29–Maple Syrup’ed LED Misunderstandings and the Rise of German Fascism
Welcome to Episode 29 of Nooks and Crannies! 29–Maple Syrup’ed LED Misunderstandings and the Rise of German Fascism   :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Welcome folks to another Dazzling episode of Nooks and Crannies! Albeit a slightly more downcast endeavor (0:24) (3:08) To keep this promise Evan informs Matt of the reemergence of German-Style Fascism in the recent regional elections in Thuringia. We spin this into a discussion of societal apathy, the rise of polemic populists, how off-base Francis Fukuyama was and the ways xenophobia is used to deepen existing divides. Fun! (17:52): Pull up an arm chair, stoke that fire and adopt a pretentious expression…it’s time for another Canadian Heritage Minute with Evan and Matty! This week we have Jacques Cartier Misnaming Canada and the “Discovery” of Maple Syrup by apparently a bunch of starving settler colonialists, or something. And here is a link to that random story Matt stumbled upon about the Oklahoma Farmers turned away by the Canadian government in the mid 1800’s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9h51JxiC6U  )    (24:41) Hey is that an prematurely Old Man on a tin roof shouting at the moon?!? Nah, its just old man Matty with his surprisingly well researched rant on the increasing prevalence of LED headlights and the dangers they pose to old folks like himself. Here are the sources for my irrational anger: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/03/24/drivers-complain-dazzling-headlights-led-bulbs-installed-cars/ https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.dot.gov/files/vanderlofske.pdf https://www.theguardian.pe.ca/news/provincial/rcmp-warns-about-use-of-aftermarket-led-lights-1521/ https://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/27/automobiles/27LIGHT.html https://www.psychologicalscience.org/news/minds-business/cognition-at-the-speed-of-led-lights.html https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/16/health/blue-light-led-health-effects-bn-trnd/index.html https://www.ledsmagazine.com/smart-lighting-iot/smart-cities/article/16699866/light-and-human-health-led-risks-highlighted https://www.researchgate.net/publication/296621681_A_summary_of_LED_lighting_impacts_on_health (41:18): And to put a cap on this one, Matty in rather graphic detail, describes to Evan the nature and dimensionality of his long standing (pun absolutely intended) Knee injury, the physio he just got, for some reason Matt ties in mind-body dialectical phenomenology, all in a sad attempt to segue into an update on the Chronicity series *halfway done the transcriptions, like 30% done on the whole series. Be well, check you on the flip side, aren’t you lucky?! **If you read this far, congrats..as a special reward you are the first to know that we have another minisode upcoming! It will be about the algorithmic manipulation of our children through YouTube Videos based on the amazing essay written by James Bridle.   ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Episode (NUMBER) Links: Thuringia Elections: https://www.dw.com/en/german-european-stability-prospects-unclear-after-thuringia-election/a-51022595 Cartier and the Misnaming of Canada: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfKr-D5VDBU The “Discovery” of Maple Syrup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdikUhN4gSo James Bridle Youtube article: https://medium.com/@jamesbridle/something-is-wrong-on-the-internet-c39c471271d2 :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links All The Episodes Drop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.com Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcast Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/ Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Follow, Rate and Review on Podchaser (please!) 30 - The Meritocratic Mythos of Private Equity Firms or a Workers Revolt with Austerity and Chaka Khan
Welcome to Episode 30 of Nooks and Crannies! 30 - The Meritocratic Mythos of Private Equity Firms or a Workers Revolt with Austerity and Chaka Khan :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: (2:00) Meritocratic Meritocracy is a Relativistic Mythos: Evan and Matt kick things off with an interrogation of the concept of Meritocracy and how it relates to education and work. We look at how meritocratic expectations are embodied by many undergrads from privileged backgrounds are reinforced through their lived experiences vs how working class students approach expectations of meritocracy. Then Evan brings the chat to the workplace, how the idea of ‘hard work will pay off’ is a mythos *not totally untrue, just rare in practice but reinforced through cultural artifacts like the media. It is evident that Matty has been out of the ‘job game’ and ‘employment field’ for quite some time, but he tries to keep up… (20:38) Violet’s Terrible Two’s: Vi announced her presence on the pod so the BFF’s decided to do a lil impromptu ditty on her adventures *and our, with being a cantankerous 21/4 year old! We also chat about Matt’s birthday and both make each other feel bad for forgetting each others B-Day’s! Miss you mom… (24:20) Battle of Blair Mountain: Funny and tragic story from our collective Labour history. Hey, you like your weekend’s and 8 hour day? Maybe you are like me and think, hey Domestic Labour is just as valuable as conventional Labour..Or maybe you find yourself thinking: “You know what this protest needs, gatling-guns and homemade shrapnel, to spice things up!” Well hold onto your private detective agency badge folks, Evan is about to tell ya’all and an exasperated Mamoo about The Battle of Blair Mountain (W. Virginia)! (40:43) Impromptu Cast Commercial: Despite this being a pretty solid recording sesh by your valiant co-host’s, we had major technical issues (tape delay due to faulty internet), luckily we use Cast! The exceptional audio recording platform that has saved my arse on multiple occasions (I recorded the entire Chronicity Series *forthcoming, on Cast, I had major connectivity issues then too, the recordings are clean as a whistle). So if any podcaster is curious, give Cast a Try. (41:52) Timmies, Canada’s Favorite Private Equity Firm: What started as a begin yet very common Canadian Question: How do you take your Tim’s? Diatribed into a interesting investigation into Private Equity Firms, especially 3G Capital. Here is a link to their contact page, if you are curious as to why they use Temporary Foreign Workers or maybe just..what’s the deal with the fries at Tim’s? Be sure to reach out: https://www.3g-capital.com/contact.html After complaining about this for a bit, Evan offers up a couple more examples of the evils of PEF’s (Canadian Media conglomeration and the US housing market). Good Times! (57:42) And to end things on a lighter note, listen to this Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1KLqQq6TnTyfLG81ej1oaq and find out why the universalistic opinion (Evan and Matt’s wife Melly) all think that Matty has the musical styling’s of a 52 y.o. woman from Ohio. Yes folks, this is Matt’s much anticipated by no one: Great Female Singers (ongoing), recommendations are strongly encouraged eh..happy to add to this generic list :) :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links All The Episodes Drop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.com Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcast Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/ Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Follow, Rate and Review on Podchaser (please!) 27 - Election Night in Canada
Welcome to Episode 27 of Nooks and Crannies! Election Night in Canada :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Welcome Canadian registered voters and our “Traditional Allies” from around the globe! This episode is all about the upcoming Canadian Federal Election *Oct 21. Evan kicks things off by breaking Matt’s predicted Orange Wave and then they get into some Green Party bashing in the hopes that this will help pave the way towards an NDP landslide, which is actually a terrible thing as it might lead to a Conservative majority or a Liberal minority which also means that we might be helping the Bloc Quebecois but not the PPC. Confused yet? Have no fear, the fella’s explain all these acronyms and more in this episode. After giving a broad overview, we got into the weeds a bit to talk about the issues facing Canadian’s in this upcoming election; Students, the Environment, Cost of Living and Living Wages, how much Evan despises the term Armed Forces, why the Liberal Party is a bunch of black-face wearing hypocrites (See our most recent bonus episode: https://nooksandcrannies.podbean.com/e/bonus-episode-our-troubled-political-times/), and how the NDP will take pragmatic steps to actually lowering your costs of living through universal dentistry and pharmacare. This was our first attempt at a long form episode (no segments), hope you all enjoy. And be sure to hit subscribe as we will be releasing more bonus episodes as well as smaller minisodes (20ish mins) in the upcoming weeks. Until then, get your arse’s out to the ballot box on Oct 21 and vote for the Canada you want, not the one you feel stuck with…Peace and Solidarity Talk to ya’ll soon and aren’t we lucky?   ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Episode 27 Links: The NDP (New Democratic Party of Canada) Commitments The Conservative Party’s Stance of Immigration (gross) The Liberal Blackfacer’s Weak Ass, Future Broken Promises Elizabeth May’s Party The Rhino Party (cuz why the eff not?) 23 - Dated and Used Critical Pedagogy and Israeli Electoral Playoff Runs
Welcome to Episode 23 of Nooks and Crannies! Dated and Used Critical Pedagogy and Israeli Electoral Playoff Runs Welcome back to the podcast folks and thanks for sticking around during this tragic hiatus. Next episode will be an in memoriam Tribute Episode to Evan’s biggest fan and Mamoo’s Mom, Sue Sanderson…Love you mom, as you knew. This week is the episode we had banked from a number of weeks ago, we kick things off with an impassioned trip that Matty took to the crème de la crème Used Book store in Victoria BC called Russell Books (ps. NERD ALERT!! You can order online eh...) (5:02) “What Just Happened?” - On this edition of WJH? Evan graciously informed Matty on the results and the context behind the recent (3 months ago) Israeli Elections and how the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community is being used as a wedge issue to split the Right in that country. Fascinating as always, and here you thought I just keep Evan around for his incredibly dashing appearance?!? Here is a more recent article, not sure but it seems Israel just had another election..like yesterday or something! (19:30) Hey, folks did you know that Matty volunteers with a great group of Retired Folk down at his local forest pulling invasive species out and having just a grand ol’ time! Go volunteer with seniors, they will make you feel young and important!! _ Lil Nooks and Crannies PSA there eh… (22:55) No one asked for it, but here it is…the much anticipated CRITICAL PEDAGOGY segment!!! Mamoo is going to pedantically and egotistically teach you all how to “Think Proper”. What a dick eh?  (35:27) And to put a wrap on this thing, we, of course, give our predictions for the NHL and NBA finals. Hold onto your inflatable noisemakers folks, I think this might be our least informed sports segment of all time. GOOOOOOOO Grizzles!! Here is a Playlist that is all Broadway Musicals Especially the indelible Andrew Lloyd Webber :) :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links Archive of Episodes Topics and Lighthearted Complaints Watch Matty Fight on Social Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Graphics by Donna Hume ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Proud of you Lindsay The Foundation that we Chose, to Honour Mom’s Legacy
16 - Reflexive Wellness and Embodied Empathy w/Headhunters!
Welcome to Episode 16 of Nooks and Crannies! Reflexive Wellness and Embodied Empathy w/Headhunters This episode is all about Reflexivity and Wellness, how we can draw on our own experiences to forge relationships based on mutual understanding and by sharing experiences. Fear Not! We will unpack all this in the following ways: (6:55) Reflexivity is an anthropological methodology and perspective popularized by Renato Rosaldo in the early 90’s. His wife Michelle and he, went off to the Philipines in the 1970’s to conduct fieldwork with a group of Illongot headhunters. Tragedy befell Renato out there and it was this personal experience that inspired the amazing Culture and Truth: the remaking of social analysis. Evan and Matt read passages from this text as a way of unpacking the nuances, Matt of course almost cries, Evan is as smooth as silk as always. Next episode we will include a discussion on how I applied this concept to my research on post-concussion syndrome in athletes, but for now, consider this a primer and introduction to ol Matty’s favorite anthropologist. Stay tuned to the end of this episode where I share the story of meeting Renato in Chicago at the AAA (American Anthropological Association), no spoilers, but of course Matty started slobber crying (1:00:15). Next (29:02) we hear from Brian King (MSW), Matty’s personal chronic illness muse we had a rangey conversation that centered on; ADHD, Mindset, how and why Brian shares his illness Publically, the dimensions of parenting with ADHD, why he is such a nice guy and the reasons he formed his own community of the empathetic on the evil platform known as The Facebook! I included an extra bit of audio leading into this chat (27:50), it’s of him and I checking in on each other. I thought it was interesting to witness reflexive empathy, the vehicle through which individuals with chronic ailments tend to connect: call this, Pragmatic Reflexivity, cuz im a dork **Side note: Brian needed to have a desk fan on during the conversation and he had some birdies in the background which was a pleasant addition. Plus side: Matty learned how to scrub audio through Audacity thanks to the helpful help of John Bukenas Podcasting Editor EXTRAORDINAIRE! He is a saint, took the time out to answer my super simple question in a very clear and helpful way. I think it sounds decent but as they say in indie podcasting: the sound might not be perfect but the content is gold! (52:50) Following Brian, we hear from Paul, really needs a better nickname than Movie Person, Combs and we talking Wellness: why and how he got back into running, how he uses technology to help track his results and keep himself motivated and I even demanded that he submit a playlist I titled: Run Paul Run: 4mi, its roughly 50mins long which based on his posts is approximately his 4mile run time. See what we did there? No word on why he is so darn photogenic though… Let’s wrap this up, hey anyone want to hear about one of the more tragic stories from anthropology that doesn’t involve the perpetuation of colonialism?? Well (1:00:15) hit that timestamp and hear the conclusion of the reflexivity chat in which Renato Rosaldo learned of the Rage that individuals feel through Loss. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links Archive of Episodes Topics and Lighthearted Complaints Watch Matty Fight on Social Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Graphics by Donna Hume ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Proud of you Lindsay
13 - Gin Soaked Spotify, iSMH w/Lisa and Sam and a Green New Deal for Rider Nation
Welcome to Episode 13 of Nooks and Crannies Gin Soaked Spotify, iSMH w/Lisa and Sam and a Green New Deal for Rider Nation This week the fella’s kick things off with an earth-shattering revelation concerning Spotify spoiler alert; we are now on Spotify. Then we talk Gin (6:00), Matt is drinking the World Class Winning Sheringham’s from beautiful Sooke BC, whilst Epen is consuming the sad, dregs of gin bottles gone by, topped off with an equally sad, still frozen cranberry. Listen to episode 14 to see how that went for Evan. Okay, so here is the real Spotify announcement; Nooks and Crannies is now making Music Playlists!!! Matty offers up the First 11 or so songs he played for Violet, plus En Vogue..cuz obviously. Whereby Evan matched Matty retroactively with his own Martini Mix, be sure to follow our playlist feed to hear playlists from Lisa and Sam, co-hosts of the I Shake My Head podcast! (11:55) Picture this; a windswept vista…populated by the funniest and most endearing podcasters in my podcatcher’s feed; Lisa and Sam from I Shake my Head Podcast with Lisa and Sam! In this segment of 3 or So Questions with…we talk about their in-car podcast, why people like them, aside from Lisa’s amazing “Tow-soooollld” hairdoo and Sam’s fabou 2019 Spring jacket lineup, or its their extremely firm Canadian accents? Nope, turns out it is all due to the diligent works of (27:10) Hyper Hype Girl (HHG) and the supporting role played by the Dirty Hippy, who it turns out does not stink, but Regina sure does! (30:00) Matty has a colonial-correction for ya’al, probably not the last time you get a correction from me…oh BTW, Matt confused Marcel Mauss with Claude Levi-Strauss on the Alison Smith Episode as well, I am sure you all picked up on this and have since sent in the hate mail. Hey Folks, wanna hear Evan explain the Green New Deal and the Intersectionality of wider socio-cultural and political dimensionality all while adhering to the morality of Marxism? Well if your answer was anything stronger than a muh, be sure to click this Time Stamp: (31:00). Matty learned a ton in this one, hope you all find the GND and AOC as inspired as these gin soaked Canucks seem to… (47:07) Speaking of Saskatchewan, wow..that turn was as hard as that right-hand turn you need to make, after driving 2.5 hrs south from Saskatoon to enter Regina…Hey, did you know that province has the most Timmies per-capita yay! (Canadian Sarcasm), Tim Horton’s is the worst coffee ever…have produced the most NHL hockey players even though Lisa and Sam could only come up with the pretty solid and well liked goon, Jody Mitchell. Then they name dropped Joni Mitchell (who is a legendary singer, songwriter and guitarist from up here) because they share a surname, we discussed canola in heavy depth, much like that not-mountain they mentioned or that former garbage dump ski hill called Black-Strap. Yes folks, hold-on to your Combine Seat…We are talking about the most awe-inspiring province, the New York of Canada, the greatest night out of your life, and home to the most passionate CFL fans; SASKATCHEWAN! w/Lisa and Sam, two fabulous women who podcast from their car! (1:06:22) Evan takes another sudden left-handed turn at the end that not even a German Dam could hold back! :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Episode 13 Links I Shake My Head with Lisa and Sam, Support their show, Buy their Stuff, Creep them on Twitter, Or see the real life Bit-Moji version of them on Insta, Their show is edited and produced by John Bukenas Sheringham’s Seaside Gin and the Award they Just Won! 7 - Bull-Dawgz, Brain Injuries and Mutton-Chops
Welcome Back to Nooks and Crannies, and thanks for hanging in there during our hiatus. This week we have a heavy episode, and I am not just talking about the Mutton-Chops! We kick matters off with a blisteringly uninteresting discussion of the weather, including Evan’s approach to wearing Long-John’s and the sculpted nature of Matty’s Legs. We invited Edward James Almos aka Matty and that lil rapscallion Lou Diamond Phillips aka Heaven, back on N&C!! This can only mean it’s the resumption of the ANTHROPOLOGY 101 series (6:16); we are talking Darwin and Huxley and after a little interlude, finishing up on Edward Tylor (19:14) who founded the discipline, as well as sent it on a racist path for like, oh I don’t know, only 50+ years, a legacy that anthropology is still trying to shake loose from to this day. Right in the middle of the racist history of anthropology, is a light-hearted discussion of Matty’s most recent noggin knock (13:10). Matty deploys an amazing segway of his own and uses this trauma as a way of shamelessly plugging the Chronicity Series-to be launched March 2019. This will be a mashup of 16 interviews with podcasters and podcast enthusiasts who spoke to me about their chronic illnesses. Be sure to hit subscribe to not miss out, and tell your friends about this one please, thanks in advance Because this was such a heavy episode, I decided to throw a Bonus Surprise Segment in at the end to lighten the mood. We are talking Eugenics and Phrenology next week…so, just wanted to leave a good taste in your mouths. Big ol thanks to Paul Csomo, co-host of the Varmints Podcast for indulging me, tune in next week to hear the rest of our diatribes! Welcome to Episode 20 of Nooks and Crannies! Overpriced Beers make Paa_uul get Political w/The 3rd Annual Livestream for the Cure Short notes this week, Matty got yet another concussion (2 in three weeks!)... We kick things off without an intro and jump right into a love-fest over the CBC’s hourly News and Current Event program: The World this Hour, then it’s a complain-fest about over-priced BC Craft beers! Which leads us to Paul’s political Left-Hand turn while discussing the feminist ramifications of Alien and Aliens (4:13) and offers up a scathing critique of the US Military Industrial Complex and how the USA treats its veterans, because you know, we were talking about Rambo. Its awesome folks, check it out. After I wipe the S*** Eater Grin off my face, Evan and Matty Dork out over the dorkiest podcast in both our podcatchers, that’s right folks its: In Our Time w/Matt’s Muse, Melvin Bragg (20:07). We hear some love that Paul has for the indelible Jackie Chan (27:23) and then we hear all about the 3rd annual Livestream for the Cure event, hosted by the amazing Epic Film Guys (33:08)! Welcome to Episode 21 of Nooks and Crannies! Apologetic Antiquing, Challenging US Military Norms and Livestream 3.0 Redux Welcome back folks and thanks for staying subscribed :) Evan tries to kick things off this week but failed miserably, instead Matty was forced to shoehorn in a discussion of oolong tea and acupuncture, which he deftly maneuvered towards an in-depth conversation about his Favorite Post-Concussion Show: Antiques Roadshow UK! (10:22) We hear from the thought-filled former Host of the sorely missed podcast: Spouse Spouts, Susan Reynolds, whose show was dedicated to advocacy and awareness around the issues faced by Military Families. This segment was taken from the start of her Chronicity interview, we were talking about the nature of her podcast and, no surprise here with Susan, she launches into a fascinating discussion about the challenges and misconceptions of the challenges faced by US Service Personnel in regards to their mental health. I have honestly never heard this “take” before but am not surprised that Susan would have made such a thoughtful connection. Please re-launch Spouse Spouts!! :) (22:00) For those of you who missed the 3rd Annual Livestream for the Cure, podcastathon to raise funds for the Cancer Research Institute https://fundraise.cancerresearch.org/fundraiser/1947095) There is still time to donate if you feel so inclined and are able. Fortifying Beeferoni, Big Pharma Eugenics, Nonplus Teens and Full Throated Endorsements
Welcome to Episode 10 of Nooks and Crannies!  Fortifying Beeferoni, Big Pharma Eugenics, Nonplus Teens and Full Throated Endorsements ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: On this very special Tenth Anniversary Spectacular, Evan and Matt spend time talking about their poke checks and underhanded hockey moves..turns out Matty is a clean goon, aside from the Mike Tee encounter, sorry about that brother. We maintain the Canadian tradition of speaking ill of the weather (8:10), followed by Matty’s approach to “Fortifying” garbage processed foods like the indelible Beeferoni, following this Matt provides a “Full Throated” endorsement of Willows Pizza, the best pie outside of Naples (9:57) Hey folks, remember when you spit in that vile for fun and shipped it to a faceless corporation? Ya turns out that corporation was bought by a big pharmaceutical firm and you are now unwilling participants in a global epidemiological study with no compensation (14:57). After that cheery chat, we start plugging the heck out of other people’s shows: Issa Wurie of Fear and Desires had Matty on to talk all about insomnia, the episode is about Issa discovering his sleep apnea and how this has affected his life, this will be a highly regarded show at some point, extremely creative and I am really proud of your Brof! We also chatted about, the soon to be our show, Play Comics Podcast, formally hosted by the kindest most giving and generous podcaster around Chris Osborne (21:33), he recently had N&C own Paul Combs and P. Cosmo from Varmints on so be sure to give those a listen. Tell Chris; Nooks and Crannies are coming! (23:54) So Matty was recently listening to conservative AM talk radio in Victoria and there was this ad for this website. Honestly, no spoilers on this one but do plan on marking your calendar for Nooks and Crannies very own FB Live Stream Event!! Matt, the hottest guest in podcasting, Sanderson basically just gloats for like 5 mins about all the amazing shows that want to have him on (31:10) including; Pop Up Film Cast, Unapologetically Me: a Mental Health Podcast, and Submitted For your Approval: A Twilight Zone Podcast. (35:33) Evan fires off a recommendation of his own for the podcast Michael and Us, a Canadian podcast that revisits Michael Moore movies and others with a harshly lefty critique that enjoys slamming so-called ‘progressive liberalism’. Of course Evan loves these guys. We end the show with one more recommendation and some words of thanks for the compelling general conversation podcast Mouse and Weens, thanks Jo for the early support and kind words (37:19) Podcasts Mentioned Fears and Desires: by our brof and yours, Issa Wurie Play Comics Podcast: Our new podcast project we just gotta let Chris know first… Pop Up Film Cast: A comedic parody pod that offers hilariously fake movie reviews Unapologetically Me: A Mental Health Podcast, by Boomer Perrault aka best name in podcasts Submitted For your Approval: A Twilight Zone Podcast, its about the Twilight Zone… Michael and Us, a lefty retrospective movie review podcast, Evan also aged me horribly here.. Mini: Socialism, What is to be Done?
Welcome to Nooks and Crannies! Minisode2: Socialism, What is to be Done? :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: What started as a simple question: What is socialism to both of us, what does it look like, developed into an interesting little primer on Socialism, highlighting the works of some pre-Marxist thinkers. Evan suggests that socialism can be defined as Worker’s; owning the Means of their own Production (both their productive capacities and profits). From this simple assertion we speak about some of the differences between Communism and Socialism before getting into some early theorists like: Pierre-Joseph Proudhon  Robert Owen  Henri de Saint-Simon and Charles Fourier As Matty’s favorite European Feminist Socialist Philosophers, En Vogue, would say: Free Your Mind, the Rest Will Follow! 28-Halloween Spectacular: Self Immolating Sens Fans, Floppy Disked ICQ chatting, Making Bread with Cod Baskets.
Welcome to Episode 28 of Nooks and Crannies! Halloween Spectacular: Self Immolating Sens Fans, Floppy Disked ICQ chatting, Making Bread with Cod Baskets.   :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: (4:37) Evan immediately breaks his promise of a “no rant” episode by absolutely loosing it on Ottawa Senator’s owner Eugene Melnyk. Folks this is the best rant in Nooks and Crannies history! In solidarity with my valiant co host, here are just a few stories that support his vitriol; Gambling Debts, apparently he is trying to get his private jet back (sad really), how he literally guilt tripped a diehard Sens fan into giving him a chunk of their liver! and of course, rumors continue to swirl about him selling the team but he won’t because he is likes this shit. Oh, and we also talk about the Canucks, who are going to be okay going forward, Poor Evan.    (18:13) Hold onto your Cod Basket’s folks, cuz its time for another Canadian Heritage Moment! This week we are discussing the fake-Italian not quite British ‘explorer’ John, don’t you dare call me Giovanni, Cabot, and the “discovery” of cod off the coast of Newfoundland! Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up yum! (22:25) Get your floppy disks out folks, we are taking the time machine back to like I dunno, lets say 1989…Its another addition of “Dimming 90’s Memories with Mamoo”. Matty explains to Evan what the eff DOS is, how to download shareware games from a Surrey Library database, stealing AOL CD’s, and the glorious world of ICQ *Uh..uooo! (Side Note: First Google suggestion on ICQ was “Is ICQ still a thing?” Apparently it is!! Then Evan turns the tables, talking about the quite frightening sounding Omegle… :( According to their still existing website, they see things a little differently: The Internet is full of cool people; Omegle lets you meet them. When you use Omegle, we pick someone else at random so you can have a one-on-one chat. (35:50) Then for no reason whatsoever, Matty decided to explain to Epen how to make bread from hand (by hand?). Two notes that I forgot to mention, for egg wash; add a small splash of water and whip that up a bit with a fork, secondly; when baking with milk add no more than half what the recipe calls for, for liquid (this recipe calls for 2 cups of water, sub 1 of those for milk), and you will want to microwave that milk first (like 20-30 seconds). Enjoy! Even though your first loaf will suck… (44:55) And to wrap things up, the fella’s felt obliged to talk about their least favorite holiday, Halloween *We also hate Thanksgiving, which happens in October in Canada, not really sure why…Anyway, we keep it rather non-ranty, we talk about our favorite childhood costumes, trick or treat strategies (including Matty’s full sized chocolate bar recon schemes), teenage hijinx *including Matty’s near nard loss due to a hammered down screetch-a-roo, and why we both hate adult Halloween, but also why we need to get Evan back into that cape and bejeweled crown! ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Episode 28 Links: Fun Eugene Melnyk Story’s: https://www.macleans.ca/society/health/did-eugene-melnyk-jump-the-queue-for-a-new-liver/ https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-senators-owner-eugene-takes-legal-action-to-get-private-jet-back-1.5287642 https://thehockeywriters.com/ottawa-senators-ownership-problem-an-nhl-problem/ https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/casino-cash-chips-melnyk-1.5304618 James Beard bread book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/545911.Beard_on_Bread Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything: http://www.howtocookeverything.com/ John Cabot, Canadian Heritage Minute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ds8G9sFOK5w  :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links All The Episodes Drop us a line: Nooksandcranniespod@gmail.com Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/nooksandcranniespodcast Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures: https://www.instagram.com/nooks_and_crannies_pod/ Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Graphics by Donna Hume ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Theme Music Attribution: Cullah - "Neurosis of the Liver" on "Cullah The Wild" https://www.cullah.com/discography/cullah-the-wild/neurosis-of-the-liver  Under license (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

15 - Misogynistic Gardening and Unicorn Riots at Floyd’s Diner
Welcome to Episode 15 of Nooks and Crannies! Misogynistic Gardening and Unicorn Riots at Floyd’s Diner Surprise! Matty unilaterally moved Nooks and Crannies’ release day to Friday’s, sometimes Thursday’s. Tis a new day in paradise… Anywhooozy Doozy, This week on N&C we kick things off by digging around in Matty’s gardening adventures while Evan is mired in melting snow and sedimented dog poop. Although he did get a fun new office plant that is, honestly, it just sounds terrifying (4:51).  Take a hard lefthanded turn (7:00) Matty lets Epen in on a little organization called Unicorn Riot that he heard about after hearing them featured on a recent On the Media episode called Hating in Plain Sight. Evan then misogynistically takes over the mic (13:21) to recommend Venus in Furs! A book published in 1870 which seems to have introduced the world to the magical world of Sadomasochism! So, folks, this is not as raunchy as it might seem at first glance, it is actually quite tame and in Evan’s humble opinion, kinda badly written and contains weak immature philosophy written by rich folks who do not need to live in the real world with all us stiffs who clearly do not have time for this kind of juvenility. However, obviously, I guess, books like this influenced Freud and friends in their establishment of personality typologies. Solid Evan reads in this one, hope you also agree. If not, Evan might spank me :( To allow the fellas a chance to collect themselves after that sensual Evan Reads, we play a couple banked mini-segments on future topics we are interested in; Eugenics in Iceland (28:33) and (32:18) Matt assigns Epen some homework, he gets to go deep dive Shoshana Zuboff who has written extensively on Surveillance Capitalism. Epen and Mamoo would like Kristaps, host of the amazing Eastern Border Podcast to read a recent David Brooks article called If Stalin had a Smartphone, report back with your findings comrade! *Sorry for the sound quality in these two segments, Matty fixed it. To close things out, Matty talks about the Amazing Floyd’s Diner in Victoria BC as a way of shamelessly sharing the one and only podcast-celebrity moment he will ever have (35:36).    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links Archive of Episodes Topics and Lighthearted Complaints Watch Matty Fight on Social Ponder Matty’s Garden Wedge Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Graphics by Donna Hume ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Proud of you Lindsay
6 - The Kinship of Neuro Anti-Inflammation
Welcome to Nooks and Crannies! Episode 6: The Kinship of Neuro Anti-Inflammation This week the Evan and Matt kick things off by talking about a Spit Take Matty made a few months back after winning a trip for two to Vegas. The intro was recorded before he left, now he is back and Matty feels like he has been poisoned, so … good trip! J Matty (aka: Edward James Almos) informs Evan (aka; 1987 era Lou Diamond Phillips) that he has class which can only mean that it is the inception of ANTHRO 101 (6:41)!! Just one segment, to get your feet wet, we cover: “what the heck is anthropology?” (8:20) and “how in goodness gracious’ name does one do it??” (11:30) and a little bit on the wider philosophical debates (18:10). After this tantalizing anthropological discussion, we hear the second and last half of the interview that Matt did with Amy Longard, an Ottawa-based whole-food specializing nutritionist; all about concussion nutrition (22:00), anti-inflammation strategies that are not just a fad (25:30) and some of her views how to incorporate nutrition into our own overall wellness strategies (37:45). I wanted to end the chat with some specifics about Women’s health and nutrition, which like all topics of our conversation dovetailed into an interesting side talk on the Care-Taker role and women’s socially ascribed gender roles (40:35). Had a fascinating time talking with Amy, be sure to follow her on social, visit her website and sign-up for her newsletter for all sorts of interesting information and recipes *it’s free eh! Next week: We hear all about Phrenology and Eugenics-Darwinian Anthropology from the late 1800’s-plus a full run down on Matty’s Vegas-inspired debauchery and maybe a Great Chocolate Bar Debate with Paul Cosmo Csomo, co-host of the much more successful Varmints Podcast Talk to Y’ALL Soon :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Our Links: Archive of Episodes Tell Evan to re-admin his Pony-Tail: nooksandcranniespod@gmail.com See Matt Back-peddle his Comments on  FB Watch Evan’s Sillyness on Insta: @nooks_and_crannies_pod Graphics by Donna Hume
4 - Salad Bars and Side Saddles
Welcome to Nooks and Crannies, Episode 4! :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: This week we had a bit of a delay due to extenuating circumstances, but there is no stopping Nooks and Crannies! This week we hear the remainder of Pau_uuls Podcast; Westerns, be sure to take a look at the show notes to see the links that Capt. Concussion forgot to include in the last episode. Paul and Matt kick things off talking about The Wild Bunch (2:10) and its famous Bridge Scene, then advance theories as to why the Western died in the 80’s (4:35) including the Star Wars Factor (7:45) and the hottest of Hot Takes by Pauley (15:37). Mamoo decided that now was the time to deep dive on Lonesome Dove (17:03). Paul fills us in on the Waterworld of Westerns (22:09) and wrap up this section with some talk on Unforgiven (23:15). Amy Longard is an Ottawa based nutritionist that Matt met at a chronic pain gathering in Strathcona Park in the summer (24:28). Amy described how her own healthy lifestyle in some ways was the cause of her chronic illnesses and how this eventually led to chef’s training and a new career in nutritional care (30:10). Mattie proposes a theory (35:03) about the immediacy of nutritional efficacy and Amy bridges off this describe her own approach in helping others (39:55). Part 2 of this interview will play next week, stay tuned and in the meantime follow Amy on Instagram, sign up for her newsletter and read her blog. Last but not least, its Pau_uuls podcast again! We wrap things up continuing to debate the causality of Westerns decline in the ’80s (45:45), it got pretty heated, almost had to Kick Paul off the show just like I did to Evan. Anywhoozy, We kept talking about Unforgiven (49:12), including yet another incisive point by Paul about Toxic Masculinity (54:30). We do a mini deep dive on Tombstone (57:16) then a brief chat about post-2000’s Westerns (1:01:01) and finish up on Blazing Saddles (1:10:45) LINKS: The Website Matt about early silent era Westerns with all African American casts. Bonus 1 - Pau_uuls Podcast: Westerns
Welcome to Nooks and Crannies! On this surprise bonus episode, Matt is joined by friend and fellow podcaster Paul Combs who foolishly agreed to undertake a 1.5 hr deep dive on the Cinematic Genre of Westerns. In this hunk we start with a discussion of The Great Train Robbery (1903) and all its innovative innovations. Included in the Silent Film era section is some information Matt pulled up about African American actors who played roles in films of this era (13:00) and a revelatory revelation about Bill Picket, the Bull Dodger! We blasted through the 30-40’s but covered Stagecoach (1939) quite a bit as it is one of Paul’s personal favorites (17:55), we then delve into the golden-era (1950-60’s) and suggest ways the political-social-cultural context in shaped and drove the popularity of the genre (21:02) and conclude this hunk by absolutely nerding out really hard on Spaghetti Westerns (29:51) YEE HAW, Y’all! 12 - Alison Smith; Empathetic Polymathematical Parenting
Welcome to Episode 12 of Nooks and Crannies! Alison Smith; Empathetic-Polymathematical Parenting   So one day, Matt met Alison on Facebook; next thing they know they are recording a 1hr+ long podcast all about parenting. I will try my best to sum up this fascinatingly rangy conversation… Alison Smith is a Canadian parenting coach who got her start in Elementary education after completing degrees in psychology and education. When pregnant with her first child she embarked on an ongoing journey of discovery and self-education about parenting in a “different” way. After searching in vain for a guru who encapsulated her own approach and doing buckets of research she decided to host a workshop as a way of passing on what she learned to her new network of parents that she had developed. One of the many jump out points for me is Alison’s commitment to running these findings past people who have parented longer than herself as a way of confirming or dispelling her findings.   Since then, Alison has developed her own “gentle parenting” model based upon three pillars: “Connection” “Empathy” *Matty’s Super Nerdy Anthro Topic, don’t worry, I held back, somewhat… and “Teaching Life Skills” in addition to a substantial weight placed upon Respect, Understanding, Collaboration, and Reciprocity. This totally flies in the face of conventional wisdom (psychological and pedagogical); among other topics, we discuss how this impacts parenting, schooling, children’s mental and social health as well as some of the wider politics involved in the education system: STEM v the Creative Arts, Critical v Linear Thought and the value of Emotional Intellegence. Okay, so this is about the midway point, and I have not even scratched the surface yet… Additional Topics Covered: spanking and discipline/punishment (yes, I talked Foucault!), how much screen time is too much, fatigue and self-care, parenting relationships, tips for single parents, how to find sneaky child care, the value of getting a children’s climbing wall and that Ol’ Capt Concussion should avoid the adult-sized versions, communication and emotional care, being an entrepreneur, the parent-child relationships and value of valuing children for their perspectives and personalities-believe it or not, sadly, that’s rather revolutionary… To say I learned a few things would be the greatest understatement in Nooks and Crannies’ history! What a wealth of information Alison Smith is and you know what is even better??? She is one of those wonderful people who see the value of passing knowledge on and has the confidence to admit that she does not know “Everything there is to know about Parenting”…for the sake of all of Humanity, Alison-Polymathematical parenting empathy coach-Smith, keep up the Great Works! Maybe someone should fashion some sorta Manifesto out of all this, hey wait a tick, is that a hand-written scroll? Oh, it's from Alison, her gift to all of ya’all :) Special non-monetary thank you goes out once again to Nooks and Crannies very own, very much appreciated, researcher-extraordinaire, Juhli. She has been involved with the NGO CanUgan for years and serves on the board as well as throwing Ottawa-based events, a super worthy cause if you are looking to chuck some loonies around. Thanks in advance for supporting this amazing organization. Oh, why not, March is TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) Awareness Month. Your valiant co-host (Matt) suffers from this inexplicable condition and if you do have a few toonies left over, I would love if I saw them go to the Brain Injury Association of the Ottawa Valley. They are a resource center that also holds peer-support and caregiver support events, and sadly, this was the only such place available to Melly and I when we lived there. Thanks in advance, I seriously appreciate the heck out of them. Talk to ya‘all soon; after a nap but not before staring blankly at that wall for a quick second, and that I have learned is A-OK! 22 - Bond and Brexit w/Post-9/11 Cinematic Commentary
Welcome to Episode 22 of Nooks and Crannies! Bond and Brexit w/Post-9/11 Cinematic Commentary No intro this week, instead Evan and Matt decided to breakdown and tear apart James Bond movies for their misogynistic racism and overall campy vibes. (10:31) Yes folks, Paul and Mamoo managed to wrap things up on our marathon Action Flick break down recording. Here we chat about Jurassic Park and of course matt has to show horn in Three Ninjas a Dub Pee exclusive must rewatch! (16:02) After this, Paul gives us some interesting thoughts and provides some compelling connections around the Post-9/11 era and its effects on Film and Culture, politics and society. Fascinating work Pauly, considering we were 2hrs deep at this point!! (27:56) No one asked for it, except Mammo, so here it is…The Brexit analysis segment!! Evan explains all the dynamics, including needing to re-write their trade deals and general effects on the economy of Britain and the EU, why the Right has sold out to xenophobic isolationists, the Irish border (never heard this point made before, smart boy Evan is eh?), what effect if any this has on revitalizing the Left and the fellers finish up making some broader international connections. This is Evan’s best segment so far in Matt’s books…really good job buddy! (45:53) And, Paul is back…we finish up for reals on Sin City and Ong Bak which is Paul’s favorite type of movie, so we take a lil detour into Chinese martial arts films including the Final Fight scene of the Raid Redemption. We also answer the age-old action movie question; what happens when you send two goons in at once instead of one at a time?!?! Apparently, Tony Jaa will whoop you’re A$$! Paul uses Commando as the quintessential action flick, we also name drop: Beverly Hills Cop as action-comedy, Rambo 3 to see Rambo in Afghanistan and the Last Action Hero as a perfect parody action movie. We then get into the real early history (8:15) including the Lumiere bros. classic “proof of concept” film from 1895 Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat technically this is the first “Action” film. (12:10) Buster Keaton (IMDB) gets a well deserved focus in this early history (1920’s), be sure to watch The General (1926) in Paul’s opinion it is his finest work or The Frozen North (1922) cuz its Buster in Canada! I also found this amazing interview he gave in the early 70’s overdubbed on a compilation of his greatest stunts. Paul reminded us all about Harold Lloyd who Matty treated like the lesser Keaton (14:35), but I did remember to bring up the famous hanging from a clock stunt from Safety Last! (1923). To cap the 20-30’s off, Matty gushes over Errol Flynn and the impact The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) had on young Mamoo when he was a wee lad (20:11), but not this one from the 20’s that is really quite awful. After an awkward edit break where I was planning on playing a movie trailer but thought better of it…We chat about Paul’s favorite role model James Bond and who he considers the personification of his own personality Sean Connery (28:20). The 1950-60’s was dominated by Westerns and military films when it came to “Action” films, the 1970’s was kinda depressing and Sci-fi then took over the action genre for the latter half of the decade. It was not until the 1980’s that the genre itself became fully fledged. So in this last segment (33:00), Paul and I try to name as many movies as possible, including for some reason T1 and T2? The OG Mad Max, The French Connection (35:26) Paul has a doozy of a tidbit on this film, Dirty Harry, Bullet surprised to learn that this is one of Paul’s favorites and he smartly explained why the late 60-70’s saw a boom in car-centric action movies, Death Race 2000 (1975) the amazing early Sylvester Stallone film, Dirty Dozen and The Wild Bunch, Independence Day and Saving Private Ryan dunno why here but there you go. Oh right, Matt tries to explain why there is no such thing as a Canadian Action movie but does throw Last of the Mohican out there as a pitiful example (46:00). Then we finally cap this half!?! That’s right folks, this is only the first half of the Marathon. But we end with one of the most controversial reveals in Nooks and Crannies HISTORY, Paul almost gets booted..it got real ugly (47:26).  :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: N&C Links Archive of Episodes Topics and Lighthearted Complaints Watch Matty Fight on Social Ponder Evan’s Blurry Pictures Find Nooks and Crannies on Spotify Listen to Evan’s Much Superior Musical Picks Graphics by Donna Hume ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Proud of you Lindsay
