On this episode I speak with Ms Vivi Vex, an up-and-coming icon of fashion at the intersections of sex work and mental health. She navigates the sex-positive communities, full-service sex work, modeling, and fashion with invisible disabilities that she’s not shy to make explicit and visible. What’s it like to navigate sex and sexuality with invisible disabilities? How can the sex-positive communities provide space for people with invisible disabilities to explore and embrace their identity? What’s it like to be a sex worker with autism? Ms Vivi Vex provides insightful information from her experiences growing up with Autism, anti-vax and sex-negative parents, and issues communicating with others while attempting to discover her sex and sexuality. This episode is also a good listening exercise because it doesn’t follow the typical script. Ms Vex explains the issues that people on the spectrum have with communicating while attempting to communicate about her experiences. She asks for patience, instead of pity. Understanding, instead of judgement. Equitable treatment, instead of disregard. And hopefully you gain some insight on how to engage with people with invisible disabilities. Vivi wants to explore healthy and enjoyable sex. To explore her sexuality and to continue doing sex work. She found an outlet to do that in the sex-positive communities and is on her way to world domination though fashion, sex work, and mental health advocacy. On this episode I speak with Boon Ong of Boon Ong Figuratif Photography, an intimate lifestyle photographer seeking to liberate himself and his subjects by highlighting the vulnerabilities and intimacies that reside at the core of taboo. Boon came to Canada to pursue his parent’s dreams of becoming an engineer. Along his journey he fell in love with photographing nude art, and soon nude subjects. When he began publishing his work, he got a call from his mother in Malaysia, calling him a disgrace. It didn’t deter him, because there was something deeper he needed to expose—himself. Nude photography helped him come out and find his freedom. The exposition of the taboo enables the liberty to live a life often considered taboo. Boon says we all have closets, so maybe what he does is peek inside to bring some light to the darkness. He helps unravel the intimate lifestyles of humans in their sacred space. He doesn’t have an idealistic mission, but he does have a story. Find Boon Ong on: IG: @bofiguratif Web: boonongfiguratif.com Support Intellectual Erection at: patreon.com/intellectualerection
On this episode I speak to seasoned polyamorist Steve Sandford about some of the ideas featured in an article he wrote on polyamory hacks. Steve is a radically honest polyamorist and it runs in the family. He grew up around sex work, and sex positivity, and has been in the fetish scene in Toronto for a very long time. When his monogamous marriage ended nearly 15 years ago, he decided to embrace polyamory and has been at it ever since, slowly documenting his experiences over time and coming up with an ever-growing list of polyamory hacks. We cover a handful of them in this episode from deprograming possessiveness, to full disclosure versus don’t ask don’t tell policies, practicing brutal polyamory, developing a jealousy sponsor, to ghosting and stashing. We spend considerable time discussing jealousy and whether you’re polyam or not, you’ll find it useful. On this episode I speak with Isla and Ruby, your friendly neighbourhood full-service sex-workers. They’re here to tell you how they found liberation through sex-work—from toxic relationships and environments to an empowered sisterhood. Isla is young, away from home, and about to get married, when she realizes there must be more to life than this. She’s already been making some money doing online sex-work, when, enter Ruby, she’s introduced to the possibilities available through full-service sex-work. Ruby had been working through an agency and showed Isla the ropes, a sort of mentorship. Eventually, Ruby went off to do independent sex-work and Isla has remained with the agency for the community and experience. They’re both good friends and here to share their individual takes on sex-work. Isla talks about what it’s like being an asexual woman of colour and a sex-worker, and Ruby discusses her invisible physical disabilities and how they intersect with her sex-work. Together, they have found ways to help one another and advocate for healthy and informed ways to enter the matriarchy of sex-work. On this episode, I speak with Professor Lewis…again! We pick up where we left off last time, discussing the intricacies of polyamorous relationships and now diving deeper into the meanings of love, sex, passion, commitment, novelty, excitement, and how these interplay with one’s identity. Lewis is back at it again with the same professorial charm and wit that you enjoyed on his first episode, this time candidly sharing his deepest experiences of sex and pleasure, and how these are informed by his navigation of polyamory and kink. We discuss definitions of sex, love, the body, pleasure, freedom, and novelty, and how these interplay with social media, identity, commitment, and polyamory. Lewis provides a well-ruminated account of his sexual and emotional experiences that have shaped his identity, led him to better understand his body, helped negotiate his role in relationships, and made him recognize his needs and fantasies. Armed with an approachable academic allure, Lewis stimulates the intellectual in our erection and gives us plenty food for thought. Support Intellectual Erection at: patreon.com/intellectualerection
On this episode I speak with Oasis Aqualounge Co-Owner Fatima Mechtab about the sex club, the events she runs and markets there, and the porn she’s begun to produce out of the club. We get into the details about sex club events, the Projekt Panties (as seen on Instagram), and how the Oasis porn is different from mainstream pornography. Fatima takes us through some of the history of Oasis Aqualounge, the only water-based (I’d call it a spa) sex club in Toronto, and in fact, really the only sex club in downtown Toronto. Oasis will soon turn 10 years old, and Fatima has been with the club almost since its inception, first as a marketing director, and now also as co-owner. She has helped produce sexy events like mega parties, suits and nudes, masquerade, sapphic aquatica, swordplay, and money shot—featuring sex educators, workshops, demos, and live porn shoots. Fatima aims to create organic pornography with diverse bodies in semi-scripted situations, shot live in front of Oasis guests, and distributed in the club and on PornHub for free. On this episode I speak with Pandora, a book keeper and personal trainer who has spent much of her life denying her polyamorous inclinations for the sake of satisfying the norms she grew up with surrounding love, sex, and pleasure. Pandora opens up about her experiences having been married and monogamous for most of her life, and having felt that she fundamentally denied her deeper desires to explore her sexuality, sex, pleasure, and the liberty to love multiple people. She examines the norms and pressures that prevented her from seeking multiple romantic relationships, which had for a long time been deeply rooted in her being. She talks about marriage and the performance of the good wife, while putting her own needs on the backburner, which have now become available once again after her divorce, and the challenges she now faces navigating the sex positive communities and poly relationships. On this episode I speak with Greg and Edith about their relationship as polyamorists, their former marriages, and how they envision a future for poly folks. Greg and Edith open up about their former relationships, having been married and monogamous, and how their divorces led them to seek other opportunities in the sex positive and poly communities. They discuss their first date at Oasis Aqualounge, and how that first experience led them to form a relationship where they seek to explore their hedonism together. They examine what happiness means for them, what constitutes love and good sex in their relationship, and what they’re looking for in building a future together. Finally, they provide some insight into the sociopolitical issues faced by some poly folk and how the future might look brighter given certain changes. On this episode I speak with Insta famous tattoo artist Curt Montgomery about his journey into the sex positive communities, as we isolate and continue to fight COVID-19. Curt Montgomery has been creating fine art for a long time. After partying away his 20s, then going sober for 18 years, he got into the tattoo scene and eventually realized there was a niche for highly sexual monochromatic tattoos. More recently, Curt’s tattoos have come to life as he’s embarked on a journey through the sex positive communities, experiencing for the first time in all their glory the erotic and perverse sex scenes that his tattoos depict. Now as he sits in quarantine and occupies himself with his art, his drawings and acrylics are inspired not by imagination but by memory. On this episode I speak with sex researcher Chantelle Ivanski, author of the article Exploring definitions of sex positivity through thematic analysis. Her research aims to define and understand sex positivity. Have you actually thought at length about what sex positivity means? How do you define it? Chantelle has been researching sex positivity in order to get a working definition for psychological studies on the topic. Her aim is to create a sex positivity scale for research. One particular area of interest is whether people can become more sex positive through education on the subject, and this scale would help measure those results. Chantelle and I talk at length about definitions of sex positivity and sex negativity. Where these concepts came from. How they operate historically and now. We discuss her paper, the survey she employed to her participants, and the results. I also took the survey and we discuss my answers compared to her sample from the study. On this episode I speak with Kingpin—local Toronto staple, vintage men’s shop owner, ordained priest and exorcist, and overall lovable weirdo here on the show to test out his collection of anti-hysteria devices on our very special returning guest Edith—in hopes of sexorcising her uterus demons. First thing’s first! We get to know a little bit about this mysterious Toronto local, who’s probably been to your party and you didn’t even know it—Kingpin. He’s been running and curating Kingpin’s Hideaway—not your average vintage store, but a gentlemen’s clothing and accoutrement shop. Before all this he was, and still is a Master’s of Divinity Priest at your ready for Weddings and Exorcisms of the wild wild West, steam punk, star wars, furry, or any other orgy of decorated humans subverting the traditional purity-posturing ceremonies. From his dark and devious collection of antiques, Kingpin has meticulously selected an assortment of devices from the anti-hysteria period—basically archaic vibrators used to calm women down in the 19th-20th centuries when it was believed their emotional volatility would dislodge their uterus. So, when doctors got tired of the manual labour, they opted for mechanical assistance to regulate these out-of-control women by bringing them to climax. Kit opens up about some serious issues as well, like rape and mental health, and how these experiences have shaped who they have become, where they found strength in adversity, and how they’ve managed to overcome the suffering to be able to love, feel empowered, and share in sex positivity. Kit has a creative spirit that is brought to the forefront of their performativity in burlesque, stripping, drag shows, spectator sex, and web cam shows, as well as their most recent venture into spiritual meditation, tarot card readings, and massage. We discuss the nuances of polyamory and how it plays out in relationships, how people turn to polyamory as an independent choice and how sometimes people may see it as a way to solve issues in their existing monogamous relationships.
