RATING
I enjoy fiction podcasts using the investigative reporter format, and Olive Hill is top notch. It's a very engaging story and has excellent voice actors. It belongs on anyone's "must listen" list who enjoys this format. Thanks for a great experience!
I went into this expecting a horror podcast. Instead, I got a touching story about love, and loss, and devotion. It’s slow—very slow. And nothing is really cleared up for sure (at least, not for the narrator). But it was beautiful, and I’ll be thinking about it for a long time. Also, the audio quality is lovely, and the narrator’s voice is soothing.
Knock your socks off spooky. Impeccable voice acting, the story just grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go, even after the last episode! It still haunts me!
This podcast tugged at my heartstrings - really good story telling.
A beautifully told mystery with an unexpected answer.
Journalist investigations into supernatural-tinged crimes in small towns are a dime a dozen in audio drama-dom. This one stands out for having a relatively empathetic viewpoint of small town life. It's not romanticized nor disdainful and is well integrated with the genre elements. In confronting the banality of evil, it never stoops to lazy stereotypes.
Really great story and script, most of the voice actors were great, but the main narrator is so hard to listen to- the whole time she sounds apathetic, uninterested, bored, annoyed, monotone, I can describe it even as a sarcastic tone, and it's consistent through every episode
Olive Hill is the most authentic fictional take on the true crime genre I've heard. Everything from the narration to the pacing and editing has you believing this is a real documentary. The interviews are enlightening and we gradually learn more about the mystery and the characters involved.I wasn't enthralled with the more paranormal aspects as the plot developed but overall I would recommend Olive Hill.
Very bad ending so disappointed.
You get involved at once in this strange story of dissapearances, ghosts, lore and a small community with big secrets.
I hate to say that I listened to it but don't remember a single thing about it.
Took me a while to get into this but the story was intricate and all of the details came together to form a very good story. I’d suggest sitting down, taking your time and really listening as the ending was incredibly interesting and it all tied together.
"The criminal is the creative artist; the detective only the critic," GK ChestertonWriting: A- Acting: A Production Quality: A Sound Quality: A Olive Hill is about a journalist who returns home because her mother has died. Once back, she has so many thoughts and feelings that to ground herself; she decides to investigate a cold case: the disappearance of two girls on the same night \~10 years ago. This trope is familiar to many of us who lurk in this Reddit, but the Olive Hill creative team have executed their version of the trope great skill and care. In developing this podcast, they made several wise decisions. First, they kept the story to 8 episodes. This choice allowed them to sustain the suspense so the audience knew they would not be disappointed when they got to the next episode. Second, the selection of voice actors. Each one knew how to use their voice to help the audience to understand and empathize with each of the characters in the story. Last but not least, they located the story in a non-fictional small town in Kentucky that they knew well enough that even the town plays a role in the story. So why did I give the writing an A- if I thought it was so wonderful? Once you have been through the entire story, you will understand. It's like eating an excellent sumptuous meal, but in the end, you hunger for a bit more.Disclaimer: Those who can, do; those who can't, teach; those who can't teach, criticize. I am in the third category, and I am biased. I am the perfect audience for this podcast, old enough to know what the character is going through but not too old that I have forgotten what it's like to be in that position. Please burst my bubble if you disagree with my opinion. I could use a reality check.
This appears on some True Crime lists. Be advised that it is an audio drama, a good one, but still fiction.
This is a rolling, lyrical, haunting story that carries you along for a satisfying, but mostly gentle, ride. Production value is high, writing is tight, voice acting is first rate.
