Seven Last Words Series #4
The Agony and Ecstasy of the Cross
Episode 45

This message deals with the anguish of the cross for Jesus and the resulting ecstasy for us.

Matthew 27:46 (NIV)
46  About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
This then is the 4th word that Jesus spoke as he hung there upon the cross -- the word of “anguish.”

There are times when we feel like God is far away, that He has abandoned us.  It is a very real feeling.  But we can trust that God will again show up and be at work in our life.

Think about this: how could anyone who had such a close relationship with God the Father be forsaken?  But that was a very real feeling that Jesus had that afternoon.

And not only did he feel it, it was reality.  God did indeed turn away. There are basically 2 reasons for what was happening at the 3 o’clock hour.  They both blend together, but at the same time they are 2 distinct individual reasons.  What are they?

·      Because of sin.  Jesus died on the cross to make a way for our sins to be forgiven.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (NLT)
21  For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ

Isaiah 53:5-6 (NLT)
5  But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.
6  All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the LORD laid on him the sins of us all.

·      And because of the holiness of God. The 2nd reason as to why God turned away, and that is because God is holy.  And being holy He had to turn away.
