We must all be informed about the gifts of the Spirit, which is our theme for this morning.  Scripture Lessons: 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 and Mark 1:9-15

No Other Gospel
Sermon for August 4, 2019 - GALATIANS: The Freedom of Christ - The focus of this sermon series is on the six essential claims that are made by the Apostle Paul pertaining to the Christian life. He deliberately exaggerates each one in his writing to drive home their importance for our faith. In each case, the focus is on the essential, unique, and irreplaceable gospel: the gospel of human freedom in Christ and ultimately the freedom of the Christ who, for the sake of freedom, has set us truly free!Scripture Lesson: Galatians 1:1-24
Knocking on Doors
Sermon for July 28, 2019 - Luke’s gospel presents us with what might be an unfamiliar version of the Lord’s Prayer and several short stories – waking a friend at midnight, and a child asking her father for a fish or an egg.  In each story, the friend or father gives what is requested, and sometimes more.  We see both the generosity of the giver and persistence of the asker in each story.  “How much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask” (Luke 11:13).Scripture Lessons: Colossians 2:6-15 and Luke 11:1-13

One Small Step - On Giant Leap
Sermon for July 21, 2019 - Fifty years ago, human beings touched down on the moon. Hundreds of millions of people around the world watched live as it happened. Since then, we have asked ourselves, “What does this mean?” What is the meaning of the universe, and humanity in the midst of it? An ancient hymn about Christ’s work gives us something to think about: “Because all the fullness of God was pleased to live in him, and he reconciled all things to himself through him —whether things on earth or in the heavens. He brought peace through the blood of his cross.” (Colossians 1:19-20 CEB)Scripture Lessons: Colossians 1:15-28 and Luke 10:38-42
The 70 Influencers
Sermon for July 7, 2019 - The average American is exposed to hundreds of advertisements every day. With all that ad clutter, how does a seller get the message through? Influencer marketing. It’s not about celebs. It’s about real people who have clout with other people. When Jesus was looking to spread the word about the kingdom of God, he didn’t post an ad — he sent out 70 influencers, and he’s still doing it today!Scripture Lessons: Psalm 30:1-12 and Luke 10:1-11, 16-20
The Worst of Times
Sermon for July 14, 2019 - What year was the worst year ever to be alive? Some historians have an answer to this question. The prophet Amos also has some ideas. This will lead us to a discussion of what we can do to ensure that our lives are full of goodness and meaning. The key is shifting the focus of our lives from “self” to “others."Scripture Lessons: Amos 7:7-15 and Luke 10:25-37
No Ifs, Ands, or Buts
Sermon for June 30, 2019 - As Jesus began calling his first disciples, he heard a lot of excuses. There were many reasons for not affirming the call to discipleship. His response to these excuses tells us that his disciples need to be focused on what lies ahead, not what is behind. What's more, it says a lot about priorities and unconditional commitment.Scripture Lessons: 2 Kings 2:1-2, 6-14 and Luke 9:51-62
Star Search
Sermon for June 23, 2019 - Jesus taught his disciples that they must take up their crosses daily and follow him. The Apostle Paul echoes that call, as he describes the work that he shared with his two young coworkers, Timothy and Epaphroditus. He says that we should all imitate Christ, as innocent, blameless children of God, "who shine like stars in the world."Scripture Lessons: Philliphians 2:14-18 and Luke 9:18-27
Praise God, From Whom All Blessings Flow
Sermon for June 6, 2019 - Trinity Sunday/Father's Day - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. (Ephesians 1:3)  Some hymnals attribute these words as the inspiration for the words of the Doxology - "Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures here below. Praise God above, ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen."Scripture Lessons: Ephesians 1:1-4 and John 16:12-15

A Disruptive Influence
Sermon for June 2, 2019 - Ascension Sunday - Change is usually disruptive. We may grumble at first, but we wouldn't have it any other way. It's life, and we see it happening in the Bible. If we pay attention, it could be happening in our spiritual lives as well. By its very nature, the Gospel is disruptive.Scripture Lessons: Acts 16:16-34 and Luke 24:44-53
The Lamb is the Light
Sermon for May 26, 2019 - Today's New Testament reading, from the last two chapters of the biblical canon, proposes the culmination of this world in a city with no sun, no moon, and no night.
