From learning that men and women come from the same planet and how understanding each other’s love languages can grow a relationship, in today’s continuation on the journey of love Mary Ellen dives into the importance of communication. In communication, there are key components to look at other than what comes out of our mouth and what we hear through our ears, such as what we say nonverbally through our facial expressions. As our facial muscles send messages to our brains when an emotion is being expressed, we normally show these expressions first nonverbally than verbally. Along with other key components of communication, the 3 best tips on communication are 1. Don’t assume what others are thinking, 2. Try to not lead off with “you” when expressing feelings, and 3. State your needs. Hear more about the science behind our emotions and some personal stories of Mary Ellen going through the ups and downs of discovering how to communicate not only as a therapist but as an Okay-ish person. Like what you hear?  Leave a review and give us a follow on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, or any of your other favorite platforms!Related episodes Episode 47 -Love: Are We Doing it Right?: Maryellen shares the 2 major types of love along with 2 major predictors of who we will fall in love with, and to top it off enlightens us with how we can build our relationships based off the 5 love languages. Episode 42 - Toxic Positivity: Maryellen shares what toxic positivity is and how it’ll not only damage our emotions but can be seen as a new form of gaslighting, and gives us 5 tips on how to handle toxic positivity in person and social media. Episode 45 - How Attachment Styles Affects Your Relationships : In this episode, Mary Ellen shows us the 3 types of attachment styles: anxious, secure, and avoidant, and how they grow on us as kids through adulthood. Episode 46 - Women’s Brains VS Men’s Brains: Chemistry or Socialization?:  Maryellen gives us the 4 myths of the differences between men and women ranging from sex talk to opposites attract, and the use of our brains.
