Getting Over the Creative Hump

Episode summary introduction:

In this episode, Jake talks about how he brainstorms creative topics and gets over the creative blocks that our mind floods us with. It's easier than ever to be a creator in 2022, and there are a lot of people that feel they have something to offer, but how do you put that into action? Even further, how do you overcome the negative thoughts and creative blocks that creep in and keep us from putting our creativity out there in the world? Jake gives you his thoughts; unsolicited

Topics discussed in this episode:

My creative brainstorming process:

1. Starts with an idea or problem

- I spend a lot of time thinking

- Find something that interests you

- I have struggled with trying to find topics that interest me vs. choosing topics that I think people want to hear.

- Don't listen to too many different opinions on solving problems

2. When you find an interest, explore it to its fullest extent

- Read articles, watch videos, practice getting better

- This helps you realize how deep your interest goes

3. Decide how you want to express yourself creatively around your interest

- Is it videos, blogs, pictures, podcasts, joining a group with people who share your interest

4. Plan out your creative content

- Plan lots of content

5. Take the leap and put your creativity out there

How I get over creative blocks:

1. Don't put too much pressure on yourself

2. Take a break or step back

- I ended up taking a break from the podcast unintentionally but it inspired me to get back to it

3. Do something you like that you don't have to think about

4. Don't mansplain to your audience

5. Just start

  • Brainstorming Techniques - Brainstorming combines a relaxed, informal approach to problem solving with lateral thinking. It encourages people to come up with thoughts and ideas that can, at first, seem a bit crazy. Some of these ideas can be crafted into original, creative solutions to a problem, while others can spark even more ideas.

While group brainstorming is often more effective at generating ideas than normal group problem solving, several studies have shown that individual brainstorming produces more – and often better – ideas than group brainstorming.

This can occur because groups aren't always strict in following the rules of brainstorming, and bad behaviors creep in. Mostly, though, this happens because people pay so much attention to other people that they don't generate ideas of their own – or they forget these ideas while they wait for their turn to speak. This is called "blocking."
