In this episode, John Federico (twitter: @gadgetboy), Chia-Lin Simmons (twitter: @zeropts), Ken Gellman (twitter: @kengellman) and Craig Calder (twitter:@ccalder) discuss their predictions for 2009. Topics include:

  • Craig is going to the PhocusWright Conference November 17th through the 19th
  • Ken is now living in the Boston area and looking for a new gig
  • WSJ is going to start charging for mobile access to subscription content. There will be discounts for current subscribers.
  • Do the math: based on current pricing, the WSJ iPhone app is just as valuable as the print subscription. Is this the beginning of the age of a Platform-agnostic news organization
  • “The newspaper industry has been in decline for 50 years. They just didn’t know it.”
  • 24% of newspapers are ignoring the digital channel for distributing content
  • Business Week had 93 suitors at one point - only half are still interested in purchasing the publication.
  • “The brand means nothing if the business is dying.”
  • The Kindle version of Dan Brown’s new book “The Lost Symbol” is outselling the hardcover on Amazon
  • “Every president in American history has been a Mason except for one: John F. Kennedy.”
  • “The Book is dead. Long live the Book.”
  • “The printed book is not dead. The book publishing business as we know it is dead.” (or dying)
  • Google bough ReCaptcha as a tool for helping digitize books
  • Google will make many of the books that it has scanned as part of its Google Books initiative via print-on-demand
  • Smashing Pumpkins will be distributing their new album in its entirety for free. If you want, you can buy one of the 11 collectors editions. That works for major acts, but what about the thousands of other musicians and performers?
  • Check out JamsBio.com
  • “The artists took over merch, ClearChannel and others took over the venues. All that’s left are the CD’s and lawsuits.”
  • ASCAP and BMI want royalties for the 30-second samples on iTunes and other downloadable musi retailers.
  • The music industry wants to get paid for that extra one second beyond the 29-second fair use doctrine.
