I started off with the Coming of Age episode as they review two books I've read and have completely opposite feelings for. Pierce talks about Catcher in the Rye, this is a book I read as a child and absolutely coule not stand. Pierce sums the book up nicely with "nothing happens". Growing up I could not put words to why I disliked the books protagonist Holden, but as an adult I can tell you it's because of his privilege that he refuses to acknowledge. But maybe that acknowlegement would cause the character to grow up too quickly. (A theme they talk about in the episode.) The reviewer seems to have a different opinion and has swayed me to give it another try.Gavin reviews Ender's Game. Now let me tell you, this book is one I have many feelings about. First I'd like to point out that Justin(I believe) was right. Buggers was intended as a slur, the scientific name given for the aliens is "formics". I read it when I was a bit older, but it (and the rest of the series) taught me that blind faith in authority is a dangerous thing. Respect and deference should be earned and never given when commanded. These ideas have shaped my life. Here's where it gets tricky, and I think they did it very well. While they talked about Catcher in the Rye they spoke about how JD Salinger believes art should be removed from the artist. And Orson Scott Card is definitely one of those artists. They talk about his racism, but he was also incredibly homophobic. Nothing he has said on either of the subjects should be defended. With someone like Card it's easy to read a book and forget about the author. He's a no one. It gets a bit more difficult with someone like JKR who is so tied to their work. But that's a talk for later. And while I'd never read Anne of Green Gables Justin has talked me into giving it a try.Overall this podcast was different than what I suspected. I thought it would've been more of a discussion. But instead it's a fantastic podcast with spoiler free reviews! Well done! I think I'll dive into the Russian Literature episode next!
What a weird idea...a book club where the participants actually read the book??!! Most I've seen or heard of just use it as an excuse to drink and gossip. But honestly you're doing great. And I live the insight into the books. It's nice to hear another view point, regardless if I agree or not. I'm subscribed! Keep it up!
