Get Up Nation® Podcast Episode 79 Guest: Dr. John Eric Baugher, www.johnericbaugher.com
Get Up Nation®! My name is Ben Biddick, the Creator and Host of the Get Up Nation® Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Dr. John Eric Baugher, the author of Contemplative Caregiving: Finding Healing, Compassion, and Spiritual Growth Through End-of-Life Care. John has been a contemplative educator, social science researcher, and end-of-life caregiver for more than two decades. Dr. Baugher consults and offers workshops internationally on spiritual care, grief, and transformation, and contemplative learning. John’s website is www.johnericbaugher.com. There you will see 2 quotes. One from Thupten Jinpa, the Principal Translator of the Dalai Lama that reads “Our families, hospitals, prisons, and whole society can benefit from the vision of compassion offered by John Baugher.” The second quote reads “Baugher pioneers for us the very outer frontiers of human empathy” from Arlie Hochschild, a finalist for the National Book Award. Dr. Baugher’s mission is to “support those who suffer and those who care with teachings on the practice of compassionate caregiving. His vision is to create “a world where compassion for all is the foundation of human culture and social systems.” I feel very honored to be speaking with John today and to learn his insights and perspective on how we as individuals, organizations, and societies can develop and sustain resilience as we are confronted with the reality of death and seek to ease suffering during our experience of life. What up, Get Up Nation? Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 36 Guest: Marsha Elle, www.marshaellemusic.com
What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Marsha Elle. Marsha is a gifted singer-songwriter, speaker, mentor, and model. She was born with a rare birth defect called proximal femoral focal deficiency resulting in the amputation of Marsha’s lower leg. Born in Haiti, she traveled to the United States to receive medical care and received her first prosthesis when she was 5 years old. In response to stares and bullying, she often disguised the prosthesis and didn’t wear shorts until she was 23 years old. Adjustments in her prosthetic during childhood made mobility difficult at times, leading to falls in the school cafeteria. Music became her “release and comfort.” She also attended a summer camp at the age of 16 for teenage amputees. This experience transformed the way she saw her ability and potential. She began to share her music and her journey with others. She defied the idea that there was no room for her in a body-image focused world, removed from her mind defeating perceptions and limits, and now serves as a beacon of light and faith for those who have difficulty with self-acceptance. I can’t wait to explore and share how Marsha transitioned from adversity to what she describes as a “series of triumphs on top of triumphs over time.” From People Magazine to Essence Magazine to the Huffington Post to Jada Pinkett Smith, people are heralding Marsha as an inspiring example of the beauty that happens when we believe in ourselves and refuse to be limited. It was an honor to have Marsha as a guest on the Get Up Nation Podcast! She even shares something during this episode that no one knows about her legendary photo shoot! Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with United States Air Force Veteran Colonel Don Taylor. He is the author of a book called "The Quiet Heroes: Timeless Reflections of an American Airman." The book highlights the experiences of World War II veteran Technical Sergeant Erwin "Itch" Harrison of the United States Army Air Corps. We discuss the book and how the process of writing it caused Don to draw from his experiences serving in Iraq as the Commander of a military hospital to gain valuable insights into honoring Itch’s challenges and service. If you’re interested in gaining a greater understanding of how servant leadership can transform one of the most terrifying and traumatic environments on earth into a place of health, empowerment, resilience, and cohesion by making peace with your own mortality and voluntarily risking one’s own life in the service of the broken, welcome to Get Up Nation Episode 24. Nowhere is resilience more valuable and important than when human beings decide to enter the jaws of modern warfare to heal and serve. Don shares how he honored the sacrifices and challenges of those who volunteered to go, recognized and communicated the supreme privilege of their duty to save and heal in a war zone, and sustained his staff’s mental health as they faced the tremendous challenge of caring for those who suffered the most vicious trauma the world has to offer. He also reflects on those who survived prior wars and conflicts and how the need to better serve them creates his calling to tirelessly help these heroes every day of his life. Since then, Dena committed herself to creating a world of mental health fluency, compassion, and empowerment for those who are overcoming the challenges associated with traumatic stress. Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 20 Guest: Judy Hoberman, TedxSpeaker, Author, Trainer, Coach
What up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball Player and CEO of www.lurongliving.com, Adam Greenberg. Today, I have the honor and privilege of speaking with Judy Hoberman. Judy is a true example of a person whose resilience, perseverance, and commitment to valuing her whole self allowed her to conquer massive barriers to success. At the age of 17, her own father told her that “all she was was pretty, and she would never amount to anything else.” She repeatedly refused to allow her intelligence to be suppressed and pursued her passion for business. Early in her career she was employed by a roofing company. She was told to be the face of company and not to speak in order to be successful. If she would’ve obeyed these voices, the world would never have benefited from the brilliance of her many books including “Selling in a Skirt,” “Famous Isn’t Enough,” “Pure Wealth,” and most recently “Walking on the Glass Floor: Seven Essential Qualities of Women Who Lead.” These business books for sales executives and entrepreneurs have been featured on Fox News Radio, CNN Headlines, ABC, CBS, and Good Morning Texas. If she would’ve allowed these stifling voices to silence her own, the world would never have heard her TED Talk called “The Greatest Missed Opportunity” or listened to her radio show called “Selling in a Skirt” which airs on Mondays at 12pm Central on the Women for Women Radio Network. Her commitment to valuing herself and the entirety of her potential has led to the world valuing intensely her skills, knowledge, and insights. A gender expert, Judy is quoted as saying, “Women want to be treated equally, not identically.” She daily creates a world where people value people and intentionally transcend limiting and inaccurate assumptions about one another. Her perseverance and excellence has earned one of the most vital and important attributes any of us can possess, the respect of others. Renee has one of the most inspiring Instagram accounts I’ve ever seen as she chronicles her journey through her cancer treatment. I was honored to have her as the third guest of the Get Up Nation Podcast. Check out her episode today and wish her well via @resilient.renee on Instagram. I also recently spoke with Evan Williamson, the creator of www.soberlifeapparel.com based in Texas. Evan created this clothing company to empower and support those battling addiction as they strive to create a new reality in recovery. He shared how his own battle with addiction was the catalyst that led him to serve others battling addiction. After speaking with Evan, I contacted Cory Divine, a Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor and Licensed Professional Counselor at www.connectionscounseling.com in Madison, Wisconsin. He shared insights with me on the challenges people face as they attempt to transition from addiction into sobriety and recovery. He describes how the staff at Connections Counseling help people achieve a lasting liberation from addiction through a unique mentorship program that provides guidance and support during the transition. www.soberlifeapparel.com www.connectionscounseling.com www.getupnationpodcast.com Music: Awaken by Ethan Rank and Dawn by C3NC Music You Tube: bit.ly/2CzePma Facebook: @getupnationpodcast itunes: apple.co/2xZPeih Instagram: @getupnationpodcast Twitter: @getupnationpod Soundcloud: bit.ly/2gNLtXk Stitcher: bit.ly/2yzoklu Overcast: bit.ly/2zry0LS Spreaker: bit.ly/2l4pmR3 Acast: bit.ly/2z1P6AM --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/get-up-nation-podcast/support

Guest: Josh Wege, Combat Veteran, Member of www.woundedwarrioramputeesoftballteam.org What up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with Adam Greenberg, Major League Baseball Player and CEO of www.lurongliving.com. Welcome to Episode 16 of the podcast. I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Josh Wege. He’s a Marine Corps Veteran of the Global War on Terror and is currently a member of the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team. Josh lost both of his legs in Afghanistan to an improved explosive device that detonated under his vehicle. He refused to let the loss of his legs stop him from serving others and currently empowers young amputees to be confident and unashamed of who they are. I caught up with him just before he left on a snowboarding trip and had the honor of hearing his story which I share with all of you here. It’s worth the listen especially if you need to hear about good people doing amazing things for others. www.woundedwarrioramputeesoftballteam.org www.getupnationpodcast.com Music: Arc by Josh Leake and Awaken by Ethan Rank You Tube: bit.ly/2CzePma Facebook: @getupnationpodcast itunes: apple.co/2xZPeih Instagram: bit.ly/2yB8mam Twitter: @getupnationpod Soundcloud: bit.ly/2gNLtXk Stitcher: bit.ly/2yzoklu Overcast: bit.ly/2zry0LS Spreaker: bit.ly/2l4pmR3 Acast: bit.ly/2z1P6AM Buy the book: amzn.to/2rt2lWN --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/get-up-nation-podcast/support

Get Up Nation® Podcast Episode 67 Guest: Anoop Bhatia, CEO of www.nowigence.com
Get Up Nation®! My name is Ben Biddick, the Creator and Host of the Get Up Nation® and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Anoop Bhatia, the Founder and CEO of Nowigence, an artificial intelligence platform delivering the personalized sales intelligence you need to close deals faster. Prior to founding Nowigence, Anoop studied in India and Scotland then worked for over two decades in various companies across the globe including India, The Netherlands, Germany, and the United States. Anoop played a key role in establishing GE Silicones Private Limited as the first-ever wholly owned foreign subsidiary that was ever established on Indian soil in 1996. He possesses a wealth of experience in global business operations, mergers and acquisitions, finance, sales and marketing, and complex negotiations. When he started his career in the mid-80’s, the pace of business was slower, and there weren’t digital tools like web or team collaboration platforms. There wasn’t the ability to record and transcribe conversations and discussions. Now, there is so much data available it can be difficult to manage. Nowigence utilizes artificial intelligence to bridge this gap, enriching organizations’ market intelligence in real time, continuously grooming leads, strengthening relationships with clients, and setting future targets with confidence. Anoop, thank you for taking time to join me on Get Up Nation®! Get Up Nation® Podcast Episode 74 Guest: Brandon Winfield, https://www.iaccess.life/
Get Up Nation®! My name is Ben Biddick, the Creator and Host of the Get Up Nation® Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Brandon Winfield, the Founder and CEO of iaccess.life. I’m so impressed with Brandon who suffered an injury during a motocross accident at the age of 14 that left him paralyzed from the waist down. A powerful example of resilience, Brandon saw this injury as a mere setback. He committed himself to finding the opportunity within the tragedy and noticed that while he traveled, most places he visited were up to Americans with Disabilities Act code, but there were many areas grandfathered in and never forced to retrofit to accommodate the mobility impaired. Brandon recognized the opportunity of creating an app that would allow people with mobility impairments to rate and review the ease of accessibility and post photos of venues like restaurants, clubs, and bars. Creating this community of people with similar experiences would be something that could help others prepare for types of inconveniences others may face if visiting. This information creates the ability for mobility impaired people to navigate a stress free, relaxing night with friends and loved ones. Not only that but it helps others be more aware of the challenges mobility impaired people face and plan events and celebrations in places that are accommodating for all. What Up, Get Up Nation®? My name is Ben Biddick, the Creator and Host of the Get Up Nation® Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with WNBA star Renee Montgomery. She currently plays starting Point Guard for the Atlanta Dream, is a 2-time WNBA Champion, was the WNBA’s Sixth Woman of the Year in 2012, was a member of the WNBA All-Rookie Team in 2009, and an Eastern Conference All-Star in 2011. A graduate of the University of Connecticut, she honed her craft under the guidance of legendary Coach Auriemma. Renee led Connecticut to 138 wins and only 11 losses in her 4 year career at UCONN. She helped take UCONN to the NCAA Women’s Final Four twice, to four NCAA regionals, and 4 Big East regular season titles. She started 147 times, 139 of those were consecutive, the most by any player in UCONN program history as well as the most nationally. When she left Connecticut and launched her WNBA career, she was the only player in program history to rank in the top 10 in points, assists, steals, and three pointers. During her Senior year at UCONN, she led the team to a 39 and 0 record--one of only 5 perfect seasons in NCAA history--winning the National Championship. She was selected by the Minnesota Lynx in the first round and was the fourth overall pick in the 2009 WNBA draft. She’s won numerous awards including 2009’s Nancy Lieberman Award and 2009’s Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award in addition to her achievements on college and professional courts. Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 58 Guest: Ultra Runner And Veteran Jordan Theurer
What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Jordan Theurer. I had the honor of being connected with Jordan by Marc Holley who owns Atlas Defense. Marc is an amazing person who stepped up when I wanted to help Renee Parks and her husband celebrate completing chemotherapy. Check out Renee’s amazing journey on Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 3 and check out Marc Holley’s Atlas Defense at the link below where he coaches his clients in personal security to develop confidence through competence. He served in the Marine Corps and lives to impact veteran mental health. Which brings me to Jordan. Jordan is the first Get Up Grant Winner of 2019. Get Up Nation provided him with $50 to get some gear he needed for a race he only had 4 days to prepare for. When we get into this episode you will understand why I believe Jordan is deserving of our support. He is doing amazing things and overcoming tremendous adversity. He is an Ultra Runner who just completed the St Croix Winter Ultra 40 mile race in Hinckley, Minnesota, on January 12, 2019. He pulled a sled in the middle of the woods at night for 40 miles on 4 days notice! Initially he thought he earned twentieth place but found out afterward he placed fourteenth by finishing the race in 11 hours, 27 minutes, and 14 seconds! Jordan is a United States Army Veteran and a survivor of alcoholism. In the darkest times of his addiction he discovered the book Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall. It was the spark Jordan needed to begin his journey toward sobriety and health. Some ridiculed him when he first articulated he was going to be an Ultra Runner in the throes of addiction, but here he is now making his dream a reality. Get Up Nation Holiday Sitrep
I just wanted to send out a special situation report to all members of Get Up Nation in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve. This message is for all of you who are out there right now, doing what you gotta do. When so many are tucked in their warm beds, well fed, dreaming in the bliss of security, there are so many of you out there, creating it. Whether you’re a cop who just talked someone out of suicide or just untangled some family members tearing each other to shreds immersed in substances and alcohol and holiday stress or whether you just bore the barrage of someone who’s lost all semblance control and cursed and spat and fought with you while you remained professional with supreme empathy and restraint, Whether you’re a nurse working the night shift, stomaching the tragedies that barrel through the ER doors while you slug down coffee, hoping you get home in time to see the kids open their presents. May the vicarious trauma you endure lend sweetness to the moments with your families as you know how bad things can be, and know also how good things can be as a result of staring life and death square in the eyes shift after shift and shift, Whether you’re a paramedic or EMT doing your best to revive and console, storming chaos to save life, Whether you are in the mental health field, and steel yourself with self-care in anticipation of the investments you will make in others during the holidays, so that in holidays to come the Crisis of this one will prevent them from deploying permanent solutions to temporary problems, Whether you’re going to be working all night on your start up because it’s your passion and the greatest holiday gift you experience is bringing your idea into reality, Whether you are in a hospital bed or on your own bed at home, suffering from injury or disease, Whether you are the loved one of a person who has served in the military or a member of a Gold Star family whose every holiday is accompanied by the memory of a fallen loved one, Whether you are a member of the all volunteer United States Armed Services shivering through the night, in a place no one even knows about, in a place no one even knows America is, Thank you, we honor you. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/get-up-nation-podcast/support
