I loved this podcast. I listened to the first episode, realized I was hooked, and then put it aside for a few months so I could read the novel. When I finished the book, I came back to the podcast and listened to the whole thing in just a few days.
It starts with a look at the novel and its author, expands to examine early film and theatre adaptations, and then looks at its effect on popular culture from the mid 20th Century to now. It is extensively researched, and there are interviews with experts that add to our understanding.
This is such a divisive novel that everyone will have an opinion. Loftus doesn't seem to have a judgement for the novel, but she is fiercely insistent that allowing our collective cultural obsession with the sexuality of underage girls to go unexamined has harmful effects. I definitely agree with her about that.
