This is not a book for the small minded as Islam paints a big picture of the world within a Brooklyn that used to be and a journey to a homeland that the characters once knew. This is a book of self discovery, a coming of age story turned on its head, through multiple outlets and identities, she provides a developed voice for her characters. The descriptive style of the author puts you in the thick of the scene, making it tangible. It was especially enjoyable to read a book focused on people of color, an immigrant family, and a queer main character, making the book more palpable and relatable for us readers who don't normally find characters we can identify with in books, thanks Tanwi for this great read!! #SDLReadingCircleBright Lines: A NovelWonderful Summer Read!Bright Lines is such a vivid portrayal of the coming of age story. It perfectly depicts the inner turmoil and the revelations a person must take in order to become who they really are inside. All her characters are written so realistic, but my favorite character was Ella/El herself. I loved the way Tanwi's pictorial of her coming to himself is magically portrayed, and the combination of the reader being able to be transported into the beautifully described hallucinations.#SDLreadingcirclea thought-provoking, coming of age storyI read this for a book club, and honestly I may have given up on it early on if I hadn't had the incentive to finish for the discussion.... But so glad I did continue reading. The writing style I found a bit challenging, you often wonder where this story is going. But by the end it really gives you so much to think about and really gives you such a unique perspective on cultural competency and looking at life from someone else's point of view.
