Jane Toppan, also known as “Jolly Jane,” was an organized lust serial killer in Massachusetts during the turn of the 19th century, who poisoned her patients when she worked as a nurse, as well as close friends and family members, claiming her main goal in life was to “have killed more people - helpless people - than any other man or woman who ever lived.” Jane confessed to murdering more than 31 people but when she was brought to trial for the murder of one of her victims, Minne Gibbs, she was found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity and committed to Taunton Insane Hospital in 1902, where she would spend the rest of her life. After her trial, she confessed to her lawyer that she enjoyed killing and blamed the man who jilted her as a teenager as the reason why she murdered so many people.
