Falling Short Of Number One – EP115
No one likes falling short of number one. “If you ain’t first, you’re last” is a Ricky Bobby quote that will live forever.  We aren’t sure that this quote is accurate for the music business. The Billboard 100 has a 99 other places you can be and you’re just fine.  On this episode, we celebrate the 80s and look at some of the guitar driven rock hits during the decade. Being #1 is important in life.  It defines you as a winner. Although, there were rock/hard rock bands that reached #1 on the Billboard 100 in the 80s, many were ballads.  On this episode, we explore all the 80s songs (that we consider guitar driven rock, which at times is not easy to disseminate), that charted on the Hot 100 but failed to reach #1…..and as you probably guessed, our opinions vary on several of the choices.  So, bring on your inner “Poindexter” and enjoy this stat ridden episode. Crank It Up – Have You Heard ? Volume 2 – EP114
In this edition of "Have You Heard", we try and turn up the volume on some killer rock that you may or may not have heard of yet. I also catch up with Canadian rockers Striker. I met up with Striker vocalist Dan Cleary as the band rolled into town on their current US tour. Dan and I talk about everything from the benefits of being a Canadian band to the current struggles of breaking a band and the latest album release "Play To Win". Striker is a Canadian heavy metal band from Edmonton formed in 2007. The band's early material had a sound influenced more by old school thrash metal, but their more recent material has a more melodic sound influenced by traditional heavy metal.  Chris Segger- guitar (2007-2014, 2017–present) Dan Cleary- vocals (2007–present) Adam Brown- drums (2010–present) Tim Brown- guitar (2013–present) Pete Klassen- bass (2019–present) Buy and Support Music From The Artist We Discuss On This Episode Growin’ Up Rock Amazon Store Striker Website Music in this Episode Provided by the Following: Kobra & The Lotus, Lowrider, Wraith, & Striker To Contact us just click this link: @growinuprock.com WE NEED YOUR HELP!! Hollywood’s Wild Hair Volume 3 – EP111
Episode Description: Hollywood's Wild Hair has become a staple of the podcast. It gives Sonny the opportunity to play a bunch of music, and tell a few stories while flying solo or entertaining a special guest. It basically lets Hollywood be a radio DJ and feel free to play and do whatever he wants. In this volume 3 installment of Hollywood's Wild Hair, Sonny plays killers tracks from Viana, Y & T, Mr. Big, Dokken, Slik Toxik, Ozzy, Steve Stevens, Iron Maiden, Tangier, and Klassik, '78 What’s The Story: Our man Sonny "Hollywooooooooooooooood" Pooni is a free spirit. He likes to share some of his crazy adventures and play some ballads, along with other great rocking tracks in his Wild Hair episodes. Ron Young Of Little Caesar – EP110
Episode Description: Ron Young and Little Caesar were in a "can't miss" situation in the late 80s. With a major record deal on Geffen, a mammoth manager, and A&R guy, along with the biggest producer in rock, all in the bands corner. No way this will miss..... right? The following interview with lead singer Ron Young from Little Caesar is nothing short of crazy. It should stand as a cautionary tale of "There's no such thing as a sure thing in the record business." Even if your not a fan of Little Caesar or not that familiar with Ron Young, you will enjoy this candid conversation about touring with Kiss, making music, and the music business in general. What’s The Story: Nobody quite knew what to think of these long haired, tattooed bikers singing such soulful, yet ballsy, rock music when they arrived on the scene in Los Angeles in 1987. They stood out amongst the "Hair Bands" that populated the music scene at the time…..a distinction the band wore as a badge of honor. Much hype surrounded the band as they were managed by music legend Jimmy Iovine, guided by legendary A&R man John Kalodner and produced by Bob Rock. It seemed like a formula for success, yet the band met an unfortunate set of circumstances that left many scratching their heads shortly after the release of their self-titled debut album. The bands lead singer Ron Young shares all the trials and tribulations of their interrupted trip to super-stardom. Jetboy Guitarist Billy Rowe – EP108
Episode Description: Steven Interviews JETBOY guitarist Billy Rowe. We discuss the bands history, Rock and Roll Relic Guitars, and the newest album “Born To Fly”. What’s The Story: Founded in 1983 by guitarists Billy Rowe and Fernie Rod, JETBOY continues to carry their style of Rock N’ Roll into the 21st century with the same fury that existed 34 years ago. Long recognized as one of the perfecter of the glam genre, JETBOY was one of a handful of acts that got the attention of music fans and record executives alike. While Hollywood was loaded with musical talent, San Francisco had but one true leader at the time, and that leader was JETBOY. Now a cross-generational powerhouse, JETBOY is experiencing a resurgence in popularity that can only be attributed to their musical relevance. Rock N’ Roll fans the world over are beginning to revisit the music that helped to shape a generation, and is now becoming the soundtrack for their offspring. Songs like Feel the Shake, Heavy Chevy, Stomp it (Down to the Bricks), and their up rocked up version of Folsom Prison Blues have struck a chord with an increasingly more discerning audience. Celebrating their 25th anniversary In 2008, the founding members of JETBOY (Billy Rowe, Fernie Rod and Mickey Finn) are dedicated to bringing the party atmosphere back to Rock N’ Roll. In June 2017 the band signed a deal with Italian based label Frontiers Records. The band will record a full length album for the first time in over 20 years, Release date scheduled for 2018.  - Bio From Jetboy Rocks Website Everyone’s got a Rock N Roll story to tell, so tell us yours @growinuprock.comLike us and leave us a Review on our Face Book page - @growinuprock or Podchaser Follow us on Twitter - @growinuprock because let’s face it I need all the friends I can get!! 15 Songs We Can’t Live Without – EP107
Episode Description: We cover 15 songs we just can’t live without. If all music was wiped out forever, what 15 songs would you save? Sonny and I like a lot of different music. If we only had 15 songs to save, we think it should be a variety. What’s The Story: Often times a listener will come to us with feedback on past episodes and even an idea for a future episode. This episode is a perfect example of that. Listener Tony Smith came to us with an idea, we thought we could even turn into a series. This episode is a little off the beaten path from our normal episodes, but we think our listeners have broad rock n roll taste. Let us know if you dig it or hate it. Freedom Fest Weekend – BONUS
Episode Description:In this episode fellow podcaster Loose Cannon from the Cobras & Fire Podcast and I discuss the Freedom Fest Weekend getaway to Denver. Loose was considerably late to both events and inappropriately offers to grease my wife’s wrist up in order to obtain free admission into the fairgrounds for Freedom Fest. All of this plus Gary Cherone from Extreme, giving the crowd “The Cherone” wave leads to some pretty funny and interesting discussions. What’s The Story:I ran off to Denver with my wife for the week to hike and take in two concerts over the weekend. On Friday night we went to the Gothic Theater to see The Struts and opener The Glorious Sons. Then on Saturday, we finished off the weekend of concerts with an all day festival at a fairground in Golden, Colorado that featured Vixen, Steelheart, Great White, Extreme, and Queensryche. I phoned up friend and fellow Podcaster Loose Cannon from the Cobras and Fire Podcast to hang out and catch all the rock in roll. We did just that and had a great time. Diamonds Are A Band’s Best Friend – EP105
Episode Description: Gold albums are great, but diamonds are a band's best friend. In this episode, we are covering all the Diamond Certified rock albums. Sonny and I talk about the albums we own and the ones we don't, and we share our thoughts and feelings on some of the artist. We even play some guitar-driven rock that might be out of the norm for our show, but we promise you'll enjoy it. What's The Story? Once upon a time bands sold millions of records worldwide, and for a select few, their albums reached Diamond Status, meaning the album sold at least 10 million copies. This is a crazy statistic! In the world of rock n roll, diamond-certified albums are few and far between. Especially considering how greatly the music landscape has changed in the past 10 years. Multi-platinum albums have given way to streaming services and singles downloads. Rock bands and the great albums they made are unfortunately seen as a thing of the past. Not all diamond certified rock albums would be considered hard rock, but all of the albums we discuss can no doubt be considered rock n roll records. We get a chance to play some guitar-driven tracks from albums we love that don't always get fair play on our show, but make no mistake about it, were part of this rock n roll path we travel. Who’s Playing This Club Tonight? – EP104
Episode Description: Who's playing this club tonight? Let's find out as we decide to plan the ultimate club concert consisting of bands from the 70s , 80s, 90s, 2000s, and more recently from the last few years. Sounds easy? Not so fast, we have a few ground rules to lay down. Warning this episode is full of great music and a whole bunch of crazy laughs, so kick back and turn it up. What’s The Story: Over the years Sonny and I have gone to tons of concerts in all kinds of venues. Arenas, Amphitheaters, Stadiums, Domes, Theaters and Clubs. That being said, we missed many along the way. It's always fun to see a band in a club that should be playing in an arena. This has happened to both of us a few times over the years and it creates a memorable experience. We this we can put together two amazing club concerts from people we have missed along the way, and in the process give people a most memorable experience. Make sure after you check out our episode you share with us some of your club concert experiences and who you would love to catch on our club gig, using our rules. Whitesnake’s Joel Hoekstra Returns – EP103
Episode Description: Whitesnake's guitarist Joel Hoekstra returns to the show to discuss the new Whitesnake album Flesh & Blood. We also find out if Joel has been practicing his jump shot lately to prepare for the upcoming MORC basketball game in February. What’s The Story: In May Whitesnake released it's first album of original material since 2011's Forevermore. The new "Flesh And Blood" record marks the first Whitesnake album of original material to feature guitarist Joel Hoekstra. Joel first appeared with Whitesnake on The Purple Album in 2015, which was an album re-recording some of the classic Deep Purple material. Joel is a hard working in demand guitarist that splits his time with Whitesnake, Cher, and Trans Siberian Orchestra. When he's not playing guitar he loves to practice his jump shot on the courts. We were happy to catch back up with Joel as he shared the full story on the new Flesh And Blood record which we think is awesome. Hollywood’s Wild Hair – Volume 2 – EP102
Episode Description: Hollywood's Wild Hair Volume 2 goes from doing a solo episode to being joined by long time friend Tony Musallam of the band Restrayned.  The idea is to reminiscence a bit, share some stories of yesteryear, play some killer music and basically make you laugh a little. What's The Story ? : Although the original Wild Hair idea was to do solo episodes, there is something about a close friend joining you that just creates magic. Hollywood and Tony have a blast just being two dudes hanging out sharing stories of Growin' Up Rock while playing some songs from Ratt, Winger, Lynch Mob, Saints and Sinners, Restrayned, Bullet For My Valentine, Battle Beast, Black Label Society, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Stories of murder, drunken women, and crazy concert experiences will make you laugh and probably cry tears of stupidity. Back 2 Back Album Awesomeness – EP101
Episode Description: We celebrate back 2 back album release awesomeness. In addition I give my review of the recent Dio Hologram concert. What’s The Story: People in the music business have been using the term “sophomore jinx” for years to describe bands that had all their lives to write an amazing debut album, only to follow it up with a heaping pile of crap. In this episode we celebrate a few of our favorite bands that released 2 albums back 2 back that were killer from start to finish. This does not need to be the first 2 albums in a bands catalog, but merely 2 albums that were released back 2 back in the band's career. In addition to all of that great rock n roll, I give the details of the Dio hologram concert I recently attended. Was Dio eaten by a dragon on stage? Does he appear in the latest Game Of Thrones? Does he greet you at the door of the concert venue? Find out all the answers, as I cover it in detail. Dave Meniketti Of Y & T – EP100
Episode Description: It's our 100th episode and we are celebrating in a big way. We are honored to have on the show with us, Y & T founding member Dave Meniketti. We figured in Dave's 45 year career, there hasn't been a question he hasn't answered, so our man Hollywood came up with the idea of giving Dave the option to pick 3 albums from different eras of Y & T's career to discuss. Dave picks an awesome 3 pack of albums and shares some great stories with us about the band and the recording of each of the albums. What's The Story ?: I am a huge Y & T fan and have been since the mid 80s. My fandom pales in comparison to Sonny "Hollywood" Pooni. Sonny has seen the band 49 times as of this recording. According to him, if you grew up a rock fan in the Bay Area of California, you have a responsibility of being a Y & T fan. So it goes without saying when we needed a very special guest for our 100th episode, we looked no farther than Sonny's fellow California brother, and the leader of one of Sonny's top 5 bands, Y & T's Dave Meniketti. This band has meant so much to Sonny over his Growin' Up Rock years that I wanted to share the intro to this episode in his own words. "Growin’ up in Northern California, Y&T is a major part of my Growin’ Up Rock story. To this day, it drives me absolutely nuts when a “rock” fan doesn’t know who Y&T is…especially if they are from California. Even though they have been rockin’ the world for 45 years, the passion and work ethic has never wavered. We are so honored to have with us, the absolute hero of my teenage years, the underrated vocalist and guitarist of Y&T and one of the hardest working guys in rock, Mr. Dave Meniketti." Sit back and enjoy as we take a trip with Dave through 3 very different periods in the band's career covering three killer albums. Judas Priest Top 10 – EP099
Episode Description: Judas Priest top 10 songs, is what this episode is all about. Sonny and I get into why we love Judas Priest and play some of our favorites. I also review the Judas Priest concert I recently attended here in my town. What’s The Story: Judas Priest is easily one of my top 10 favorite bands of all time. They were in my earliest discoveries as I started to form my obsession with hard rock and heavy metal. I got into British Steel and Screaming For Vengeance almost at the same exact time in high school. I saw them 2 hours outside my hometown on the World Vengeance tour in February of ‘83. It was my 2nd big concert I attended. The Australian band Heaven opened up and I was right on the barrier for the whole thing. After seeing the recent Firepower Tour hit my town it seemed like a great time to reminisce and talk about some of our favorite Judas Priest tunes. Crank It Up! Brian Tatler Of Diamond Head – Bonus
Episode Description: Steven speaks with founding guitarist Brian Tatler of the band Diamond Head about the bands history and the recording of their upcoming album . On May 24th Diamond Head will release their 8th studio album "The Coffin Train". What’s The Story: I first got into Diamond Head after hearing "Am I Evil" on the B-Side of a Metallica picture disc and I was hooked. I went out and picked up everything I could. If they were good enough to get into Kerrang, and be part of the NWOBHM sound then they must be great. The band was formed in 1976 under the riff-rolling leadership of guitarist Brian Tatler. DIAMOND HEAD would quickly establish themselves as a vanguard of the exploding New Wave Of British Heavy Metal scene. Their genre-defining debut album Lightning To The Nations, influenced and opened gates for many of the metal bands I grew up loving. The Coffin Train, DIAMOND HEAD's eighth studio album, is a glorious testimony to Brian Tatler and Rasmus Bom Andersens' masterful ability to create the flavors necessary for prime DIAMOND HEAD music. Steven’s Mixed Tapes – Volume 1 EP98
Episode Description: The idea behind Steven's mixed tapes is basically to play some great rock music while sharing a few stories about growing up. Steven's mixed tapes is basically my version of a radio show. Radio wishes it played kick ass music like this and without the commercials or yearly subscription fees. What’s The Story: When I was a kid in school, I made it a point to put together mixed cassettes of all the bands and songs I loved. Everytime a new record came out or I read about some band in Kerrang magazine, I picked up the cassette and dubbed it off in my state of the art duel cassette player. I would bring them to school the next day and share them with all my metalhead buddies. Listener Questions, You Asked, We Answered – EP97
Episode Description: Sonny and Steven answer listener questions. They cram a bunch of great music into this already laugh filled episode while trying to answer some great questions about rock n roll and the meaning of life. OK, I made that last part up and besides they aren't qualified to answer life questions, they're idiots. What’s The Story: You asked and we answered. Sonny and I open our lives up to the listeners and answer a boatload of questions ranging from Sonny’s love for Alias and his hatred of Rush to why I can’t figure out the answer to a question in which the Podcast is named after. After 96 episodes, we figure why not turn over the questioning to some of our listeners and let them ask away. We did our best to answer most of the questions but some of the questions were, well how can I put this? Dumb! Top 10 Live Albums – EP 96
Episode Description: Sonny and I pick our Top 10 Live Albums growing up. We discuss why they were important to us, and play some of our favorite tracks from those albums. What’s The Story: Nowadays Live Albums are released all the time. If you are into a band, chances are they have released a live record. Back in the late 70’s and early 80’s live albums were much more of an event. In most cases the bands were already well established and the live album would be released about 4 or 5 records into the bands career. For me growing up and I suspect in a lot of other people’s lives, live albums were a way to check out a band. A greatest hits so to speak. If you liked it, then go down that “rabbit hole” and pick up some of the studio releases. In some artist cases, they owe everything to the live album. Peter Frampton and Kiss come to mind immediately. They were struggling before they released their first live albums. I consider myself much more of a studio track guy, but in my youth, I simply wore out the live albums we will be discussing in this episode. Mick Sweda of Lies, Deceit, & Treachery – EP095
Episode Description: Guitarist Mick Sweda joins Sonny and Steven to talk about his current band Lies, Deceit, & Treachery, as well as his time in the Bulletboys and King Kobra. Sweda is joined in Lies, Deceit & Treachery by two other original members of Bulletboys plus Last In Line frontman Andrew Freeman. We chat about some of the trials and tribulation of the music business and get into his earliest musical memories. What's The Story? We use the term "desert island" album a lot on this show. For both Sonny and I, the Bulletboys debut album falls into that category. Like so many others, I discovered the Bulletboys through the "Smooth Up In Ya" video on MTV, quickly went out and got the album, and became a fan. In addition to the Bulletboys record, I was also a fan of the King Kobra debut, and although not a "desert island" record, I was known to crank it up from time to time. So it was a real pleasure to speak to Mick, who was absolutely cool as hell and very gracious with his time. - Steven Michael Mick Sweda is a songwriter, guitarist and singer born in Gowanda, New York on April 18, 1960. After attending college on a drama scholarship and touring the east coast with various bands, Sweda moved to Los Angeles. He spent time in various musical projects, including the band Stormtrooper whose Armies of the Night EP surfaced in 1985. In 1984, he was approached by Carmine Appice to join his new band King Kobra, which had been signed to Capitol Records. Sweda recorded two records with King Kobra (Ready to Strike and Thrill of a Lifetime) and toured extensively, opening for bands such as Iron Maiden, Kiss and Ted Nugent. Sweda left the band in 1987 and started BulletBoys with Lonnie Vencent and Marq Torien, the latter of whom had briefly served as King Kobra's lead singer. The band signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1988. Upon the release of their eponymous debut, the band toured extensively opening for bands such as Cheap Trick, Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne and others, as well as headlining theaters. BulletBoys recorded two more records for Warner Bros. (Freakshow and Za-Za) and supported both records with tours before Sweda left the band in 1993.
