ANNOUNCEMENTS/Other Comments

July Topic

The topic for July is #PublicLands. Please get your submissions in by the 27th of July to be considered for the broadcast on the 29th. I’ll be going back to YouTube for these broadcasts, and I’ll try a slightly earlier time frame as well. We’ll plan on 6:15 p.m. Pacific Time. And remember the idea of CONTRASTS if possible.

A listener asked a question about where to print a large image. About 8x40 inches or maybe even twice that. Since this is a special size for sure, you have to look for labs that will handle it, and do it well. I recommended photocraft out of Boulder, CO. https://pcraft.com

I’ve worked with them in the past and they did great work. They have lightjet prints and the standard inkjet printing, though they’ll call it gicleé on their website. Unfortunately, they don’t have online ordering at the moment, not sure what’s going on with that, but I can definitely vouch for their quality work.

Also, for framing, take a look at https://pictureframes.com

Though if you get up to 80” you’re going to be quite limited on the matting and framing options. It’s my dream that I’ll be able to set up a router in my new place and make my own custom frames. One of these days it will happen…

I picked up a DJI Pocket 2 camera. It’s a tiny little thing, gimbal stabilized and does amazing quality work. They also put 4 mics in it so it can really get some quality audio going as you’re talking along while you walk. I also got the add-on unit that allows for wireless control of the camera and a wireless mic too. I’m looking forward to trying this out on the trail starting tomorrow. I fixed my car, as long as I did it right I’ll be on my way for three nights in the wilderness. I’ll know if I did it right once the AC gets recharged. If it leaks I know I’ll be tempted to open up my little book of bad words and use a few of them… :)

MAIN TOPIC

Today I’m joined by Chuck Haney, a photographer that has lots of experience shooting in a place I’m headed to later this year so I’m thrilled to have this conversation with him today. Chuck, welcome to the show.

  1. Tell us a bit about your journey as a photographer. Wherever you’d like to start…
  2. TRNP, I’d like to start with the most overlooked part of the park, where should I go that most folks don’t but the opportunities are excellent for great images?
  3. I’m considering spending all my time in either the North or South unit. I have 5 days of shooting and I want to be able to get a “deep” look at the park. That may mean I leave certain things out. I’m open to hiking and backpacking, though it looks like I can simply camp and simply drive to the various trailheads. What would you recommend for someone with five full days of shooting?
  4. Specific areas of interest South Unit:
    1. Petrified Forest Area
    2. Wind Canyon
    3. Painted Canyon
    4. Scenic Loop Drive with various overlooks
    5. Jones Creek
    6. Peaceful Valley Ranch
  5. Specific areas of interest North Unit:
    1. River Bend Overlook
    2. Caprock Coulee Trail
    3. Oxbow Overlook
    4. Little Mo Trail
  6. Anything else you’d like to share about the park?
  7. Specific discussion about your images from the park. Describing each image and a bit about the story of each image.
