Mighty Oaks avoids the obvious and the clichéd (e.g. pensions and bus passes), and focuses on older people as people who happen to be old. Age, for the most part, isn't focused on. Instead, compelling and surprising stories are told, in which the main characters happen to be older people. The older people featured in this series tell their own stories, filtered through their own experiences and opinions.

The series aims to oppose assumptions and stereotypes (held by younger or older people), portray older people and ageing itself in a positive light (without being condescending) and provide an opportunity for older people themselves to speak of their own lives.
