Here’s what Jimmy and Will talked about in Episode 79:

– Getting to know Dr. Will Cole at DrWillCole.com

– Could bioidentical hormone therapy prevent weight loss for people who are eating a ketogenic diet?

Hey Jimmy and Dr. Cole,

I’m a big fan of Keto Talk and want to welcome Dr. Will Cole to the show. Since he’s got a lot of patient experience regarding hormonal issues, maybe Dr. Cole can help me understand why I’m not as successful at losing weight on my ketogenic diet as I had hoped to be. I am currently taking bioidentical hormones and wonder if that could be part of my struggle with weight loss. I did Atkins four years ago and it worked fine for me then. But it’s so much harder for me this time around. Can you guys help me understand whether these hormones I am taking are sabotaging my efforts?

Thanks for your response.

1. Can you diagnose a low thyroid function on a TSH number alone? How will keto help to fix the issues that concern my doctor?

Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole,

I’m a big fan of all your books and podcasts, Jimmy, and I've been a Keto Talk listener since the very beginning. I’m excited to hear what Dr. Cole has to add to an already amazing show. I went to see a new doctor last week for a physical and she has all her new patients do some bloodwork. When the results came in (see them below), her office called me to inform me that my total cholesterol and LDL-C are way too high (230 and 153 respectively). I asked why these numbers mattered when my HDL and triglycerides are 62 and 73 respectively thanks to eating a ketogenic diet and I was told my "bad" cholesterol was too high. I wasn’t worried about it because I’d read Cholesterol Clarity and knew what really mattered.

When I went to see my doctor in the office, she wrote me a prescription for Levothyroxine because she says my thyroid level is too low and that it's driving up my total cholesterol and liver enzymes. When I asked whether a higher insulin level could cause this, she insisted that I couldn’t possibly have high insulin with my normal HbA1c. She wouldn’t run the fasting insulin nor the particle size cholesterol test that I requested. And I also noticed she only tested TSH, which does seem high. But I don't know if that means my thyroid is low or not. So my question for you guys is this: Is it possible that the thyroid function is low simply based on a high TSH level? Does a ketogenic diet help with this or do I need to do other things to bring this into line so my cholesterol and liver enzymes can normalize?

Thanks and keep up the good work you guys are doing!

2. Can a ketogenic diet help improve psoriasis? And what other things should I be doing to help with this autoimmune condition?

Hey Jimmy and Will,

In your experience, what impact does the ketogenic diet have on an autoimmune disease such as psoriasis? Are there other things I need to be doing in addition to dietary changes to help improve this?

Thank you for your help!

Deborah

3. What role does a ketogenic diet plan in helping to treat small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and candida?

Hi Jimmy and Will,

I'm interested in learning more more about the role of ketogenic diets to help treat SIBO and candida. I have both of these conditions and I am also breastfeeding! Most of the information I can find about this seems to target pregnancy with breastfeeding lumped into that group. I would really like to try keto but all I have read is mixed information about ketones feeding bacteria and yeast but then so do carbs. It’s so confusing! Any information you have on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Ani

– Can taking a cortisol-lowering supplement during your period offset the negative effects on ketosis and weight loss? Or is the higher cortisol serving a purpose?

Hey Jimmy and Dr. Cole,

My boyfriend and I listen to your podcast together and it has helped convince me that this is the lifestyle for us to follow. So thank you. After going through some significant health issues, including cervical cancer at the age of 28, I have struggled getting my hormones under control. I am perfectly healthy now except for the effects of dramatically surging hormones much more intensely than other women do.

I’ve learned from your show that women are less likely to be in ketosis during their period cycle because of an increase in cortisol levels which can then lead to a stall in weight loss. But my question for you guys is this: Would taking a cortisol-lowering supplement offset the negative effects on ketosis and weight loss during that time of the month for menstruating women? Or does that higher cortisol level serve a purpose in our body and health? I get so stressed with hunger and cravings when my period hits and I’m wondering what a ketogenic woman can do to deal with this each month during her cycle.

Thanks again for the great show and the awesome work that you do!

Kristi
