LLP064: Are you better off with an academic doctor
Today's episode is a discussion on which type of a physician is the best one to take care of you in the clinic setting. This week I was able to attend the American College of Internist conference for residency trainers and it hit home that I was truly assuming the role as an academic physician. There has always been discussion on the importance of the academic physician in healthcare and medical education but for the Lunch and Learn community the question becomes is that academic physician better to take care of patients on a day to day basis than the community doctors.   Find out today why some doctors choose to go the academic route and why others shy away from the responsibility.  Listen on  Apple Podcast, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, iHeartRadio, Spotify Social Links Join the lunch and learn community - http://www.drpierresblog.com/joinlunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/lunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on twitter - http://www.twitter.com/lunchlearnpod - use the hashtag #LunchLearnPod if you have any questions, comments or requests for the podcast For More Episodes of the Lunch and Learn with Dr. Berry Podcasts http://www.drpierresblog.com/lunchlearnpodcast/ If you are looking to help the show out Leave a review on Apple Podcast because your ratings and reviews are what is going to make this show so much better Download the MP3 Audio file, listen to the episode however you like.

LLP065: A Physician's Quest, To Serve Or Not To Serve
Today's episode I discuss when and why I started on my path to serve my patients, my community and last but not least the Lunch and Learn Community. Over the past month I have attended to two very different conferences one focused on putting myself in the position to serve myself better and the other on how can I put my medical residents in the best position to succeed. Both had different agendas but the underlying theme was the act of serving.  Find out just when I made the decision to go on this path of medicine where the act of serving is what kept me going even at the low points.
LLP088: Why Your Doctor Hates Fat People
Introduction... On this week's podcast episode we discuss what appears to be the tried and true tradition of bias against overweight and obese people in the health field. I would love to say that I am shocked by the findings but growing up always on the heavier side it was quite evident that things are different when you are overweight in the doctor's office. What to look for... Listen to the show as I discuss just what happened to bring this podcast episode to the light. LLP040: Why World Mental Health Day is an Every Day Issue with Maria Davis-Pierre LMHC
At the time of the recording I had a totally different game plan for tonights episode but being that it was World Mental Health Day I didn't want to miss an opportunity to bring up a topic that I hold near and dear to me. I again enlisted the assistance of Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Maria Davis-Pierre to give her professional take on the sheer importance of World Mental Health day in regards to recognizing the problem of the lack of awareness for mental health. During the episode we talk about not only why we need to continue the discussion of mental health but focus on giving less power to the stigmas associated with it.       Links/Resources  Death and Dying Episode SStop telling young boys to man up Healing and Recovery Group Day by Day Therapy  Maria Davis-Pierre's Business Page In this episode you will learn: Importance of World Mental Health Day Why we have to take the time to recognize when we have a problem When she would seek help The best ways professionals can approach patients who may not be directly asking for help Social Links Join the lunch and learn community - www.drpierresblog.com/joinlunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on Facebook - www.facebook.com/lunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on twitter - @LunchLearnPod - use the hashtag #LunchLearnPod if you have any questions, comments or requests for the podcast For More Episodes of the Lunch and Learn with Dr. Berry Podcasts  To share your thoughts: Leave a comment  Share this show on Twitter, Facebook  If you are looking to help the show out Leave a review on Apple Podcast  because your ratings and reviews are what is going to make this show so much better Just like I said earlier subscribe on Apple Podcast, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud and tell just one friend to subscribe as well.   Download the MP3 Audio file, listen to the episode however you like.

LLP092: Is Your Doctor Even The Right Person To Talk To About Getting Healthy?
Introduction... On this week's episode of the Lunch and Learn with Dr. Berry we have a follow up to last weeks show where we talked about New Years Resolutions. One key point that was brought up by one of the Lunch and Learn community members was that she didn't feel that a physician was such a big force in trying to lose weight and that her time would be better off chasing down those who could give her adequate time to learn. What to look for... On today's show we are going to talk about why your doctor isn't likely going to be your FIRST choice when its time to get healthy but probably going to be one of the more important ones. We also talk about different career fields that will help you along the journey to becoming the better you.   Listen on Apple Podcast, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, iHeartRadio, Spotify Sponsors: Lunch and Learn Community Online Store (code Empower10) Pierre Medical Consulting (If you are looking to expand your social reach and make your process automated then Pierre Medical Consulting is for you) Links/Resources: Food Essentials for the busy professional Find a Registered Dietician Bodyspace App Social Links: Join the lunch and learn community - https://www.drpierresblog.com/joinlunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/lunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on twitter - http://www.twitter.com/lunchlearnpod - use the hashtag #LunchLearnPod if you have any questions, comments or requests for the podcast For More Episodes of the Lunch and Learn with Dr. Berry Podcasts https://www.drpierresblog.com/lunchlearnpodcast/ If you are looking to help the show out Leave a Five Star Review on Apple Podcast because your ratings and reviews are what is going to make this show so much better Share a screenshot of the podcast episode on all of your favorite social media outlets & tag me or add the hashtag.#lunchlearnpod   Download the MP3 Audio file, listen to the episode however you like.
LLP098: What Rising Drug Prices and Patient Care Have In Common
Introduction... On this week's episode of the Lunch and Learn with Dr. Berry we discuss rising drug prices, an unfortunate but common practice in the health industry. Often when we talk about price gouging we tend to hear about unlawful business owners preying on those in need in times of great difficulty. Probably the most common time is during natural disasters where all of the sudden gas stations start charging $20 for a case of water because the supplies are low. On this episode I am going to talk about rising drug prices and what the drug companies do to families on a daily basis. 1. Whats the big deal with rising drug prices? As a former outpatient physician I learned very quickly which medicines my patients could afford and which they couldn't. It got to the point where I didn't even suggest medications because I knew it would mean that my patient would have to choose between getting dinner and filling a prescription. Which drug prices rise many people have to make these life or death decisions on a daily basis. Medication compliance because an issue and if you are someone who is trying to Empower Themselves For Better Health than it would impossible doing so without the medications you required. 2. Prescription drug price rising in 2019 Did you know that every year drug prices rise in which companies attribute to inflation but what is unfortunate that many drug companies tend to raise the price of these drugs with little added benefit to the customer(patient). 3. Are rising drug prices a health risk? Short Answer Yes.. Long Answer - When patients continue to see their life saving medications that were routinely affordable one year only to be "upgraded" and had their prices sky rocket they will just stop taking them. Questions I hope to answer for you... Why are drug prices rising? What are some of the most common drugs that have seen there prices sky rocket? What can we do to avoid having to make tough decisions about care? LLP009: Dr. Berry changes his mind on Medical Marijuana
In Florida we just approved it late 2016 for medical use and almost immediately I started getting calls on whether I would be subscribing it. Before you start I will let you know that it wasn't from people who were drug seeking but from people with complex medical conditions that reached a point where the only they had to turn to was the medical Marijuana. It has been one of hottest topics of medical debate over the past years. I can admit that I had strong opinions on the matter but after reading & doing my research I have changed my mind on everything. LLP006: Why you are having sleep issues and what you can do about it
One of the common questions I ask my patients right before the encounter is over is how their sleep is. For a few of them they respond that their sleep is amazing & probably sleep a bit too much but for most of them sleep problems have become such a common thing that they they just deal with it. Whether it be that they have trouble falling asleep or trouble staying asleep the results are still the same. The dream of getting 8 hours of sleep are something that they have never experierenced. If I had a penny for everytime one of my patients asked how they could get a good night sleep I'd be rich. I think one of my worst cases of sleep disorders was a patient who begin to have heart rhythm abnormalities that only occurred when they were trying to go to sleep. On today's episode we talk about some of the common reasons why you can't sleep & just how detrimental it can be for your health over the long run. You also be surprised to hear some of the tips that may help you starting getting a better night's rest today.   Social Links Join the lunch and learn community - www.drpierresblog.com/joinlunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on Facebook - www.facebook.com/lunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on twitter - @LunchLearnPod - use the hashtag #LunchLearnPod if you have any questions, comments or requests for the podcast For More Episodes of the Lunch and Learn with Dr.
LLP026: Why being the family counselor is too big a burden
In my office more often than not "the rock" in  the family is concerned about being over burdened. Its a very common theme to see with those who serve as the mental "rock" in their family because everyone tends to come to them because they are seen as the problem solvers. My biggest gripe is that for many of the "family counselors" they tend to have no one that they can lean on for emotional support so they are burdened with not only their personal issues, but the issues of everyone else. On this episode I try to implore the family counselors of the world to stop this practice immediately because it is slowly killing them mentally and emotionally. There is a reason counselors, therapist & doctors like myself go through the training we do because you have to learn how to deal with the problems of others but not let it affect your own.    In this episode you will learn: Help you identify if you are the problem Why people are trained to be counselors Why it is detrimental for your personal well being taking on the emotional burden of others Techniques to lessen the load Why just going to church isn’t helpful   Social Links Join the lunch and learn community - www.drpierresblog.com/joinlunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on Facebook - www.facebook.com/lunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on twitter - @LunchLearnPod - use the hashtag #LunchLearnPod if you have any questions, comments or requests for the podcast For More Episodes of the Lunch and Learn with Dr.
LLP036: The odd couple - Healthcare workers and hurricanes
Hurricane season has been a yearly occurrence for me growing up for as long as I can remember. Born and raised in south Florida  it was an all too common time getting the preparations in order for yet another season of uncertainty regarding this phenomenon that had loomed over our summers. It didn't matter how much you prepared for it there was always something we wish we had done more of. As a Physician,  hurricane season has taken on a whole new meaning for me. Recently Hurricane Irma took its toll on the region and while many friends and family were wanting to see if I had plans for evacuation the only plans I had time to think about was how to deal with the stress of patients who were either in the hospital or needed to be. I don't think people take for granted the importance of healthcare workers in a time of crisis but I they think they honestly forget that we tend to run towards the danger than away from it. On this episode I talk about the importance of the healthcare workers and even spotlight my Internal Medicine Residents and their efforts.     In this episode you will learn: My plans when then Hurricane Irma was on the way  Acknowledgements for the residents  Difference between team A & B in the hospital setting Who else deserves a round of applause in the hospital Social Links Join the lunch and learn community - www.drpierresblog.com/joinlunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on Facebook - www.facebook.com/lunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on twitter - @LunchLearnPod - use the hashtag #LunchLearnPod if you have any questions, comments or requests for the podcast For More Episodes of the Lunch and Learn with Dr.

Colon cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States and African Americans are hit even harder than the average. On this episode listen to some of the staggering numbers & effects of  colon cancer that can almost be prevented with routine screening. I can tell you that I have always been a strong advocate for my patients but in particular my African American patients to get all their routine screenings. LLP021: Finding out my child has autism
Hearing that your child has autism can be life altering and usually brings out way more questions than you could imagine. I remember when my wife who is a licensed mental health counselor began noticing developmental delays in our child that she was just uncomfortable with waiting to see how things played out. Being an internist, who specializes in the treatment of adults I was in the dark and really couldn't offer any guidance at the time so it was refreshing to see my wife go to work and despite all of the "experts" tell her that it was too early to diagnose she pressed forward. It was a great lesson in the treatment of autism where early intervention will always trump all.  On today's episode we discuss why autism is a big part in my life and why the key is early intervention.   Links/Resources  Waiting for a diagnosis Getting aware of autism In this episode you will learn: Why its such a personal issue for me Learn about his amazing wife efforts in the beginning Why early diagnosis is key How much it has made me a better father Social Links Join the lunch and learn community - www.drpierresblog.com/joinlunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on Facebook - www.facebook.com/lunchlearnpod Follow the podcast on twitter - @LunchLearnPod - use the hashtag #LunchLearnPod if you have any questions, comments or requests for the podcast For More Episodes of the Lunch and Learn with Dr.
