This radio adaptation of Director, John Ford's 1948 film features John Wayne and Ward Bond re-creating their roles in the film. What was unique about the story is that it is one of the first westerns that treated Native Americans with sympathy and respect. Captain York (John Wayne) is all about treating Cochise (Apache leader) with truthfulness and respect, while is commanding officer is much more aggressive and itching for a confrontation. Despite York's advice, the Colonel makes the decision to attack Cochise and his warriors... and the ending is rather depressing. However, it is a significant story for 1948 in the way that it sends the message that the Native Americans had not been treated well and the policy of the US Government needed to be evaluated and changed. This story will be kept in the "Western" Playlist on this podcast.
