RATING
I grew up with Reading Rainbow, so the nostalgia of Mr. Burton reading a story is nearly irresistible
How do you review a podcast that is without a doubt one that hits all the points. Production? Check. Host? Check. Nostalgia? Check. Fantastic books and stories in every episode. You can listen to this show at night as Mr. Burton lulls you to sleep, or listen to them when you're having a rough day to pick you up, or simply because you want to binge a fantastic show. Minor side recommendation, LeVar Burton also narrates for the book "The Good Neighbor" which is essentially him narrating the life of Mr. Fred Rogers. How much more wholesome can you possibly get‽
Does what it says on the tin. One of the warmest, friendliest voices in the world (who helped teach me to love reading growing up, of course) reads short fiction to you. He reads a pretty good variety, although he tends toward SciFi and Fantasy -- which is fine by me. If you grew up on Reading Rainbow, this podcast is like hearing the opening music all over again.A great author to do would be the amazing Connie Willis, incidentally. Her novels probably get more attention than her short stories, but her Christmas collect(s... sort of) is filled with fun stories, usually a bit sci-fi, for the season and almost any would make a great holiday podcast.
There's just something so wonderful about a good story read well, and you couldn't ask for a better reader than LeVar Burton. The sound design is also top-notch, making for a truly immersive storytelling experience. More than that, though, I really appreciate how diverse the show is, with many of the stories being written by women and people of color. There's a heavy focus on speculative fiction, but a wide variety of styles and subgenres are represented, and the show is just a joy to listen to.
Levar has an amazing voice and he gets all goofy with accents and different voices for each character. As he says, these are stories he loves, and you can feel that love in the way he reads them. His commentaries on the stories are also priceless. And, yes, I do the breathing thing with him.
This is such a gem. A great selection of beautiful short stories, beautifully read with one of the most soothing and satisfying voices there is. Like candy for my ears. Also, I owe this podcast my thanks for helping me discover new authors and books to love. I'd like to give an extra star for the diversity in the selection when it comes to women, POC and non-American authors. Thank you LeVar <3
Perfect, moving, engaging stories for the ride into work. I've laughed and cried too many times to count.
This podcast is truly a gift. Not only do you get to hear the wonderful voice and acting of Levar Burton, but you also get to hear the stories personally curated by him. I've only just started listening and I have been exposed to stories and authors I will continue to enjoy. His ability to add emotion and depth to an audio version is truly wonderful and makes the stories come to life. Even if you don't remeber Reading Rainbow, you are sure to enjoy this podcast.
Always loved this series.
I don't like audiobooks. I'd rather read and live in the world of a book on my own. That said, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to check this out when it first launched because of my love for LeVar Burton and Reading Rainbow growing up. I love it! It's the closest I'll get to listening to audiobooks. I don't listen to it regularly, but knowing it's there as sort of comfort food when I need something peaceful to listen to and relax with is really nice. But you don't have to take my word for it!
If you 1) remember Reading Rainbow; 2) like short fiction or 3) none of the above, try this show. It's the coolest middle school English teacher you could ever have beamed directly into your ears.5/5 low flying butterflies
This is Reading Rainbow, but for adults. I have enjoyed a lot of the stories. Some of them haven't been my cup of tea, but that doesn't mean that Mr. Burton isn't doing a great job presenting it....but you don't have to take my word for it.
I want to give LeVar Burton Reads 100 stars. Love all the short stories. Some have made laugh, cry and think about life in a different way.
As a kid I was a loyal Reading Rainbow fan, I never missed it and now I can continue curling up and enjoy more of LeVar Burton in this podcast done with Sticher. The show has 4.9/5 stars for a reason. Every Tuesday, solo host Burton (with the help of his team who he never fails to credit) reads one of his favorite fictional short stories from a diverse selection of contemporary and classic writers. I’ve found so many more PoC authors from this pod than I would have on my own. The support and inclusiveness is a goal to emulate. Production is excellent across the board with voice and soundscaping expertly done. Equal parts soothing and familiar Burton’s talented reading voice is another great staple of the show. It’s perfect for every character regardless of which emotion is being conveyed and the selection of stories always challenges you to think critically. Just a warning for those who are looking for happy ever after endings: the stories read are usually spotlight Science Fiction, Speculative Fiction, and Fantasy which sometimes results in suspenseful unresolved conclusions. Despite this, one similarity between the tales is that they are all brilliant. So much so that I listen to them twice. Once as I go to sleep and then again the next morning to hear what I missed. They’re too good to be only for sleep. Beware of episode notes about content which he reminds listeners of every episode. There is swearing and once I heard a slur but again all in the show notes and a part of the read story. At the end of every story Burton gives his own opinions about the reading in a short debrief that wraps everything up nicely. 132 episodes so far all about 45 minutes on average with new episodes coming out weekly on Tuesdays. My favorite episodes have been "Dark Spaces on the Map'' by Anjali Sachdeva, and "Jump" by Cadwell Turnbull. Owltail’s most popular are listed as LIVE! in DC: "A Dark Night '' by Edward P. Jones and "Multo '' by Samuel Marzioli. Commercial amount is average but never wakes me up. This pod is for anyone who considers themselves a lover of books or fantastic narration. Nothing beats Reading Rainbow for adults!
The music makes it impossible for me to process the words.
