTunes feed)     Have you been enjoying the podcast? If so, please take just a few minutes to leave a 5* review. When was the last time you set goals? Have you ever tried to set goals only to see them fail? If you’re not seeing progress in your life, then I would strongly advise setting goals. I never set goals in life, except for the weak attempts at making New Year’s resolutions. In 2010, I needed to try a new strategy to change my life and I incorporated goal setting for the first time. A year later I had achieved more than I could have imagined. Setting goals isn’t just thinking about what you want to do and then that’s it. You will get easily distracted because other things will come into your life. You have no plan and no idea if you’re on the right track or not. Can you imagine driving to a new city and not see any roadsigns? Also you don’t have navigation to guide you. You would get really lost really quick. Not too long after starting, you’ll turn back around and go back the way you came. The same happens when you have tried to set goals in the past. After listening to this episode, you will have a better understanding of the right way to set goals that will be more likely to be achieved.   Click here to subscribe via RSS (non-iTunes feed)     If you enjoyed, I would really appreciate a review in iTunes!    paypal contact
I was looking through the episodes that I’ve done of the podcast and saw the title was from episode 18: One year after I quit my job and went all in. That was recorded in June 2014. I hadn’t realized the two year anniversary was this month. That was a major turning point in my life. I had a big decision to make. Do I continue working at my horrible job, just to have financial security and working in my free time to build  up enough online income? Or do I quit to be free and take a leap of faith? I decided for my own sanity it was time to quit. I didn’t dwell on whether it was the right decision. I didn’t worry about what if I couldn’t do it. t just focused on how I was going to make money. Since that turning point in my life, I’ve had many ups but also some downs. That’s the life of an entrepreneur. Many people couldn’t handle it and therefore would rather settle for the comfort of a steady paycheck. Despite being on a roller coaster ride, I wouldn’t change a thing. I make more money now and I’m happier. In this episode, I talk about the lessons I’ve learned these past two years to help you if you wanted to be your own boss or even help you achieve your dreams. There’s not amount of books you can read, podcasts you can listen to, praying and hoping to change your life without one very important ingredient. That’s taking action. I’m not talking about doing a little bit. I’m taking about taking massive action. The type that goes on for days, weeks, months, and even years. No one in life that has their dream life has achieved it without taking massive action. It’s true! Ask anyone and they can tell you what they had to do. Too many people wish for a better life, but are so afraid to not only take action, but to take that first step. They’re fear failure. They hope for the easy way out They hope it’s painless. It won’t be and it will never be. I used to be THAT guy. The one that feared failing again. The one that wanted the perfect outcome with very little work. Too me too many years to finally wise up, but I finally did. Join me on today’s podcast as I talk about the importance of taking action. Finding motivation to consistently take action with ease would be a dream come true right? I’d love to be motivated every day, but I’m not. I’m human so there are day where I don’t want to do much but watch TV with my iPad on my lap. It’s even harder to find the motivation to do anything when we’re tired from a long day at work. We aren’t happy in life. We wish for change, but with zero motivation, it’s hard to make any changes. But there is a way to make changes and to get yourself to take action, and it does not rely on motivation. Relying solely on motivation to take action is a horrible strategy. First of all motivation is a feeling. Just like all our feelings they come and go. When we feel motivated, it’s a great feeling. We feel like we can do anything and we get started with laser focus. But a week or two later, we don’t have that motivation anymore. The feeling of excitement is gone. That’s why new year’s resolutions end so quickly. That intial motivation is there and we have good intentions to stick with it, but up till that point we’ve been only relying on motivation to get us to do what we need to do. It’s like anything we decide we’re going to do. We start off excited about it, but quickly lose interest and completely stop. In this epsiode, I talk about how I found the motvation to make changes in my life despite feeling stuck, working at a job I dreaded, and having no idea what I else I wanted to do in my life. I’m currently in Taipei, Taiwan for our annual trip back here. My wife is from here. We met here when I lived here for a short time. Being here always brings back great memories from 2007-2008. It was nine years ago this month that I made a decision to move here. I was at a point in my life where I needed to get away from my job and my problems. I thought by going as far away as possible that I’d figure out what I wanted to do with my life. After two years of living here, I didn’t figure out what to do with my life, but life changed dramatically for me. I experienced so many pivotal moments because I stepped out of my comfort zone. I didn’t just take a tiny step out of my comfort zone. In some instances, I took a huge leap. I did things I thought I would hate but ended up really enjoying it. In today’s episode, I share what those moments and how each one was a step towards changing my life for the better.     Join the free Get Busy Living group Are you on Facebook already? There are a lot of excuses that hold us back. One of them is “I don’t know how.” I get this a lot in emails sent to me. Someone wants to change their life or start a business but the one thing that is holding them back is “I don’t know how.” Two years ago, I didn’t know how to sell t-shirts online. I didn’t know how to run Facebook ads. That didn’t stop me from wanting to learn how. So I bought an online course. I used free resources available to be like articles, Youtube videos. and Facebook groups to learn how. More importantly, I was putting into action what I was learning. Now people come to me asking for help with the very thing I didn’t know how to do two years ago. Because of the resources we have available, we can become an expert at anything that doesn’t require physical talent. I’m not going to become a professional soccer play by watching Youtube videos, but that’s not what I’m trying to do. So in today’s episode, I talk about ways you can become an expert at anything and hopefully if that is one of your limiting beliefs, you won’t let it hold you back anymore. The month of February was a busy one for me. Three out of the four weeks in the month I was traveling somewhere. I love traveling and it’s one of the reasons I wanted freedom from a 9-5. But when it comes to getting work done, I have a really tough time doing it while traveling. One reason is that I like to go out in the city I’m in. We were in Los Angeles and Las Vegas early in the month. Those are great cities with lots to do. So the only time I had to do any work was in the morning before leaving and at night before bed. The same when I was in New York City the last week of the month. Because my time when I could work was so limited in February, I had to choose what I wanted to do. I knew I could not get everything I wanted done. I had to figure out what my #1 priority was. It wasn’t a hard choice. My business was my #1 priority. Everything else that I needed to get done could wait. That means now my inbox is way out of control. I just didn’t have the time to sit and reply to all the emails. That valuable time was used instead on my business. And that decision paid off because I had a five figure month selling t-shirts in February. If I didn’t devote the time, I probably would have just done a few thousand. I know you’re busy too, but I know also you do get free time during the day. It might not be much, but you do have time to yourself. What are you going to do during that time? Watch TV? Get on Facebook? Work on your side hustle? Exercise? Read? You have to figure out what is important to you so that you can make it a top priority. So when you do have free time, you’re not trying to figure out what you should do.   Join the free Get Busy Living group Are you on Facebook already? If so, join the Get Busy living community there. It’s always easy to see someone who is making money and doing well and think they must be lucky or that it came so easy. I’m very thankful that all the years of trying and failing have finally paid off. I’m living my dreams. It hasn’t been easy to get to this point though. In fact, I think I have taken longer than most people who are making money online. It does seem some do well on their first attempt. It’s very possible, but I think that’s not the norm. I wish it were that easy for me. My first attempt didn’t go that well. Nor did the next or the following attempts. In fact it took many years and many embarrassing ways that I tried to make money online. The reason I want to talk about it in today’s episode is because I know many of you have this fear of trying. I’m telling you to start now. Because your first attempt may not be successful. It’ll probably be embarrassing when you look back on it, but with each try you move slightly closer and closer. I know that’s what helped me. At the time it felt like I was going backwards or making no progress but it all led me to where I am today.   Click here to subscribe via RSS (non-iTunes feed)     If you enjoyed, I would really appreciate a review in iTunes!
Living in the past is never a good thing. I’m a believe that we have to let go of the past in order to move forward. However I am a believer at taking the time to reflect on the past 12 months. It’s like going to the dentist or the doctor’s for a regular check up, but less painful. By reflecting on the past 12 months, it lets us take time to assess what we have done. What did we do well? What did we do poorly? What do we need to do more of? What do we need to do less of? These questions and more can help us make sure that we’re on the right track for the next 12 months. We don’t want to be a dog chasing our tail and end up in the same situation, as the same person, and wasted a whole year. That’s why before we get too far along in 2015, it’s best to take time to do a year in review. When you take action, you trigger all kinds of things that will inevitably carry you to success. You let people know you mean business and you’re not just all talk. People start to respect you because you are taking action. People with similar goals come into your life. The people who are successful and are happy in life is because they take action. They simply do what unsuccessful people aren’t willing to do. Once they develop a plan, they start. They learn as they go. Even if they don’t start off perfectly, they learn from their mistakes, make the necessary corrections and keep taking action. they’re building momentum like a train until they produce the result they set out to get or something even better happened. To be successful, you have to do what successful people do, and successful people are highly action oriented. When you listen to an episode of my podcast, I want you to take something from it and put it into action. Without action, nothing will change for you.
