Sue Shapcott

Dr. Sue Shapcott has been working in and around the golf industry for over 25 years. Sue grew up playing golf in Bristol, England. As an amateur, Sue represented Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) women’s team. She was a member of a winning Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup team and also won a bronze medal for GB&I in golf’s World Cup. Sue turned professional in 1989 and played competitively on the Ladies European Tour and the Asian Tour. She trained as a coach with the British PGA. Sue’s coaching career took off in 2000 when she was recruited to coach for Hank Haney in Dallas, TX. During this time, she watched Haney teach dozens of lessons – ranging from beginner golfers to tour players. Sue said this experience opened her eyes to how effective coaches could be.

In 2005, Sue left Haney’s Golf Schools and was appointed Director of Instruction at Dallas’s busiest public facility, Tenison Park. During this period, she taught a couple of LPGA players, but her main client base was new and recreational players. Sue realized that although coaching professional players was a tribute to her experience and knowledge, she garnered more enjoyment from helping new and recreational golfers. While at Tenison Park, Sue felt she had more than sufficient technical knowledge to help her students, but wanted to understand how to better motivate them. Although she had personal experience to draw from, she looked for more of an evidence-based approach to the problem. In 2010 Sue graduated with a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology from Arizona State University – focusing on the differences in motivation of male and female recreational golfers. She continued her research at the University of Bath where she received a PhD in Education.
