As a character, I think Tom is a great example of why paranormal investigators get the following/attention they do. Yes, the claims they make are a little out there, but they've got this likeable and genuine air about them. Tom's especially genuine and maybe a bit awkward (but in the best way). Maybe you could consider this show a bit of a character study almost? I don't have the brain power to make a conscious decision on that front.
